View Full Version : Billy Donovan to the Orlando Magic

I just heard that the Orlando Sentinel is reporting that Billy Donovan has met with the Magic this morning and they offered him a STUPID contract and they expect him to take the offer in the next few days and become the coach of the Orlando Magic. This is a huge deal in both NBA terms and college terms. I will repost this in the NBA thread so lets talk about what this means for the two time defending champs, the incoming recruits (including Jai Lucas who just signed) and the the next few years of the SEC? Also, who do they get to replace him seeing as every single coach is settled and moved on to recruiting for next year. Will we hear any Izzo rumors? Tubby back to the SEC? Rick Barnes? Mike Montgomery? Some stud assistant coach?

Well, his whole team left, he might as well cash in and try the big stage. That might be one less school robbing Izzo of good recruits.

They better not even touch Izzo or I go down there personally and cut Jeremy Foley's nuts off. Izzo is turning MSU elite and Florida better not screw that up. Florida won't go after an assistant either, they will probably good looks to Barnes(like Filly said) or a ex-NBA coach.

Izzo wouldn't go to any other NCAA school IMO. None. not even Duke. He's a michigan man, and was an assistant at MSU. Unless he started somewhere before that, he has no other NCAA ties, right? he's not leaving unless he decides to try the NBA, and I doubt that. He already had a chance to do that and passed on it.

Glenn
05-31-2007, 03:37 PM
Montgomery is actually a pretty decent option.

Didn't Donovan just sign a mammoth extension at Florida? And bring in the last stud recruit from the class of 2007?
Wow, if this is true it could shake the doors off that program. Back-to-back and then to the cellar if they can't keep their recruits.

The collective sphincter of MSU nation just tightened up.

Here we go again! It is unbelievable just how bad the UM faithful want Izzo to leave State. Okay, Izzo didn't leave for KENTUCKY. Do you think he'd leave for a school that has absolutely no history outside of the last two years? Can we give it a rest already? Every single time a job opens, the wolvies want to throw Izzo's name out there so they can jerk off at the thought of him leaving. He's been rumored for every single big job since 99. Has he left?

Can this for once be about the subject? Donovan leaving is huge and I love it. This is one of the few people I actually want bailing on college bball. Hey Billy, you'll fit right in in the NBA...you're great at buying players. Let's hope they give him the GM job as well.

It amazes me how sports fans can't control themselves. One minute you suck, the next minute you are God. Don't get me wrong, winning back to back titles is sick. However, when you do that as a result of you buying the best talent, it doesn't matter. Before the last two years, Donovan was known as the coach that always got booted in the first round and his teams played no D. Did he magically change over night? NO. He just got more talent. Now all of a sudden he's the hottest coach in the nation. It's unbelievable how hot and cold people get based on the extremely recent past.

Jethro34

Michigan fan mentions Tressel or Carroll and they're whining.
State fan mentions Donovan and it's accepted.
Hmmm...

Anyhow, I'm not here to defend Billy. As much as State fan is pissed about Anthony Roberson, Michigan fan is pissed about Al Horford. There's no doubt this guy is shady. Generally a school magically finds all the goods after the coach leaves, but there's no way Florida finds it with two championships on the line.

Seriously interested to see if their recruiting class falls apart though. 5 commits all from guys in Rivals top 70. 3 of them, including both 5 star guys, are from Florida so I don't know if they grew up Gator fans or not. But Jai Lucas and Alex Tyus could easily be gone.
What's the rule on that? The signing period is over now, but wouldn't they be released from their LOI with a coaching change if they asked? And then is there an exception made for them? With as messed up as some of the NCAA rules are, I'm not sure what the story is.

It is not unbelievable, especially because it isn't true. No UM fan disrespects The Izzo; we'd like to see UM elevate to his level.Nevermind, though, this is just Tre's delusional mind at work, misreading and misrepresenting everything he misreads

Do you think he'd leave for a school that has absolutely no history outside of the last two years?
Yes, especially since he is at a school now that had a two year history when he took over

Can we give it a rest already? Every single time a job opens, the wolvies want to throw Izzo's name out there so they can jerk off at the thought of him leaving. He's been rumored for every single big job since 99. Has he left?
Does that mean the national media is jerking off at the thought of him leaving also? The national media links The Izzo with every job from Kentucky to customer service at Rent-A-Wreck. We don't make this shit up, Tre, we just relay the info that is out there

Can this for once be about the subject? Donovan leaving is huge and I love it. This is one of the few people I actually want bailing on college bball. Hey Billy, you'll fit right in in the NBA...you're great at buying players.
Typical Sparty Inferiority Complex. Jealousy. Watching someone else succeed and not being able to believe it is for real. Rationalizing. Minimalizing. Pathetic.

Using the qualifying term "extremely recent" past. The Izzo is still living off a past that is getting further and further away. Two seasons in a row with first round flops in the NCAA. Not acknowledging that without Mateen Cleaves and Mo Peet, The Izzo has won NO championships. Hmmmm Could it be that The Izzo is BETTER when he has BETTER players? Hmmmmm?

05-31-2007, 10:46 PM
yup.

i'd do the same thing if im billy d, and so would anyone else. he now has 40 million dollars, even if he gets fired tomorrow. and no chance in the world he sees the end of that contract. so in 2-3 years, he can go back to college, or even hs if he likes, and take any job he wants.

i have no idea why nba gm's dont know what everyone else does: the qlties that make you a good college coach dont make you a good pro-coach. although billy seems like the kind of coach that could have more nba success than a tom izzo or bobby knight.

Jethro34
06-01-2007, 06:58 AM
I have no plans to actually move it there, I'm just anticipating that it has the potential to be on that level. If all depends on how Tre chooses to respond. If he ignores it, it dies. If he simply plays the "you're so retarded, do you even think before you type you completely untrue statements?" card it never realizes its potential either. However, if he dissects it and goes after you completely it could become an epic Zip v Tre battle.

Wow Zippy,
You are horrible at talking shit. Let me help you out, next time you want to talk shit, post material that is true. We are all well informed fans here, we’re going to know when you make shit up.

Zip: MSU no history before Izzo other than two years?
Okay, we’re a Top 10 program All Time. You don’t get there with a couple of years of success. Steve Smith years, Skiles years, Fire and Ice years, etc. etc.

Zip: Inferiority Complex?
Do you know how stupid you sound? ESPN had us as the #2 program of the past decade. Andy Katz had us as the #1 program of the past decade. How the hell can you have an inferiority complex when you are at the top?!! Dumbass.

Zip: Can’t stand Florida’s success so you make up NCAA violations.
Do you homework. Roy Williams reported Donovan for violations. Donovan just covers his tracks well. Florida has a booster who is famous for his Europe trips. They coax recruits to take unofficial visits and this booster takes them to Europe. Once they return from their trip, they commit every time. This happened with Roberson and Horford. Roberson sat next to my Dad at a State basketball game right behind the bench and they both went to the locker room after the game and they talked the whole time. Roberson told him he was going to State for sure, the following weekend he took an unexpected “unofficial” visit to Florida (tons of inner-city Saginaw kids can afford to pay for trips to Florida out of their pocket) and took a trip to Europe. Came back and signed with Florida. Do a little homework, all MSU and UM fans know Donovan is shady with the exception of the uninformed (Zip).

BTW, You do know that MSU owns Florida right? We beat them in the National Championship game. Followed it with a win in 01 when both teams were Top 5. Then followed that up again when we destroyed #2 seed Florida led by Roberson on way to the Elite 8. Boy, I just shit on your inferiority theory huh?

Zip: No Championships without Mateen and Mo Pete.
More untrue bullshit. 01- No Mateen, No Mo Pete, Spent a great portion of the year ranked #1. Big Ten Champions that year and went to the Final Four AGAIN. Davis and the boys also went to the Final Four if you remember and whether you want to admit that a Regional Championship is a Championship or not, the Final Four is Championship caliber accomplishment.

Go ahead, tell us some more stories. I just took a dump on your whack ass post, care to try again?

I would have to cosign the fact that Michigan fans are NOT responsible for Izzo's name being mentioned. More often than not, you can find it mentioned by someone from ESPN, SI, TSN, etc. As far-reaching as Wolverine nation can be, they do not make up the majority of all sports writers. So sorry, that would be wrong. Perhaps what you mean to say is that you ignore mainstream media and focus and obsess over Wolverines passing it along.

Two quick points before I go to work:

1. Two candidates for the Florida job (the reason the thread is here). Anthony Grant (75%) and Jay Wright (25%) are the main targets that Jeremy Foley is looking at and it sounds like Grant will be the choice with the blessing of Donovan who is helping in the search.

2. Tre -- Take it as a fucking compliment that Izzo is such an amazing coach that he will get mentioned for every MAJOR job. We all know he is probably a Top 3 coach in CBB and is on par with Coach K. As a Michigan fan I know that Tom isn't going anywhere, but it is a FACT that his name will be mentioned for MAJOR jobs and it has nothing to do with us or anyone else in the state of Michigan. Coach Izzo is the man, point blank!!!

FillyCheezeSteak

If I was a UNC fan I would mention Coach K for every major job.
If I was a DUKE fan I would mention Roy Williams for every major job.
If I was a UCLA fan I would mention Pete Carroll for every major job.
If I was a TEXAS A&M fan I would mention Rick Barnes for every major job.
If I was a TEXAS fan I would mention Bob Stoopes for every major job.

Do you see how it works? We live here so we mention Tom Izzo. Izzo is a great coach and falls in this category. Unfortunately you're going to have to live with it. If Flip Saunders were to lose game 6 I can betcha there will be at least one Tom Izzo to the Pistons rumor over the next 4 months from someone in the country.

Yes, Chris, but FIRST:
Look at our man Tre.
Dar Tucker committs to DePaul, and he's all "Headline: Dar Tucker paid to go to DePaul"
Keith Nichol decommitts to Sparty and ends up at Oklahoma, and he's all "Headline: Keith Nichols cousins dog tells my cousin Nichol's arm is in a sling"
And then Delvin Roe, a SOLID UNC lean, ends up in East Lansing, and NOT ONE UM fan or sour UNC fan cries like a punked prison bitch and comes up with something like "Headline: The Izzo has pictures of Delvin Roe blowing LeBron James". Noooo, we're all "Wow, I hope Michigan can do that"
Yes, the as usual classy Michigan fans are complaining about...MICHIGAN!!! And not inventing stories to make it seem so weird that anyone wouldn't want to be a Sparty.

Tre, again, someone isn;t worked because you are holding your breath til you turn blue and say so. They are worked when you actually work them, and with every post you dig a hole of incomprehensible futility that not even your next "EXCLUSIVE" (which will again be bullshit) will help you out of.

Exactly! That Jethro post is just more Michigan hypocrite bs. When I make a little joke in a Michigan thread, the Michigan fans go off about it. When they make one about State, I'm flying off the handle for no reason. Look back to the Michigan football threads last year (all 97 of them) and you'll see that they went off if I even gave an opinion that UM wasn't the best team in the country.
