View Full Version : John Bielein on with The Big Show 4.17 theMUHMEshow 04-17-2007, 11:32 AM http://1270sports.com/pages/115415.php?contentType=34&contentId=1466 There ya go Jethro34 04-17-2007, 05:10 PM Some interesting things there. First, you get the feeling that he's into the media. He enjoys talking about the program and knows how to handle the media. That's something Tommy never had. Next, he is so into this team. You would assume that, but to hear him you know that he's absolutely going to make an impact on the lives of the kids that play for him. Even the kids that don't - to hear him talking about making some phone calls for Reed Baker to other programs telling them how good of a kid he is and what his ability level is. Things like that will eventually make their way around now that he's in a Big Ten gig and players will know he's looking out for them. Again, that's pretty common for coaches, but not always necessarily true. Finally, I'm unsure what my reaction is to this just yet, but he talked about recruiting. He said he was a slow recruiter. He takes time to make sure a kid is a team guy and a good program fit. He was careful to make sure people didn't assume he was saying Legion was not that. But he said they wouldn't fill any scholarship vacancies just for the purpose of getting bodies in there. If there aren't good fits in one class, you hold onto those scholarships to give you more options for subsequent classes. He also talked about worldwide recruiting - how he has had success in Europe before and is willing to look there again, because the school has the ability to draw kids on a global level, and now he thinks the basketball program can as well. Zip Goshboots 04-17-2007, 10:22 PM I wonder if Belein has discovered the wealth of basketball talent in New Guinea? FillyCheezeSteak 04-17-2007, 11:16 PM Well Zip, in case he hasn't yet why don't you go there for the next year or two, scope it out and then report back to us in 2009. Look forward to hearing from ya then. Have a good one. Zip Goshboots 04-18-2007, 12:56 AM New Guinea is not in my territory. |
