Concert of Colors adds to lineup (http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070505/ENT04/705050314)

The 15th annual Concert of Colors will expand to four days from three and feature a performance of a Detroit Symphony Orchestra-commissioned tribute to Rosa Parks.
For the second year in a row, the free multicultural music festival will be held at the Max M. Fisher Music Center, home of the DSO. The fest moved full time to the Max last year after a long run at the Chene Park Amphitheatre on Detroit's riverfront.

Running from July 19-22, the Concert of Colors will include an opening-day community, culture & race forum, which last year drew representatives from more than 100 local arts organizations. That will be followed by the DSO's performance of "Dear Mrs. Parks," a 57-minute orchestral piece with choir. The tribute to the civil rights icon was composed by Grammy-winner Hannibal Lokumbe on commission from the DSO.
The festival typically features dozens of musical acts from all over the world in a wide range of styles. The full lineup will be released May 23.
The Concert of Colors is produced in partnership by ACCESS/Arab American National Museum and New Detroit Inc. and its Cultural Exchange Network, along with the DSO. This year's lead sponsor is DaimlerChrysler.

DSO's ambitious 8 Days in June will feature everything from chamber and orchestral works to Chuck D and Wynton Marsalis

When the Max M. Fisher Music Center opened in 2003, Detroit Symphony Orchestra leaders promised that more ambitious artistic programming, including thematic festivals, would soon follow.
But while the DSO did expand its jazz, world music, spoken word and other populist offerings, classical programming remained stuck in neutral, and the vow to produce festivals evaporated like an unfulfilled New Year's resolution.
Nearly four years later, the DSO is making good on its pledge.
The orchestra will launch 8 Days in June, an ambitious festival June 21-28 featuring orchestral concerts, jazz, chamber music, solo piano, spoken word and panel discussions at Orchestra Hall and the smaller Music Box recital hall at the Max. Tied to the theme "Creation in Conflict," the festival's 11 events will explore music arising from troubled times, interpersonal conflict or periods of intense artistic ferment.

WTFchris 06-12-2007, 03:56 PM SPORTS RADIO 1130 WDFN'S 5TH ANNUAL MEATA
Friday, August 3
GET FREE FOOD, TEST THE SPEED OF YOUR FASTBALL, VOTE FOR THE BEST FOOD IN DETROIT AND DUNK SEAN BALIGIAN
Sports Radio 1130 WDFN is hosting the 5th annual MEATA, Men Eating All The Animals; a celebration of men eating meat! Midday host Sean Baligian will be broadcasting live from The Compuware Sports Arena in Plymouth on Friday, August 3rd from 9am to noon and hanging out afterward to celebrate eating meat! Listeners are invited to bring meat and wild game of any kind as we light up the grills bright and early. We’ll be grilling every piece of meat we can get our hands on from the common hamburger to venison and other exotic meats. Plus we're asking people to bring a canned good for the Oakland County Food Bank so we can help feed those that are less fortunate. Also, this year is the Inaugural "WDFN's Best of 2007" Competition and we're inviting every restaurant, deli, burger shack, etc. in town who specializes in one of 5 categories to come out and put their product up against the best in town to be voted on. The 5 categories include burgers, wings, sandwiches/wraps, pizza and coney dogs. Everybody who comes out will have the opportunity to vote on the Best of each category and the winners of each category will be celebrated on WDFN's website as "WDFN's Best of 2007." If you're interested in entering your restaurant into the competition for a nominal fee, please contact Elliot Lerner at elliotlerner@clearchannel.com for more information. If that's not enough, you'll have an opportunity to submerge Sean Baligian in a dunk tank for the chance to win baseball tickets and other great prizes. Plus, organize a game of hoops with PickUpHoops (http://www.pickup-hoops.net/), a patented portable basketball goal assembly that mounts in the bed of a pickup truck, or test your fastball with a fast pitch machine courtesy of Milt Wilcox (not scheduled to appear). As a big proponent of red-blooded foods, self-proclaimed carnivore Sean Baligian started up the concept of MEATA in response to the world-wide animal rights organization PETA-People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the feedback has being overwhelming. Stop by the Compuware Sports Arena on your lunch break for some FREE grub or take the day of entirely and spend it with Sean and the whole crew of meatlovers from WDFN. Show up hungry and leave absolutely stuffed! Brought to you by Ball Park (http://ballparkfranks.com/), Hillshire Farm (http://hillshirefarm.com/), Compuware Sports Arena and Sports Radio 1130 WDFN. WTFchris 06-12-2007, 04:17 PM I think we need some people there handing out WTFdetroit flyers or something. Or at least find a way to get a banner hung about the site.
Glenn 06-12-2007, 04:21 PM They tried selling us a sponsorship last year, I can't remember the price.
Maybe we should take up a collection, lol.
