Passenger in Smith car dies; player doing OK

NEPTUNE, N.J. -- A New Jersey man who was thrown from Denver Nuggets guard J.R. Smith's sport utility vehicle when it overturned last weekend died Monday night in the hospital, state police said.

Andre Bell, 21, was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle Smith was driving when it went through a stop sign, collided with another car and flipped over at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Millstone Township.

Bell, who was in a coma, died from head injuries at 6 p.m. at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, said state police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Jones.

Smith, 21, who was also thrown from the sport vehicle, remained at Jersey Shore on Monday with an injured left shoulder and numerous scratches, Jones said.

Neither Smith nor Bell were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, he said.

Nuggets spokesman Eric Sebastian said he did not know when Smith might be discharged.

"I think it's too early to say," Sebastian said. "From everything we hear, he's going to be OK."

Sebastian said he did not know if Smith would miss any training, but added, "We didn't hear anything that would indicate his career would be jeopardized in any way."

Smith has been issued two traffic tickets for failure to stop at stop sign and improper passing, Jones said. Both carry fines, though the amount was not immediately available.

A third person in Smith's car and the driver of the car he hit had only minor injuries.

Smith had been a star at Lakewood High School and St. Benedict's Prep in Newark before being the 18th overall pick of New Orleans in the 2004 NBA draft. He averaged 13.0 points in 63 games for Denver this past season.

Well-traveled coach Brown misses coaching, interested in Kings' job
ESPN.com news services

Updated: June 16, 2007, 2:46 AM ET

Larry Brown, the veteran NBA vagabond coach who had a disappointing single season coaching the New York Knicks in his most recent stint on the bench, would be interested in getting back into coaching with the Sacramento Kings, a newspaper reported.

"I want to get back," Brown told the Sacramento Bee from his home in Philadelphia. "I miss it terribly. I haven't lost the passion to teach and coach. I don't want to end my career at 23-59. I feel I can do better. I look at Sacramento ... I respect the heck out of Geoff [Petrie]. I coached half that team. I don't mind going somewhere that's rebuilding, but wherever I go, I want everybody to feel that I'm the right person."

Brown joined the Philadelphia 76ers as executive vice president in January after being fired after one season by the Knicks. Brown, 66, has coached 11 teams in the ABA, NCAA and NBA. He won an NCAA championship at Kansas (1988) and an NBA title in Detroit (2004). He also coached at UCLA.

Recently, Brown has been considered a possible replacement for open head coaching jobs in Charlotte and Memphis before those positions were filled.

At least the Kings provided a surprise finish to the longest of coaching races.

Nearly two months to the day after they fired Eric Musselman and after five other teams filled vacancies, the Kings named Reggie Theus as their new head coach Tuesday evening.

LOL @ the Maloofs for hiring Theus. They've driven this team into the ground.

Now watch, Reggie will get them into the playoffs or something.

Bonzi Wells has decided against a run at free agency and will return to the Houston Rockets next season, his agent, Bill Duffy, said Saturday.

Wells had until Monday to reach a decision, but Duffy said the paperwork was completed Saturday to opt in to his current contract, worth $2.8 million.

Maybe there was a chance to get Bonzi...now there isnt.

Maybe there is a better chance at Battier then?

I think I might rather have Bonzi than Battier. We need the scoring. Then again, Bonzi can be locker room trouble.

Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace will become an unrestricted free agent Sunday after deciding not to extend his contract for another season.

Wallace, who led Charlotte in scoring last season with 18.1 points a game, will explore all options, his agent, Rob Pelinka, said Tuesday.

Rob Pelinka seems to be doing pretty well for himself these days.

I would have inserted a pic of Pelinka in his Wolverines uni here, if one actually existed (I looked).

Very little negotiating will be necessary before the Orlando Magic signs Dwight Howard to a five-year contract extension that could be worth an estimated $85 million, serving as the long-term centerpiece for the franchise.

Although the signing might not be done until the business of free agency has begun next month, his presence and the talk of the Magic's commitment to him will be used to help lure any free agent who is wavering.

I hadn't seen this reported anywhere yet, but the Suns shed some more payroll by sending James Jones to the Blazers, I'm not sure about the details yet, as this is pretty sketchy.

http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/

Late in the evening, the Blazers closed a deal to acquire forward James Jones from Phoenix without giving up a player. Other trades are possible, if not likely, in coming days.

Bobcats waive veteran guard Knight

June 29, 2007

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Charlotte Bobcats waived veteran Brevin Knight on Friday, leaving the team without a backup point guard.

Knight had a buyout clause in his contract worth $1.5 million. He was scheduled to make just more than $4 million next season.

One of the Bobcats' first free-agent signings, Knight started in the team's inaugural season in 2004-05. Raymond Felton, selected with the fifth pick in the 2005 draft, eventually replaced Knight in the starting lineup.

Now, the Bobcats likely will need to sign another point guard to back up Felton, who averaged 14 points and seven assists last season.

The 31-year-old Knight averaged 9.1 points and 6.6 assists per game last season but was limited to 45 games.
