View Full Version : Spartans land 4 Star Hoover!
Baker 06-23-2007, 12:27 AM Michigan State picked up a huge commitment earlier today when 4-star defensive end prospect Tyler Hoover of Novi High School informed the Spartan staff he will be playing for the Green and White next year. SpartanMag.com has the details about Hoover's commitment.
Hoover was one of the top performers at the Palo Alto NIKE Camp last month
We spoke with Hoover this evening and the 6-foot-7, 255-pound prospect confirmed to us that he had committed to Head Coach Mark Dantonio and the Michigan State Spartans.
The Spartans held a one-day camp today and Hoover was able to workout with the Michigan State coaches and develop an even better rapport with them.
After the camp was over, Hoover and his family were able to speak with Coach Dantonio and Coach Narduzzi and that is when Hoover informed the staff of his decision.
"I told Coach Dantonio that I wanted to come to State," Hoover said. "He was really excited. He called the whole staff and they all congratulated me and my family."
What was it about Michigan State that prompted Hoover to select the Spartans over 20 other scholarship offers including fellow Big Ten teams like Michigan, Wisconsin, Purdue and Minnesota?
"It was just the quality and character of the staff at Michigan State. They are doing things right and are looking to recruit players with character to help them win. I believe they are going to recruit some great players to Michigan State. I think it's a good time to be a Spartan," Hoover said.
Hoover is rated a 4-star prospect by Rivals.com. He is ranked the #6 player in Michigan for the class of 2008 and a Rivals top 250 prospect.
How impressive is Coach Dantonio's recruitment of Hoover? In four years at the helm at Michigan State Coach John L. Smith was unable to beat the Wolverines for any in-state players. Coach Dantonio has won an important recruiting battle in his first year on the job. If he wins a few more key recruiting battles then Hoover's assesment that it is "good time to be a Spartan" could be very prophetic.
SpartanMag.com will have much more on Hoover in the near future.
Baker 06-23-2007, 12:31 AM Huge pickup for 3 reasons:
1) The dude is huge so it has to be a "huge" pickup. 6'7" 255
2) Dantonio beat out Michigan for him. He had offers from Michigan, Wisconsin, and Miami.
3) He's a DE and MSU needs to start stacking their defense for Dantonio.
I'm absolutely thrilled.
bball11 06-23-2007, 08:39 AM I find it really funny that a 4 star recruit gets his own thread when Michigan hauls in tons of 4's and 5's. None of the Michigan recruits got their own thread, but this is very significant for State because like Tre said Hoover is a good DL that Dantonio can mold and he could get the ball rolling. Things do seem to be heating up more with all the camps. Now we need to get Nick Perry to go on the other side of the line. Someone on MLive said he might be positioned at a OT or TE also but he's probably a retard.
Jethro34 06-23-2007, 09:16 AM There will be some big UM recruits that get their own thread. Tre and I were just talking about it the other night. McGuffie, Gray and Fred Smith will possibly all get their own threads regardless if they go to UM, MSU, or someone else.
This is impressive for State. To be honest, I thought they had no chance. Guess I was wrong. Nice work for MD. Congrats Sparties.

The Spartans getting Hoover over the schools that were competing for him is bigger than your average 4 stars that chose Michigan just because of the surprise factor and that it's the underdog getting somebody. The Hoover commitment is a surprise, when Michigan gets 57 4 star recruits, it's no surprise. However, we've discussed this before. 4 and 5 star recruits are worthy of their own thread. We all follow recruiting like crazy and it is exciting when you get a good one. I have no problem with threads for every single 4 star Michigan commitment. It's not like our forum is overflowing with threads.
BTW, one of the pics of Hoover out there is him wearing a Michigan hat at the Michigan game last year. Pretty crazy.
bball11 06-23-2007, 01:51 PM True, True, I figured you made the thread because he would be an impact recruit that can get things going. I just thought it was funny the way that there wasn't a thread for Cissoko, Martin, etc. but they do deserve it.

It's that way in bball at times too. We might get a 4 star and not have a new thread for it if Doc Tre doesn't go off with one, because for us 4 stars are the norm. However, Manny commits and they are gonna be hyped and start one. I'd welcome threads for cissoko, etc.
Artermis 06-23-2007, 05:09 PM I am not trashing Hoover, as I know nothing about him or his ability.
All I know is that he was not high on UMs list for DE with Perry, Johnson, Foster and Progar.
Again not trashing a kid, just stating where Hoover was on Michigan's list of wanting him as a DE.
Now if MSU gets Perry that would be much bigger for MSU than Hoover is in terms of who UM wants and does not land to MSU.

UM offered Hoover a scholarship, so they must of been fairly high on him.

Exactly. Michigan doesn't throw around scholarships for kids that they don't want that much. Curious as to how a fan knows who a coach wants the most, generally coaches aren't going to say that in the media.
Regardless, can't wait to see future qbs trying to throw to the left side of the field against MSU. Think he'll get his hands on some passes? 6'7 1/2"

You know the score, Tre. Its just UM`s apology wonks out there saying, "Oh, we never wanted him anyway."
There is a lesson in this, as fans of MSU, let us never go down that road with the basketball team. UM fans are known far and wide for being dicks. Lets let them retain that crown.
Jethro34 06-23-2007, 09:20 PM Hey fucknut. Can you read? Michigan wanted this kid. They offered and that means of course they wanted him. They liked him and would have loved a commit.
That being said, it's not like all their eggs were in his basket. He would have been a great addition and we missed out. Now we're moving on to the other DE's on our board and concentrating there. The school had apparently been showing them a little more love lately, but they still courted Hoover. Did you see anyone saying otherwise? No. You think typical UM is discounting a kid when UM doesn't get him. Well, I think typicla bukdow is making shit up so you can ruffle your own panties. Why not just go bitch slap the mirror and have a one person catfight. You can pretend Tre is pumping you while you're doing it if it helps you burn calories.
In the meantime, read my first post that had nothing the fuck to do with anything but congratulating you on a victory, bitch.
detroitsportscity 06-23-2007, 10:14 PM UM offered him as a TE, not DE.
Artermis 06-23-2007, 10:42 PM I never said Michigan didnt wanted him. I just said that he was not way up on the list for them on DE. I never really paid him much attention even though he had an offer. There are lots of recruits out there that teams offer UM included that I never really pay attention to. It was a good get for MSU, but I feel good about landing Ethan Johnson who word is, is going to be special.
I will state right now if MSU gets Gray, not too worried as long as we get McGuffie, but if UM does not get Perry or Smith and MSU does, then that will be well played by MSU. Because UM wants both and I want both.

He wasn't high on your DE list because you offered him as a TE who might become a OT if he bulked up. He was your number 2 TE after your committed one.
McGuffie would be a sick pickup for UM depending on who you pick to coach after Carr. I say that because I think he'd be best used in a Reggie Bush style rather than the traditional UM pound it style. Though Chris Perry was used as a pass threat a lot.

Manny was Mr. Basketball. Hoover is BORDERLINE top 5 in the state.

Hell, it doesnt matter the way Navarre and Henne through you could be 5'6" and knock down their passes.
However, when Mallet gets back in the pocket.....
Artermis 06-24-2007, 08:49 AM Actually Koger is our #2 TE or #2 DE prospect.
FillyCheezeSteak 06-24-2007, 09:09 AM I know this will sound like a HUGE cheapshot and I don't really want it to, because its just more of a personal preference thing.............BUT when I look at Tyler Hoover I can picture only one thing and it is something TERRIBLE.........
PAT "WORST DEFENSIVE LINEMAN EVER" MASSEY
P.S. I have heard one three different boards that Fred Smith will be committing to State very soon. I'm thinking this is one of those "where there is smoke, there is fire things."
Artermis 06-24-2007, 11:48 AM Yeah there is lots of stuff floating about that Smith is going to MSU and while I thought there was a chance of him going to UM...I figured once Burrell commited to MSU it would lead them to Smith.
Only thing UM has going for them is who would you rather having throwing the ball to you Mallett or a scrub..:)
JickBoy34 06-24-2007, 12:01 PM Pat Massey?
detroitsportscity 06-24-2007, 12:12 PM What about Mario Willaims, or Julius Peppers, or Michael Strahan rather than Pat Massey - 6'7, 6'7, 6'5.
Being tall is a good thing for a DE, so what if some suck.
detroitsportscity 06-24-2007, 12:16 PM Manny was Mr. Basketball. Hoover is BORDERLINE top 5 in the state.
There are WAY more people on a FB team than BB; Rivals250 FB = big deal; Rivals250 BBall - who cares?
Baker 06-24-2007, 01:02 PM Manny was Mr. Basketball. Hoover is BORDERLINE top 5 in the state.
Your point? I said I had no prob with 4 star individual threads. Manny was a 4 star. Not sure the point you are making. You think I shouldn't have started a Hoover thread? Well, sorry but we've all discussed this before and we said 4 and 5's deserve their own threads. Don't like it, don't read it.

No, I'd much rather have a 6'1" DE commit with much less upside and body to work with.

lmao....damn tre. Nice implosion. I was just pointing out that you compared it to Michigan BBall...
...getting the best player in the state compared to a fringe top 5 is totally different.
...I never ONCE even HINTED that I didnt like it... Do me a favor and CALM THE HELL DOWN before you assume I am hating on you or your posts homie.
I did enjoy the laughter I got from DSC and your defensive response. Classic!
"FEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLSSSSSSSS IT!!!!"

You talking to me?
Baker 06-24-2007, 07:16 PM Where is the implosion? I simply asked what your point was and guessed that it was having a prob with the thread and I responded. While you claim that I was imploding, you used all caps several times and swore in your post. I'm guessing that would be more of an implosion?
Boy, I sure missed Muhme.

awwwwww
tommyz 06-27-2007, 01:31 PM This is a nice pick up by state. I really hope he stays at TE. I believe he can be dominate at that position.. Im not sure how well he will do if they move him to DE..
Baker 06-27-2007, 09:09 PM Rivals:
When Novi High School prospect Tyler Hoover committed to Michigan State he became the first player in four years to select the Spartans over the Wolverines.
One of the biggest reasons John L. Smith was not successful at Michigan State was because he did not understand the importance of recruiting the home front. He talked a good game, but the proof was in the pudding.
In only his first year, new Head Coach Mark Dantonio has already gotten one commitment and the Spartans and Wolverines are in heated battles for at least four other top in-state prospects.
Tyler Hoover the newest Spartan
Some fans and analysts have said the Wolverines did not really want Hoover or that they wanted him as a tight end or offensive lineman. Still others downgraded his commitment by calling him a "tweener" prospect. Here is what SpartanMag.com does know.
Since the moment Michigan State began recruiting Hoover they liked him as a defensive end prospect. SpartanMag.com even spoke with Hoover about the tight end offensive line "rumors" and he indicated that every team that offered him did so as a defensive line prospect. He worked out as a DL at both the Michigan State and Michigan camps. He even had a meeting with Coach Lloyd Carr Tuesday after attending UM's camp.
One of the reasons Hoover's stock has been rising so fast as he has kept his athletic ability despite his ever increasing size.
Consider the following:
As a sophomore, he played at 6-5, 210 lbs.
As a junior, he played at 6-6 230lbs
Last night he checked in at 6-7 260 lbs.
Keep in mind that when Hoover was 230-pounds he clocked a 4.57 forty-yard dash. Just recently at 260-pound he clocked a forty yard dash in 4.6 seconds and had a 30-inch vertical jump as well.
As would be expected of someone with a long frame, Hoover's upper body strength has yet to catch up with his lower-body. He is squatting close to 500-pounds and look for his bench press to make significant games between now and when he arrives on campus.
As far as the reasons why Hoover felt Michigan State was the place for him. It simply came down to a meshing of personalities between the Michigan State staff and Hoover. Hoover talked about the bond of trust felt between himself and Coach Dantonio and his staff. He also mentioned the need for defensive ends in Coach Narduzzi's attacking style defense.
So does all this mean that Tyler Hoover is the next incarnation of Bubba Smith? Of course not, but it does mean that Coach Dantonio and his staff are willing to go head-to-head with anyone for any prospect and take their chances.
Will they lose some of those battles? Sure they will, but as in baseball if your success is 33% of the time you probably are headed for the All-Star game. If Coach Dantonio can entice a few more players like Jonas Gray, Fred Smith, Nick Perry and Deon'tae Pannell to join Hoover in East Lansing, then the future should be very bright.
FillyCheezeSteak 06-27-2007, 09:32 PM WOW, a 500 pound squat is sickening. I think at 17 years old that would be very close to a state and/or national record. Has anyone ever been to the powerlifting championships in the state of Michigan at all?
Zip Goshboots 06-27-2007, 10:34 PM You talking to me?
Wow Jethro, I can;t believe you let a tampon eating Detroit News Forum cunt do you like that.
Leave this piece of shit alone, she'll go away, back to the land of mutual Sparty Tea Bagging Country.

Depends on if you are doing squats, 'true squats', or 'deep squats'.
I know a few kids that squat 500, however, not going all the way down.
