Jealous in PA - Yes Sir!
by Darlene Meyers
It’s Game 6, ten seconds left, the Pistons have the ball and the score is 95-85. I’m out of my chair, jumping in the living room and cheering for the Pistons. Game over! My Detroit Pistons are moving on to their fifth Conference finals.
By now, the entire neighborhood has heard the cheering and celebration and knows “my boys” won again. Since the game in Chicago, a lot of Pistons fans had to watch the game on TV, but for me, a grandmother living in south central Pennsylvania, this is how I enjoy most of the Piston games.
The annual ritual begins the moment the schedule is published for the season. I print two copies and post one at work and one at home. Then my schedule for the season is designed around the games that will be shown on TV.
I’ve always enjoyed watching basketball, but I became a Pistons fan as a result of wanting to have a common topic with many of the youth that I do volunteer work with. The more I watched the Pistons and learned of their work ethic, dedication, commitment and team play, they impressed me greatly. They became “my team” and I have mentioned them many times in my youth discussions.
I especially enjoy watching Rip Hamilton moving constantly on the court and making his shots. Knowing Rip and Rasheed both came from Pennsylvania made it perfect. I admire the talent of the entire team and the wisdom of Joe Dumars to put this group together. Over the years I have enjoyed watching the team play so much I have “unofficially” adopted them as my boys and proclaimed myself as “Team Mom.”
This year has been very special. I traveled to Washington, D.C., twice to watch the Pistons play the Wizards and to Philadelphia to cheer them on as they played the 76ers. But my true desire was to see my boys play in their Palace, and bought tickets to my first Pistons home game through Pistons.com.
In February I finally had my dream come true when I was at the Palace to see Ben Wallace return. To see the Palace for the first time was awesome. The folks were so friendly. They really want to make it a wonderful time for you. I was very honored to be given a tour of The Palace by Pistons.com’s own blogger, Dave Weime. He took time from his busy schedule to give me a tour and some history on the Palace. Along with the tour I had my face painted, hair colored and my picture taken with the championship trophies.
I will always remember walking out of the beautiful suites and seeing the court for the very first time. Then we worked our way down to the court and I was able to sit courtside and watch my boys warm up. My seat for the game was two rows behind the Pistons bench. The servers were great, and I truly felt like a princess in the Palace. It’s obvious to me that the entire staff at the Palace displays the same work ethic that the Pistons have. The Palace is awesome!
The excitement, the noise, the fans and the energy were addictive. As soon as I got home to Pennsylvania, I ordered a ticket for another game. This one was memorable, too - it was the Nuggets game when Sheed hit his unbelievable 62-footer to put the game into overtime. We went on to win - what a memory!
It is difficult living in Pennsylvania and being a Detroit fan but Pistons.com (which I visit a minimum of three times a day) keeps me up to date on the news. I enjoy reading all the blogs and was truly honored when asked to do a guest blog. The folks at the Palace continue to make me feel special and provide precious memories for me.
Looking forward, the Pistons and I have the same goal. I would love my next trip to the Palace to be for an NBA Finals game. When next season’s schedule comes out, I hope to add to my ritual by planning a few trips to The Palace for a few more home games. (Who knows, maybe I will even become a Crew member.)
For now, I’ll continue to sit in my living room, pretend I am at The Palace and remember the excellent times I have had there cheering for MY BOYS. As for those at the Palace enjoying the games - give me a wave and I’ll be watching back here in Pennsylvania.
Will I be jealous? Yes sir!
Darlene, are you here yet? If not, we need to find a way to invite Darlene. Maybe a Syndicate member could contact someone at Palace Sports and Entertainment to point her in our direction. She seems like she'd be a pretty cool poster to have around.
