Probably hard to tell. You can only REALLY see it when they're snarling while fighting pidgeons.

Also if more than one goose is geese, would more than one mongoose be mongeese?

I've been there several times.

It's not my bag, but it can be a nice place if you have younger kids.

We take my son to see the butterfly gardens each year. They have thousands of different butterflies loose in a large indoor garden area with a simulated tropical climate (holy humidity!).

Other than that, it's one of those places that you visit once and you say, "well, I've done that now".

Mayweather events add punch to July 4 weekend

Friday, June 20, 2008
By Caitlin M. Foyt
Grand Rapids Press

GRAND RAPIDS -- People heading downtown July 4-6 should look for such celebrities as Ray J, Lil' Jon and Brandy.

Monica, Tank, Vivica Fox and Jackie Long also have confirmed they will be attending the Floyd Mayweather Foundation's Fourth of July Family Festival "Stars on the Grand" celebration.

"They will be sprinkled throughout the weekend. Some will perform at one place or be at another event, but everyone won't be at the same place," said Tasha Robinson-White, president of Floyd Mayweather Foundation and Mayweather Music.

Many more celebrities have been invited and may show up unannounced during the three-day celebration, which covers two distinct events, she added.

The downtown family festival "Stars on the Grand" is focused on community wellness, while "Round 13," presented by Mayweather's music promotions company, is a tribute to his life and career.

Ottawa Avenue will be closed throughout the weekend between Oakes Street SW and West Fulton Street and between Monroe Center and Lyon Street NW. Pearl Street NW will be closed from Monroe Avenue to Ionia Avenue. Fountain Street NW will be closed from Ottawa Avenue to Ionia Avenue.

The areas will have inflatables, health and wellness booths, sports courts and 10 local food vendors.

Parking Lots 2, 4 and 5 behind Van Andel Arena, 130 West Fulton St., will be closed to make room for a carnival, local car show and strong man competition.

"It's all been approved, but there are some last-minute things coming together," said Todd Tofferi, special events coordinator for Grand Rapids.

"It's a pretty big thing to pull off the first year, but I didn't see any reason why it can't be done. It is ambitious, but it's doable."

Family event
Mayweather's festival will kick off July 4, beginning with a three-day carnival, Tofferi said. The carnival will be open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon until 6 p.m. on Sunday. Day passes will cost $20, and ticket costs for individual attractions will vary.

Saturday will feature a professional Strongman competition and a car show will display local names behind Van Andel Arena.

"These are the competitors you see on ESPN," Robinson-White said.

Earlier reports of a performance by The Temptations have been retracted by organizers of Floyd Mayweather Foundation.

A retirement party
Floyd Mayweather will celebrate his retirement from professional boxing the same weekend with a celebration he's dubbed "Round 13."

"In boxing, there are 12 rounds, and now it's about what's next," Robinson-White explained.

Various parties throughout the weekend will include a 1970s and 1980s themed roller-skating party, concert after-party, "green carpet" celebration and bowling after-party.

The roller-skating party is for ages 21-and-older only. Costumes related to the 1970s/1980s theme are required, Robinson-White said. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or at the door for $20.

Afterward, the public is welcome to attend a concert at The Intersection, 133 Grandville Ave. SW, with headliner Ray J, and other Billboard Hot 100 artists Lil' Jon and Danity Kane Tickets are $25.

A green carpet event, which is named for the specially made green carpets that will cover the ground, will highlight the life of Floyd Mayweather. The event strictly calls for black and white dress.

Guests will meet 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Celebration Cinema's Studio 28, 1350 28th St. SW, for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

Mayweather will speak briefly before showing a two-hour film chronicling the past 20 years of his life and career. The evening will end with a 10 p.m. bowling party at a location to be announced.

Press sports columnist David Mayo charged with growing marijuana

David Mayo

GRAND RAPIDS -- A Grand Rapids Press sports columnist today was charged with growing marijuana at his Northeast Grand Rapids home.

David Mayo, 48, was arraigned in Grand Rapids District Court on charges of manufacture of more than 20 but less than 200 plants, a seven-year felony, and also maintaining a drug house, a two-year high-court misdemeanor, at his home on Fuller Avenue NE.

Mayo turned himself into the Kent County Jail this morning, where he was housed while awaiting arraignment. A warrant for his arrest was issued by the prosecutor Friday.

His lawyer, Bruce Block, said Mayo is cooperating with police. Block said the plants were for personal use and Mayo was not selling them.

"This wasn't heavy drugs or anything like that," Block said.

Mayo appeared in court briefly by video and told the judge he understood the charges. He said he has lived in Grand Rapids for 23 years. He has no prior criminal history.

His probable cause hearing is scheduled for Feb. 19, and he was released on a personal recognizance bond.

Mayo has been employed at The Press since 1985 and has covered collegiate and professional sports, including the World Series and Super Bowl. He specializes in boxing coverage and has traveled the country to report on the career of Floyd Mayweather. A native of Kirby, Ark., he is a member of the Boxing Writers Association of America.

Press Publisher Dan Gaydou said the newspaper has just become aware of the allegations. Because this matter involves employer and employee privacy, there will be no further comment at this time, he said.

WBBL adds FM, WKLQ goes only online
Swap already in place

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - In a move embracing present-day realities and the future, WKLQ Radio will become an online-only station while WBBL will take over WKLQ's radio position at 107.3 FM, becoming the largest sports signal in the market.

WBBL (AM 1340 The Ball) will simulcast its signal on 107.3. The Ball currently carries the Detroit Tigers, the Detroit Lions, the Detroit Red Wings, the West Michigan Whitecaps and MSU football and basketball. Sister station WLAV will continue to air most Tigers games this season.

Putting sports on a 50,000 watt signal "is a large investment. It will give us more power to reach more people with a unique opportunity to bring great talk and great teams with an even more expanded spot for local sports," said Citadel regional president Matt Hanlon in a press release.

WKLQ will continue to feature active rock, only completely online. Hanlon said, “More than 70 percent of the current WKLQ listeners use the Web site weekly,” said Matt Hanlon, regional president, Citadel Broadcasting Company. “This new technology and direct connection all the time is designed to get closer to the needs of this audience; it is where they want us to be.”

I hope the gig is not anytime soon. ArtPrize is going on starting tomorrow through mid-Oct and The Bob is like ground zero. It's going to be a mob scene.

My advice would be, don't park out in the street on Monroe, even with your hazards on, to unload, you'll get a ticket (even though they let beer trucks, UPS, etc unload there). cost me $40 one time for a 5 minute unload job.

There's a tiny lot to the side of the building with about 10 spaces in it, if you can get in there to unload, that would be best.

Enjoy the Dutch beauties.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (Michigan Radio) - Tonight, thousands of people in Grand Rapids will try to break into the Guinness World Records for the largest zombie walk. And, yes, that is a real category.

Last year, about 4,000 people showed up for the first Grand Rapids Zombie Walk. It was organized by college student Rob Bliss. Since then, Seattle put on a bigger zombie walk and it now holds the title.

Bliss says it's time to take back that title. He's already started the process of getting the event certified by Guinness .

"They are officially going to be reviewing this event," he says. "I have to send in the application with all the info after the event and I'll hear back in a couple of weeks after the event."

Bliss says he expects as many as 15,000 people to show up at this year's zombie walk. To participate, you just need to dress up like a zombie, and show up at Calder Plaza at 8 o'clock with an appetite for brains.

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley cancels today's appearance at Grand Rapids Economic Club

By Jim Harger | The Grand Rapids Press
November 16, 2009, 11:45AM

GRAND RAPIDS -- Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley has canceled his noon appearance at the Grand Rapids Economic Club today due to the death of Chicago School Board President Michael Scott -- a Daley appointee.

Chicago police discovered Scott's body in the Chicago River early this morning, according to Chicago news sources. He reportedly died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Scott served in a number of positions under Daley and was a long-time figure in Chicago politics, serving under mayors Jane Byrne, Harold Washington, Eugene Sawyer and Richard Daley.

Craziest 6 or so hours of TV I've ever seen. I drive many of these streets every day. So surreal. The highway chase/shootout brought back memories of the OJ chase, only much more serious. This is all just fucking crazy. Are you guys getting any of this coverage?

Thousands of people are streaming the police scanner feed and tweeting what they are hearing, likely putting the swat team and cops in danger, as the guy is holding a web-enabled phone in his hand.

I can't understand how he ever got off the highway. Dude was being chased by 30+ cop cars (my estimate) and he not only evaded them all, but jumped out of the car, ran to a nearby neighborhood, picked out a random house, kicked the door in and took hostages.
