Weird time to lose your "top scout/draft coordinator" (a week before the draft). I think Perry is Drew Sharp's cousin, so I guess we won't be seeing any more insider info for Drew.

Pistons' top scout, draft coordinator departs

Perry, 43, lands a job as assistant general manager with the Sonics and gets multiyear deal.

AUBURN HILLS -- With the NBA draft nine days away, the Pistons are losing their top scout and draft coordinator.

Scott Perry, the Pistons' director of player personnel since 2002, has accepted the job as assistant general manager with the SuperSonics.

Perry, 43, was given a multiyear deal. He replaces David Pendergraft, who was fired.

More than likely, George David, the Pistons' director of scouting, will take over Perry's duties in the interim. The Pistons might eventually hire another scout or personnel director.

"We will take some time and make that decision," said John Hammond, Pistons vice president of basketball.

The Pistons have the 15th, 27th and 57th selections in the June 28 draft, which will be in New York.

Perry had been with the Pistons since 2000, hired by Joe Dumars as a college scout. Before that, Perry, a graduate of Wayne State, was the coach at Eastern Kentucky for three seasons. He was an assistant spanning nine seasons with Michigan, California and Detroit Mercy.

One of Perry's perks for going to Seattle is having the No. 2 pick -- an almost no-brainer selection of Kevin Durant of Texas.

So long, Scott Perry

The Pistons have lost a very good man and probably their best scout. Scott Perry, the guy who discovered Tayshaun Prince in an AAU gym in California, has taken the assistant general manger gig with the Sonics. He had been with the Pistons since 2000.

He inherits the No. 2 overall pick, which isn't so bad. His first order of business will be to draft Kevin Durant. That's a win-win, right? More importantly, though, the Sonics have given him a multi-year commitment with a substantial pay raise. Perry was willing to take that even though the future of the franchise is cloudy, at best. The Sonics aren't expected to remain in Seattle beyond next season.

Perry did not leave before making sure the Pistons were set up for draft day. He has organized all the workouts, which will continue through Monday. He has the draft board in order. And he has at least tentatively set up the team's summer league roster.

More than likely, George David will step into Perry's role for this draft. He's the director of scouting and may just assume the director of player personnel title for keeps. But John Hammond and Joe Dumars haven't decided yet how they will fill the void left by Perry. They won't make any decisions until after the draft.

You guys have your resumes up to date?

This is an interesting tidbit.

It looks like Perry tried to sneak in a steal Stuckey from Joe.

The Sonics shopped Ridnour before the draft, hoping to get the Atlanta Hawks' 11th pick for him so they could pursue Eastern Washington's Rodney Stuckey, but the deal fell through.
