View Full Version : Spartan Coaching Tree Grows
Baker 05-24-2007, 12:46 PM Former Michigan State standout guard Sam Vincent is the new coach of the Charlotte Bobcats. Scott Skiles is the other former Spartan to have a NBA coaching position. That makes 2 NBA head coaches and 5 NCAA former Spartan head coaches. Impressive.

As Vincent is a little Green. Not just Green & White. Someone sees something in him.
Jethro34 05-24-2007, 02:03 PM Good luck to him. He has plenty of scorers on that team, plus a draft that could get him some help inside and a true SG. If he gets that, and if they're defensive helpers as well, he should be able to improve on their 33 wins pretty dramatically.
Moodini31 05-24-2007, 11:46 PM He should trade back for BRJ if he wants to keep his job.

I met Shawn Respert yesterday at Egypt Valley CC. Seemed like a really nice guy. He's not at Rice anymore, he's working at the NBA league office as the, what he called, "head of player development". I'm not sure if that means NBDL or something else.
I also saw Ty Hallock, Mitch Lyons and the regular B list of MSU celebrities, as well as Steve Smith (it was his tournament).

Sweet, I miss that smooth Respert jumper. I had crazy respect and love for the guy and then I found out that he spent his short NBA career with Cancer and never told anybody because he didn't want it to be an excuse and didn't want to be treated differently. Don't know if I've got more respect for any former Spartan including all the greats.

Did they compliment you on your quality posting and ask you why you think Earl Watson is better than Tony Parker?
lol
Glenn 07-10-2007, 01:17 PM I'm not sure how they would know about my posting, except if Smith knows that I broke his retirement news two years ago a couple of months before any other media source, lol.
Glenn 07-10-2007, 03:45 PM Oh, and Barry Sanders was there yesterday too, but I didn't see him.

I met Barry, walked with him for about 20 minutes while he signed autographs, and carried his pads and helmet for him with Filly all the way to the Lions lockerroom once. Experience of a lifetime.
Zip Goshboots 07-10-2007, 04:11 PM Lloyd Carr's coaching tree is more like a weed.
Glenn 07-10-2007, 04:13 PM Maybe the Charlie Brown Xmas tree?

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Sam Vincent was fired by the Charlotte Bobcats on Saturday after just one season as coach.
The fourth-year franchise entered the season with hopes of making the playoffs for the first time, but went 32-50.
Part-owner Michael Jordan, who has the final say on all basketball decisions, took a gamble in hiring Vincent. He had never been an NBA head coach and had spent just one year in the league as an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks.
"The decision to remove Sam as head coach after just one season was difficult, but it was a decision that had to be made because my first obligation is to do what is in the best interest of our team," Jordan said in a news release announcing the decision. "The fans and the city of Charlotte deserve our best effort at building the Charlotte Bobcats into a winning franchise."
Vincent clearly suffered growing pains. He struggled to find a consistent rotation, constantly shuttling Raymond Felton between point guard and shooting guard. Vincent also angered players for questioning their effort and commitment in front of reporters.
While majority owner Bob Johnson gave Vincent a vote of confidence, Jordan was mum on the issue, saying he would decide on Vincent's fate after the season.
Charlotte finished with one fewer win than in 2006-07, despite acquiring Jason Richardson in a draft night trade and significantly increasing its payroll.
Vincent's ouster means Larry Brown could quickly become a candidate for the job. Brown and Jordan have a history from their ties to North Carolina, and Brown's mother lives in Charlotte.
The firing came shortly after the Charlotte Observer reported that according to a source close to Brown, the Hall of Fame coach would be willing to discuss the job with the Bobcats if it should become vacant.
The source, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject, said Brown had not been contacted by the Bobcats, the Observer reported.
Brown resigned as executive vice president of the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday. Brown's agent, Joe Glass, refused to discuss the Charlotte job Saturday, but said his client is eager to return to coaching.
"Larry is interested in getting back into coaching in the pros or college," Glass said.
Brown's first pro coaching job was with the Carolina Cougars of the ABA in 1972-74.
