You've gotta be fucking kidding me?????

Now, I know my Razr sucks, but up until now a phone is a phone is a phone. Crackberry, Sidekick, those sweet ass LG's. Hey, all I need it to do is dial a number and have decent reception (the Razr metal casing is a bitch like that).

Thought about upgrading to a Samsung. Ugly, but who gives a fuck. Damn thing run like a diesel. Built like 'em, too (not "Shaq" diesel, but "diesel" diesel, a truck.... no, not Vin Diesel, Zip).

I'm a huge Mac fan, but haven't been keeping tabs on the iPhone. It's not like I'm ready to blow $500 on something I can pay $50 for (just "blew" $500 on a DV camcorder... get your mind out of the gutter, Zip, my old one broke). But man, that's one sweet piece of hardware.

I'm counting my pennies. When they're available (by next year, probably, all sold out... sure to see one on eBay at a 200% mark-up), maybe I'll dump on it.

on the iPhone, i can't imagine how it'd look after a few months of building up scratches. especially since it's got such a huge touch screen area.

Yep, thats about it. try adjust the lighting timer on your buttons so that they only light up during night hours. i've heard that helps along with keeping the second battery on charge while the phone isnt. also i love how solid the camera is. I'll just catch shots as I'm driving.

I love those phones, but I'm a communications industry geek. They lasted forever. They were built like tanks, had good handy grips, and the parts were secured on the bottom by a steel plate. The perfect item with which to club a bitch.

But at the same time, they had to be built like tanks, because if it broke, you had to have the phone company replace it, and...you know how that goes. The good news is that you can plug one of those things in and they still work. And unlike the phones of today, it'll put a fuckin' dent in her weave.

This post was brought to you by Ike Turner.

When I was a kid, I saw a Starsky and Hutch episode where Hutch nailed some big thug in the face with one of these things, and it was lights out for him. And then Hutch used the same phone to order a pizza.
If you so much as breathe on a cell phone, the thing goes so out of whack it'll call someone in China 54 times while you're asleep.

The ex-wife's grandma had this old as all hell wall mounted phone (not exactly the ones above but still rotary dialed). Found out about a year ago she was renting the thing from the phone company for like the last 40 years. She said that's what they had to do when she got phone service for the house and she never new you could buy one. She probably paid $10,000 for that piece of shit over all that time. Poor lady.

My dad did a great job of instilling Jewish pride in me, and making me watch Starsky & Hutch was a small part of it. The great thing about my dad is that he's proud, but he's also got good taste. So Moshe Dayan, Hank Greenberg, Starsky: Yes. Neil Diamond, Hanukkah, Fiddler On The Roof: No.

Anyway, how about those phones?

The iPhone, apparently, works off a full version of OS X. It comes with a full assortment of widgets, Safari RSS web browser, Apple Mail, iTunes, and iPhoto.

And now they've got a deal with YouTube!!!

If you look at it that way, $500 looks mighty good.

You're looking at 40 dollars(data charge) plus whatever your plan is. plus hidden fees from the online websites/services possibly.

And DM, I think you're exaggerating a bit. Its definitely a cut above alot of smartphones based on specs. But its still a smartphone IMO. Also My phone syncs up with the pc the same way.

The iPhone, apparently, works off a full version of OS X. It comes with a full assortment of widgets, Safari RSS web browser, Apple Mail, iTunes, and iPhoto.
I have widgets, IE, RSS, XPress Mail(which is better imo), WMP capable of playing video(with a storage card i could get whole movies on it), mp3, and wav, and Media wizard in place for my camera. Seems about on par with mines, just more for MAc...

I give it kudos on the 4-8 gb storage space(cuts out storage card need for the moment and gives you movies right away online), the 8 hours talk time compared to black jack's 5.5-(7 hours if you adjust the power settings) time.

What i didnt like was this.

Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced.

Overall though if it lives up to the hype, its gonna be a damn hot item.

The reason they had to "get a deal" with YouTube is that they can't get the phone to handle Flash as they originally hinted at. Not necessarily a good thing.

Youtube is recoding a bunch of videos to make them work with the phone rather than Apple making the phone work with the videos.

If this thing is as buggy as the Ipods were, I'd wait a year or two at least if I were you.

A girl I know has the latter(Motorola Q). Its pretty much the phone the Blackjack was built to challenge. So it should be a pretty good phone. But I'm not a fan of motorola's phones. To me they are that consistent in the durability department. But it does have a cool rubber protecting shell around it on the phone she had, I did like that.

Haven't messed with the 8525 though, but it runs on a samsung processor and should be a high quality piece by far. In fact from the looks of it its damn near a blackjack w/o the mini size of course. I'd definitely go with it over the Q myself. But again I'm not a motorola fan.

I like the last paragraph...'hacking the brain'

NJ teen says he's unlocked Apple's iPhone

NEW YORK — A 17-year-old hacker has broken the lock that ties Apple's iPhone to AT&T's wireless network, freeing the most hyped cell phone ever for use on the networks of other carriers, including overseas ones.

George Hotz of Glen Rock, N.J., confirmed Friday that he had unlocked an iPhone and was using it on T-Mobile's network, the only major U.S. carrier apart from AT&T that is compatible with the iPhone's cellular technology.

In a video posted to his blog, he holds an iPhone that displays "T-Mobile" as the carrier.

• Click here for Hotz's blog.

While the possibility of switching from AT&T to T-Mobile may not be a major development for U.S. consumers, it opens up the iPhone for use on the networks of overseas carriers.

"That's the big thing," said Hotz, in a phone interview from his home.

The phone, which combines an innovative touch-screen interface with the media-playing abilities of the iPod, is sold only in the U.S.

• Click here to bid on the unlocked iPhone on eBay (auction ends Aug. 30).

RelatedStories
Review: iPhone Challengers Don't Quite Cut It Skype: Phone Outage Triggered by Global Microsoft Update AT&T Inc. (T) spokesman Mark Siegel said the company had no comment, and referred questions to Apple (AAPL). A call to Apple was not immediately returned.

Hotz said the companies had not been in touch with him.

The hack, which Hotz posted Thursday to his blog, is complicated and requires skill with both soldering and software. It takes him about two hours to perform.

Since the details are public, it seems likely that a small industry may spring up to buy U.S. iPhones, unlock them and send them overseas.

"That's exactly, like, what I don't want," Hotz said. "I don't want people making money off this."

He said he wished he could make the instructions simpler, so users could modify the phones themselves.

"But that's the simplest I could make them," Hotz said.

The next step, he said, would be for someone to develop a way to unlock the phone using only software.

• Click here for FOXNews.com's Personal Technology Center.

The iPhone has already been made to work on overseas networks using another method, which involves copying information from the Subscriber Identity Module , a small card with a chip that identifies a subscriber to the cell-phone network.

The SIM-chip method does not require any soldering, but does requires special equipment, and it doesn't unlock the phone — each new SIM chip has to be reprogrammed for use on a particular iPhone.

Both hacks leave the iPhone's many functions, including a built-in camera and the ability to access Wi-Fi networks, intact. The only thing that won't work is the "visual voicemail" feature, which shows voice messages as if they were incoming e-mail.

Since the details of both hacks are public, Apple may be able to modify the iPhone production line to make new phones invulnerable.

The company has said it plans to introduce the phone in Europe this year, but it hasn't set a date or identified carriers.

There is apparently no U.S. law against unlocking cell phones. Last year, the Library of Congress specifically excluded cell-phone unlocking from coverage under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Among other things, the law has been used to prosecute people who modify game consoles to play a wider variety of games.

Hotz collaborated online with four other people, two of them in Russia, to develop the unlocking process.

"Then there are two guys who I think are somewhere U.S.-side," Hotz said.

He knows them only by their online handles.

Hotz himself spent about 500 hours on the project since the iPhone went on sale on June 29.

On Thursday, he put the unlocked iPhone up for sale on eBay, where the price was above $2,000 midday Friday. The model, with 4 gigabytes of memory, sells for $499 new.

"Some of my friends think I wasted my summer, but I think it was worth it," he told The Record of Bergen County, which reported Hotz's hack Friday.

Hotz heads for college on Saturday. He plans to major in neuroscience — or "hacking the brain!" as he put it to the newspaper — at the Rochester Institute of Technology .

??

I can listen to music while I surf/text. I love my iPhone 3G. It's one of those things you just need to use for a while to appreciate. I've always thought that merging devices like a phone and an mp3 player would never really work, but my iPhone's a pleasure to use.

The third party app support is growing quick and some of the programs are really sweet. I just downloaded a program called Urbanspoon that's like a random restaurant picker. It uses the GPS to find your location and recommends restaurants in the area. Then you can use the phone to call the restaurant or the internet browser to read reviews on it. Sportstap is my favorite NBA/MLB/NFL scoreboard that's updated live. The App Store (also available on the iPod touch) is really where the iPhone's going to take off as a bonafide platform. Some of the apps are so clever that I can only imagine how cool they'll become as they develop.

The soft keyboard takes getting used to, but it's not THAT bad. Harware, tactile feedback > software keyboard, but I'm used of it already. My typing speed is comparable to typing on my previous Samsung Blackjack.
