The University of Utah will hire Michigan State assistant Jim Boylen as men's basketball coach, Spartans head coach Tom Izzo confirmed to ESPN.com's Andy Katz.

The move was first reported by the Salt Lake Tribune.

It's unclear when an announcement will come, but sources told the Tribune an introductory press conference is expected Tuesday or Wednesday.

Boylen interviewed for the job last week. Other candidates known to have interviewed for the for the job were Kent State's Jim Christian and Westminster College's Tommy Connor, but there were believed to be up to five serious candidates.

Great hire by Utah. I could definitely see Jim Boylen being a major candidate for a real school in about 2 or 3 years. This will be a great experience for him and he'll get a ton of cred for coaching those boys out there. I expect to see them in the tourney.

Damn it! That just sucks. Speaks volumes about the program when 5-6 assistants have head coaching jobs now. But at the same time, this is getting ridiculous. It is really tough on a program when every other year you are replacing your head assistant.

I really thought the guy from Westminster College was going to get the job.

Stiff competition, I tell ya.

Michigan State's "stuff" was just great this year and much of it was due to Boylen. He put in so many offensive sets and plays and their offense was very effective for having 1-2 scorers. You put 4-5 scorers on a team with Boylen and you've got one helluva offense. It sucks that they'll lose him and his ability to help the post players.

You put 4 or 5 scorers on any team and they'll have a great offense. I'm not dissing Boylen either. For a cat to come from the NBA after working with Hakeem, and to be as involved in recruiting as he was, it's lucky you kept him as long as you did.

He had a lot to do with the progress of Suton in the low post. His drop step is coming along nice as is use of the glass in exactly the spots he needs to use it. If Suron makes the Bigs like I think he will he'll owe Boylen.

I guess I should have explained better. 4 or 5 guys that have a decent shot or can penetrate a little. I'm not talking about adding a Shannon Brown, an Ager, and a Dion Harris. I'm just saying you give the offense a couple of decent offensive players in addition to the 1-2 legit guys they have and it would be an explosive offense. Basically the situation they'll have next year.

Any early talk of who will take his spot?

Too soon, Izzo will probably work on a possible list in the next few days.

Garland is the common and obvious name.

Rumor has it that Mike Garland (Cleveland State coach and former MSU assistant) is walking around campus and met with Izzo and Montgomery today. They were meeting in the Berkowitz Complex discussing paperwork and film. This would be an A+ assistant for MSU! Expect news shortly this week I've heard.

I listened to Garland speak a couple of years ago and I was WAY impressed. Very excited about this news.

Michigan State men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo has hired Mike Garland as his newest assistant, filling the spot left open by the departure of Jim Boylen, the new head coach at the University of Utah.Garland served as an assistant on Izzo’s staff for seven seasons before taking the head-coaching position at Cleveland State from 2003-06. Garland was most recently an assistant under Matt Doherty at Southern Methodist.

“It wasn’t a tough decision,” said Izzo, who played basketball with Garland at Northern Michigan. “He’s been my guy for 25 years, so why change now?”

Izzo also promoted assistant Mark Montgomery to associate head coach and promoted assistant Dwayne Stephens.
