Former Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy might be getting back into coaching in the NBA next season. It just won't be with the Indiana Pacers.

According to a published report, Van Gundy turned down the opportunity to coach the Pacers.

"It's true, I decided against it," Van Gundy told the Indianapolis Star. "The Pacers are a great organization. The best thing about the whole situation were the people. Larry [Bird], Donnie [Walsh] and [David] Morway are all great people."

Van Gundy is still under contract with the Heat until the end of the 2007-08 season.

The Pacers have interviewed several candidates, according to the paper, including Indiana assistants Johnny Davis and Chuck Person and Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw.

What an idiot. Who would pass up the decision to coach Mike Dunleavy Jr.?

Seriously, I can't see SVG wanting to be under an uppity legend again. I'd love to see SVG with Orlando, bulding up a cross-state rivalry.

The worst thing about the whole situation were the players, their contracts, and the fact that Larry Bird can't manage a team.

Well, let's be honest - Larry Bird isn't bad at running a team. He just had kind of a morality spasm and pulled the trigger on almost all of his good players.

No, he's honestly bad at running a team.

The "good" Pacer team was created by Donny Walsh. Bird has done almost nothing good (signing Jasikevicius, trading three years worth of 2nd rounders for a dude they cut before the season even started, trading a first rounder in this draft for a guy they trade away the very same season)

Ask Pacer fans. The guy spent most of the year two(?) seasons ago in Europe "scouting". He comes back and insists they sign Jasikevicius who hardly gets played by the coach Bird himself loved. This season was an abortion for the Pacers long before the trade happened. They spent the offseason trying to throw together a running team and resign a coach who prefers to play half-court ball and call all the plays rather then run. When they finally give up on the idea (only half a season into it) they trade for guys who are more suited for half court ball and then fire their half-court ball coach at the end of the season, who they just resigned.

The former 80's Celtics make terrible GMs. Its a crime there are so many of them running teams. All of which are bad.
