I think this deal's about perfect. Guillen deserved to be rewarded, and I was afraid he was going to hold us hostage for more years or an outrageous dollar amount. 4 Years should be about the end of his good years.

Guillen and Tigers agree to $48 million, 4-year extension
March 30, 2007

DETROIT (AP) -- Shortstop Carlos Guillen and the Detroit Tigers agreed Friday to a $48 million, four-year contract extension through the 2011 season. Guillen is making $5 million this season, the last of a $14 million, three-year deal. He hit .320 last year with 19 homers, 85 RBIs, 41 doubles and 100 runs scored. Detroit acquired Guillen from Seattle in 2004. He has a .320 batting average with 44 homers and 205 RBIs with the Tigers.

This is nice.

How much did Michael Young get again?

This is a steal IMO.

Considering the deals that Young and Lugo signed, Guillen might have fetched $15 or $16 million per year on the open market. 4/48 is a great deal for the Tigers.

So who is left?
Bonderman resigned, Guillen, Inge - I think. I think Ordonez has a few more years, Sheffield got the extension when he got here. We don't have to worry about the young guys like Verlander, Granderson, Zumaya for a while.
Rogers, Jones, etc have one year left and then who knows - others should be ready to step in at that point.

The biggest question for me is Pudge and Polanco. How much is left on their contracts? We've got no one behind Pudge (ok, Vance, but he's only one year younger and not an everyday guy) and it's questionable behind Polanco. Infante is the closest we have and there are some guys in the minors that could be ready in 2-3 years, but I would like to see Polanco with us through 2009 at least.

Polanco is signed through the 2009 season... (18.4 million over 4 years signed in August of 2005)

We have an option on Pudge after this year that we can pick up paying him 13 million for the 2008 season....
