Should be tons of schools there this week. Jethro34 06-18-2007, 03:07 PM For over a week there has been speculation that Michigan could pick up a half dozen commits this week. I'm not sure what to expect. I just hope they're aggressive with the great players there. So many people are simply convinced certain guys will commit, much they same as Rojo last season. I'm still not over that (some amazing play from Donovan Warren would help though). Has anyone here ever attended these camps as a player or spectator? I would like some more inside info on what these camps are like. Does Michigan have a huge advantage over other schools since they're the host? Zip Goshboots 06-18-2007, 03:39 PM I've attended them before. Me and a couple buddies got dressed up in an orange jump suit and went out to the stadium to pick up trash. The camps actually suck, though. Too many goddam yelping football players and coaches. Zip Goshboots 06-18-2007, 04:02 PM I'll tell ya about one other time I went to one of these camps. It was in high school, and I went with a couple buddies. Man were we psyched: Michigan Football Camp! We packed our car up the night before with everything: Fishing poles, tents, sleeping bags, food, firewood, blow up dolls, man, we were ready to rock and roll. Then we get thee the night before, and the fucking stadium is locked! How the hell are people supposed to camp there when it's completely shut down? So we hop the fences, get in there, set up our tents, build a nice fire, whip out the beer and the drugs, start roasting hot dogs, and do what your'e supposed to do at camp: Get fucked up and barf everywhere. Thank god they had restrooms there, though, because we couldn't dig up the astroturf to take a shit. So we're out there, sleeping in puddles of barf and beer, and all the sudden we hear all this goddamm yelling and hootin and hollerin', and CRASH! Here come this big fucking jerkoff landing right on top of us, wearing some goddamm gay ass football uniform. The some grumpy as old guy named Bo beats the fuck out of us, and the next thing we know we're in Washtena County jail. Man, that really sucked. Baker 06-18-2007, 05:09 PM Jethro, UM's camp is huge because they allow other schools to attend and recruit there. Therefore, 80 colleges should be represented. UM doesn't get much of an advantage other than the kids actually seeing the stadium and the maize and blue everywhere. UM doesn't get much of an advantage other than the kids actually seeing the stadium and the maize and blue everywhere. One big advantage, though, is that if you DO camp there, and since they have restrooms, you won't accidentally wipe your ass with poison ivy after you take a dump. tommyz 06-19-2007, 06:36 AM Boy, what a way to ruin a thread..... Baker 06-19-2007, 11:09 AM Boy, what a way to ruin a thread..... He has a way of doing that with the off the wall shit. FillyCheezeSteak 06-19-2007, 11:48 AM Jethro, I attended the summer before my junior year. During my time there I was able to meet Charles Woodson and many other Michigan players. I got to meet Lloyd Carr for about 20 seconds and that "for me" was one of the most amazing things to ever happen in my life. But as for the camp here is what happens....... There are two groups of players that attend Michigans camps.....The kind that are there to improve their skills and get recognized by ANY coach and the ones that Michigan knows is there and puts in a group together to be looked at by Michigan coaches. Im not sure if you've been reading about the lineman that are there, but there was a chance that a bunch of them would be there. Khoury (Traverse City), Hueter (North Branch), Dill, , Mealer, O'Neill and any other lineman that is on Michigan's radar are coached by Andy Moeller and his group. Moeller may not specifically coach that group but you can guarantee that he will be watching every second of it. When I was there I was moved into different groups throughout the week, but I got to meet a ton of different coaches both h.s. and college. I got to meet with UCONN's coach back when they were D2 and he gave me his card and some literature which put me on effing cloud 9 since I was only a junior. Possibly the best part of the camp is "Air Force Football." If you ever get to a Michigan camp make sure you get to see this happen. I know this also happens at Michigan State's football camp and I would assume many others. But it is still possibly the sickest thing to watch, especially when they get to the finals. Imagine you have teams of 5 or 7 guys (I don't recall for sure) and they are the best players in the country playing against each other. Last year Mallett's team won the Air Force Football title and Drew Henson won it when I went to camp...........he had some guy named David Terrell to throw to in camp though. If there is anything else you wanna know just ask adn I'd be happy to fill in anything I can for ya. Zip Goshboots 06-19-2007, 02:04 PM He has a way of doing that with the off the wall shit. Just because my Michigan Football Camp story is a little bit different than, say, Drew Henson's doesn't make mine any less relevant to the discussion. Jethro wanted Camp stories, and I gave just two of mine. FillyCheezeSteak 06-19-2007, 06:16 PM Does anyone know which players have received scholarships from the staff during the first two days of camp so far?!? Jethro34 06-19-2007, 11:13 PM I know Gray got his today for sure. No indication that he'll accept it, but he wanted it as a way of proving he was legit. I'm pretty sure I read about some other guys getting their offers, but I can't remember who. I'll try to look back and find it. I'm guessing Art knows. Baker 06-20-2007, 03:12 AM Yeah, I'd be interested to hear the list of guys that received offers. I'm hoping the Gray offer leads McGuffie into believing he's not their sole #1 option at tailback and makes him go elsewhere and then I hope Gray goes to State. I'm having fun in my little make belief land right now. Baker 06-20-2007, 03:22 AM Okay, so the only knock on Gray was that he wasn't a speed demon, more of a punishing inside the tackles runner with high 4.4-4.5 speed to take it outside once he breaks free. FORGET THAT. Not only is Gray looking strong as hell, he just clocked a 4.37 at the Michigan camp topping every single player at every single position. The 4.37 got English and Jackson's attention and it also got an immediate scholarship offer from Michigan and Carr. However, that didn't sway Gray from thinking green and white and becoming a Spartan. Check this out: "I think it would be easy for me say that I don't have any leaders, but that wouldn't be necessarily true because I think Michigan State has been my leader recently," he said. "After Michigan State, I think it's pretty much open. I definitely like Minnesota. I definitely like Nebraska and Louisville and I definitely still like Michigan and Florida. Based on what I know of everything, I think Michigan State is my No. 1." When a decision will come from Gray, however, still remains something to be determined. "Earlier in the process it was real easy for me to say I'm going to take my officials," he said. "I don't think it's that easy anymore after going through the recruiting process. It has been overwhelming for my mom and my family, so if I wanted to get it out of the way, I could do something early, but I think if I take my officials I don't know how much it's going to change my opinion of a school." I want Gray more than ever. This could be a program changing recruit. Artermis 06-20-2007, 07:04 AM Offered Rocco Khoury OG (should be Blue) Marc Anthony CB (probably not going to be Blue) Jonas Gray Athlete (squash any concerns about McGuffie) Almost offered -- OL Deonte Pannell -- LB/RB Brandon Beachum -- LB Kenny Demons So 3 camp offers, no commits. Has anyone seen film on Gray from last year? If you have you would have no doubt why he was not offered until this camp. BTW I am not trying to knock Gray. He looks like the real deal at this camp, but I think Michigan has bigger game to snare than Gray at this point. I would rather UM passed on Gray and got McGuffie and Capers (top 20 RB for next year) than Gray and McGuffie. Ethan Johnson was by far the best player at the camp and he was there all week. He is a DE from the NW (I believe). Baker 06-20-2007, 12:11 PM I think I was accused of this when it came to Manny. The top player in the state is feeling MSU, so Art doesn't want him now? Right. The dude is ripped up and now just clocked a 4.37. Why would you want a "Top 20 back next year" if you've got the #4 running back in the nation sitting right there in your backyard? It would be real interesting if McGuffie went to Michigan and Gray went to State so that we could see how their careers unfold and look back on this. McGuffie is the most impressive player I've ever seen on film, but why the hell isn't he highly ranked then? I'd love to talk to the Rivals guys and find out about that. Baker 06-20-2007, 12:13 PM BTW, I'm calling it now. Not trying to get under the skin of the Michigan fans here, but I've had this hunch the whole time. With no inside info to back it, just my gut, I bet McGuffie goes to Notre Dame. tommyz 06-20-2007, 12:31 PM I think I was accused of this when it came to Manny. I believe he is not the #4 back in the nation.. With that said, I would love him here at U of M....My personal opinion is that I would rather have McGuffie. But I have no problem with gray...If not U of M, I want to see him stay in state and go to MSU.. tommyz 06-20-2007, 12:32 PM BTW, I'm calling it now. Not trying to get under the skin of the Michigan fans here, but I've had this hunch the whole time. With no inside info to back it, just my gut, I bet McGuffie goes to Notre Dame. I dont see that at all...Maybe im wrong though...That is a pure guess on my part Jethro34 06-20-2007, 12:35 PM I guess I'm wondering about Gray. He was the #4 RB according to one site, and yet the team in his backyard was so uninspired that he had to earn an offer by being blown away at the camp before his senior year? Then we have guys saying if you saw him last year, you know why he had to earn his offer. So then what did rivals see that they gave him such a high ranking before the camp? I don't know really what to believe. I don't know if Gray will continue to be amazing throughout the season and into college, I don't know who will be better between him and McGuffie, I don't know if Michigan will get either of them. I just hope they get at least one, and that whoever they get will play up to the hype. Of course I would love both and of course I would want both used in the most productive way possible. In the meantime, while we continue to recruit both, I hope they can fill some of the pieces around either. We were told 6 commits this week. We have 0. Suppoedly Khoury was going to be so excited to get the offer that he would commit instantly. Didn't happen. What's the problem here? Baker 06-20-2007, 12:41 PM Jethro, I just watched his latest highlight video from last year. What I saw was good speed, not great. Apparantly since then it has become great. I saw great cutback ability. I saw strength. I'm guessing Art was expecting to be blown away and you'll never be blown away if a guy doesn't have amazing speed. Speed shows on videos because they break the big one all the time then. I think Gray since then has become a freak physically. He honestly reminds me of Ronnie Brown without pads on. Crazy speed now after working out so hard and big time muscle. I wouldn't worry about Michigan, they'll get plenty of commitments. Talent is never a problem, it's the coaching. Artermis 06-20-2007, 01:00 PM I never said I did not want Gray. I paraphrase a lot of what I wrote previously, but you guys want stuff from that the mods say at Scout, not what my personal opinion is for the most part. Because I do not know dick. I am not at the camp nor do I have any sources at UM other than a guy on the staff there that sends out emails to a group with his own personal opinions about what is going on there (summer workouts, etc.) So not really a source because you just got to get on his mailing list to get the same info. I added the not a knock on Gray, because it was not meant to be and was a reason given for him possibly not given an offer before the camp. Also, my opinion is that I would rather have Capers and McGuffie over gray and McGuffie. No knock on Gray. I hope Michigan gets all 3. Tom is not worried about Stonum or McGuffie being blue and I doubt that if McGuffie decides not to go to UM that he would pick ND. But anything can change. Next Feb is a long ways away. Jordan Najar QB from Houston, could possibly get an offer grew up UM fan. After my surgery for cancer....I try to stay away from childish discussions. I try to stay positive and that is why I am not around here nearly as much. I was putting out so much negative energy and getting so much back that it was not worth posting. So I try to stop by every couple weeks or so and post positive stuff for people to read about what is going on with my beloved Wolverines. Jethro34 06-20-2007, 01:32 PM Your info, Art, has been the best I've ever had access to. So I appreciate what you bring when you come. Good luck with everything and I hope you keep coming around. As for the juvenile conversations, I've got your back and I'll either handle them for you or ignore them. It's all a bunch of opinions and many posters are holding on, trying to live through posts made months ago because for them it's a never-ending quest to one up the other. Probably an inferiority complex. I've done it, though I'm not proud of it. I think, in the end, we're all here for info, but when info is at a loss we revert back to what we know best - hyping our schools more than what they deserve and ripping the other guy more than they deserve. 90% of the fans here - regardless of the school they cheer for - who claim that's not what they do are simply lying and should be ingored more. Geezus H Christ, both Jethro and Art need to go out and buy a fucking whoopee cushion. I mean, there is that whole "try and have some fun" thing. I know it sucks, but give it a try. if it doesn't work, then shove the stick back up your ass. Artermis 06-20-2007, 05:23 PM UM got their first 09 commit today. Big William Campbell (6'4, 300-lb Cass Tech junior) did defense today and not his usual position of offensive tackle. He has good feet and bull rushed his way to the dummy a couple times. He's a work in progress, but got better with coaching and he has impressive size and athletic skills. The Barksdale comparisons are there...I'd say he's not as athletic as Joe, but is as strong and plays meaner. Jethro34 06-20-2007, 07:19 PM Wow. I'm not sure how to react to that. It's good info, but this kid can't sign for another 20 months. If he gets a lot of hype, I wouldn't be shocked to hear that he decides to re-open his recruitment, some of the most irritating but trendy words in high school sports these days. Artermis 06-20-2007, 10:25 PM "Big William Campbell existed in the shadow of former four-star standout Joseph Barksdale at Detroit Cass Tech last year, but those that watched Technicians closely knew that the young 6-6 320-pounder was every bit the prospect that his older teammate was. A few schools began keeping a watchful eye on him, but none had a more persistent glare than that of the University of Michigan. Meanwhile, Campbell was keeping tabs on the programs that were showing him interest. Though pleased with the attention he received from every school courting him… he was most concerned with the amount of interest that came from Ann Arbor. “He already had a lot of other schools wanting to offer him,” said Cass Tech headman and former Michigan Wolverine Thomas Wilcher. “Cincinnati wanted to offer him, Notre Dame wanted to offer… Wisconsin and LSU did too… but Michigan is the school he wanted to go to. All he would say every week is, ‘Coach, I want to go Michigan. If they offer me, I’m going to commit. That’s all he would say.” Campbell got the chance to tender his pledge after a strong showing at Michigan’s summer camp earlier today convinced the Wolverine staff that he was a youngster worthy of receiving an early scholarship offer. “The camp went good,” Campbell said moments ago as he was driving home. “They told me (afterward) that they really liked how I was doing. I didn’t notice at the time because I was focused. They talked to me on the field and then they took me up to the office right before I left and I committed. Coach Carr was happy. It was just on my mind for a long time and my mother and my father and my sister were behind me, so I went ahead and committed.” According to Wilcher, the Wolverines have added not only a versatile player, but one that will be an imposing presence wherever they put him on the field as well. “They recruited him to play defensive line,” Wilcher said. “We’re going to work him hard to get him ready. If they have to move him to offensive line, he can play offensive line. He just wants play.” “Michigan is getting a great player,” he continued. “Will is aggressive, he is intimidating, and he can punish you.”" This should make you feel a little better. FillyCheezeSteak 06-20-2007, 10:55 PM I heard that he listed at 6'4" and 327 lbs, which is HUGE for a junior to be, which would make him about 16 years old or so. I think playing for Cass Tech will help him as they are year in and year out one of the best schools around and Coach Wilcher will help William in the weight room and in the classroom to have him prepared for college. Baker 06-22-2007, 12:31 PM No more news out of AA? Damn, camp is almost over. I was hoping for something shaky up. Fred Smith said he's going to probably announce pretty soon. He had one quote saying something about it's good to know how he'll be coached when discussing working with the UM coaches. Sounds like all but a commitment. However, he said he really likes MSU's coaches and he's visiting there this week. Boy would that be an upset if they snagged him. Not gonna happen though. Only thing that would change that IMO is a Gray commitment before then. Artermis 06-22-2007, 02:19 PM What would you like to know? BTW McGuffie visit is set in the next couple of weeks. The mods expect 5-8 commits over the next 2-3 weeks. Baker 06-22-2007, 03:24 PM What would you like to know? BTW McGuffie visit is set in the next couple of weeks. The mods expect 5-8 commits over the next 2-3 weeks. I thought there would be some commitments seeing that mods were claiming that there would be like 6 this week. Or I thought some other kids might commit to other schools seeing that many are there. I really hope McGuffie doesn't go to Michigan. He's really tight. Artermis 06-23-2007, 05:17 PM Well it depends on your POV of what camp commits are. MOst people consider any commit within 2 weeks of a camp as being a camp commit. Check back in a few weeks. There is a guy named Jim Stefani, he is brillant with regards to giving us a nice view of the best players in Michigan and other places. http://jimstefani.blogspot.com/ That is his assessment of UMs camp. 3. Get ready for some fireworks in the Lone Star State ... yee-haaa (and you heard it here first) ... just a little more patience guys. #3 is from Tom's blog on Scout board. Read into whatever you want, but McGuffie is coming to town next week. Zip Goshboots 06-23-2007, 05:49 PM It’s interesting to note that U-M has had very little success in recruiting both offensive linemen and the state of Illinois since Andy Moeller has been responsible for both at Michigan. Cut and pasted from that blog. Michigan's offensive line has looked pretty average for the last several years now. An upgrade in recruiting and performance is needed immediately. |
