View Full Version : Theo Papaloukas as a backup guard?
Glenn 06-15-2007, 09:04 AM Anybody know anything about this guy?
Curtis (Lansing): I hear that Theo Papaloukas is interested in coming to the NBA, that guy from Greece who torched the USA in the World Championships. One of the teams he’s interested in is Detroit. Any interest there?
:langlois:
Langlois: The Pistons have a strong presence in Europe and they’ve been one of the NBA’s elite teams for the past five years, so it’s not surprising Papaloukas – generally considered the best player in the world not in the NBA – would have interest in them. At 6-foot-7, Papaloukas can play both guard spots and is regarded as a terrifically heady player who isn’t great at anything in particular. If the Pistons’ re-sign Chauncey Billups, as expected, Papaloukas might have greater value – and be able to win a bigger contract – out of somebody else. But, sure, he’s a name to keep in mind for the Pistons – again, after the draft.
WTFchris 06-15-2007, 09:37 AM go for it. I'd rather take a chance on someone like that then a has been vet PG. It would be a good fall back if we miss out on Pruitt with #27.
Uncle Mxy 06-15-2007, 10:23 AM Anything to revitalize Greektown... it's all been downhill since the bellydancing place became a shitty-ass topless bar.
Glenn 06-15-2007, 10:24 AM This guy sort of sounds like Carlos Delfino II.
darkobetterthanmelo 06-15-2007, 12:30 PM Sounds to me like Pepe Sanchez part 2
while the video doesn't show much and the music convinces me that i have ADD......eh, why not?
he seems to handle the ball better than Delfino (compared above) and he's a strong finisher. he's also taller than Pepe Sanchez. plus, he plays PG and looks like he's a decent passer. at 6'7", it might be worth a gamble.

WTFchris 06-15-2007, 01:22 PM He basically looks like Nash minus a little quickness from that video. Very shifty and unorthadox like Nash. He's a lot bigger though, so he has the size to finish around the rim. Probably doesn't play a lick of defense, but you can teach that too I guess. RIP didn't play defense when we first got him either.
Glenn 06-15-2007, 01:31 PM RIP didn't play defense when we first got him either.
I know.
WTFchris 06-15-2007, 01:36 PM He reminds me a lot of Manu with better handles. Doesn't mean it will translate to the NBA though.
MikeMyers 06-15-2007, 01:51 PM Don't really have much to lose.
micknugget 06-15-2007, 07:39 PM They really didn't show if he has a very good jumper in the video. That would matter in this league.
Glenn 06-16-2007, 05:56 AM This guy sort of sounds like Carlos Delfino II.
Hmmm...could be...
Varsity 06-16-2007, 10:59 AM go for it. I'd rather take a chance on someone like that then a has been vet PG. It would be a good fall back if we miss out on Pruitt with #27.
Ugghh. Not offense, but I'm so sick of under-developed, "still earning their position", potential picks. We never seem to develop them here. I'd much rather find a PG in a PG's body with one of those picks or take a Pruitt flyer in the second rd. (if we could somehow score an earlier pick)

Ladies and gentleman, I give you...Marko Jaric!!!!
Actually, this guy is really talented, I saw the Greece game...I'm still not sure his speed translates.
Zekyl 06-17-2007, 12:30 PM Fuck it. Worth a shot. If we can sell him on coming here to be the primary backup PG and share backup SG duties, I'm all for it. What do we have to lose?
theMUHMEshow 06-17-2007, 11:15 PM Guy turns the ball over too damn much.
WTFchris 06-18-2007, 08:57 AM WTF is going on here? The guy is a free agent, not a draft pick. It costs us nothing but cap space to try the guy. What do we have to lose?
Uncle Mxy 06-18-2007, 10:59 AM It costs cap space, especially if there's competition for his services. If he's the best in Europe, he's getting paid. We won't snag him for the LLE.
WTFchris 06-18-2007, 11:49 AM Correct. They said he'd want a few million to come over here. Big deal. You just sent Delfino packing and you have Hunter who could retire. I suspect Hill would sign cheap too. If he wants a ton, forget him. It's worth risking a few million though.
theMUHMEshow 06-19-2007, 02:15 AM Correct. They said he'd want a few million to come over here. Big deal. You just sent Delfino packing and you have Hunter who could retire. I suspect Hill would sign cheap too. If he wants a ton, forget him. It's worth risking a few million though.
3 year 12 million to grab this jerkoff
Zekyl 06-19-2007, 07:28 AM 3 year 12 million to grab this jerkoff
That's a big chunk of our MLE for a backup guard. I'm not so sure about that.
@ 4 mill a year, you better be sure he's good. Especially at 3 years. If only two, he's an ending contract next year. How old is he?

Indiana said the samething with Saurunas, for a team as cheap as we seem to be..we're just asking for cost cuts elsewhere if we're stuck with him.

If the guy can truly defend and play at PG, then it's worth it. Good backup PGs are like good backup Cs... a rare commodity and worth a lot as a consequence.
Glenn 06-21-2007, 08:11 AM Guys, we just need to put our faith in Tony Ronzone.
When has he ever done us wrong?
Zekyl 06-21-2007, 09:20 AM Guys, we just need to put our faith in Tony Ronzone.
When has he ever done us wrong?
Never, he's the best. Without Ronzone, would we ever have won that championship? Hell No! Darko, Delfino, and Glyniadakis were key draft picks and we're damn lucky to have guys that pan out as well as they did.
Zekyl 06-21-2007, 09:21 AM Actually, now that Delfino's gone, I don't think we have a single foreigner on our roster.........
WTFchris 06-21-2007, 09:44 AM I know you guys are ripping on him, but he did get us Memo that was a key piece to us winning it all.
I get the feeling from the Ford interview though that Joe might be leery of getting another Euro player that doesn't fit the Pistons style.
Cross 06-30-2007, 11:20 PM The Los Angeles Lakers have offered a multi-year contract to 30-year-old guard Theodoros Papaloukas, according to Eleftheros Tipos, a newspaper in Greece.
Papaloukas, a Greek native who is listed at 6 feet 7, was the Euroleague player of the year last season with CSKA Moscow, and is widely thought to be the best point guard in Europe.
Smush Parker gone and Jordan Farmar needing time to develop, Papaloukas could become a backcourt starter for the Lakers.
Kstat 06-30-2007, 11:24 PM I don't see how they sign him after spending two straight 1st round picks on PGs.
Varsity 07-07-2007, 09:48 AM Theo just signed a 3 yr deal in Europe and doesn't have an out until 2009 apparently. So I guess this topic is tabled until at least next season if not later than that.
DrRay11 07-07-2007, 10:15 AM Yeah, it was tabled anyway what with us drafting three guards and all.
