Tubby Smith will leave Kentucky to take over the head coaching job at Minnesota, multiple sources told ESPN.com's Andy Katz.
Smith had four year remaining on his Kentucky contract.
Smith met with Kentucky players and Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart. Smith is expected to fly to Minnesota later Thursday afternoon.
Smith called former Minnesota coach Dan Monson early Thursday and told him he was accepting the job. Minnesota is expected to pay Smith $1.8 million per year.

Now it gets interesting.
What will Iowa do? Will they look to Omaha, and Creighton University coach Dana Altman?
Altman does more in the Missouri Valley with less than anyone. Creighton is a small, private Jesuit school. Altman has no business winning the Missouri Valley conference and going to the NCAA Tourney 7 of the last 9 years. Altman covets the Iowa job. He would make that his last stop.
I don't think they go for a huge name, I think they'll look long and hard at Altman or Lowery of SIU.
Where does that leave Meeechigan?

LOL... ESPN notes that Tom Izzo is amongst a list of "candidates" for the vacant job. Are we going to need to re-establish the "DrTre11 Suicide Watch" again?

Good for Smith. And fuck those Kentucky fans who were calling for his ouster. Tubby got in the last laugh. Now he's getting 1.8 million somewhere where he'll be appreciated.

I'll predict Crean to UK

Glenn:
That's a good call, but I think that Krueger will get a serious look as well. Other than that? I don't know. Kentucky basketball and Alabama football fans go together. Lots of pressure there.

Dr Tre watched Tom Izzos coaching DVD and said he wasnt that good...sort of overrated and not impressive. Weird?

I know it's not going to happen, but this is Tre if T to the Izzo bolts for the bluegrass.

I think you're a joke. You give me crap for an opinion that will get a rise out of Michigan fans, however I've NEVER ONCE heard you give a Spartan, a future Spartan, or anything MSU props once. You're the most blind fan here. I wonder if the "much improved Petway" would have been looked at that way had he been in green? lol joker

Good God! This has to be the 20th suicide post. What the hell is wrong with you? And why are you so obsessed w/ me?

If we need a watch for anybody it would probably be a fan of a sports program on life support. Big game chokers w/ an out of date coach, another program with no coach whatsoever coming off 10 years of NIT, etc. Give me a break...DocTre is as happy and optimistic as ever.

Izzo going to Kentucky is a pipe dream by the Kentucky faithful.

That job ain't what it used to be, and even if Izzy was interested (which he is obviously not) I bet he would get on the phone with Tubby and find out all that he would need to know to turn them down.

The ONLY option for Izzo other than MSU is the NBA, IMO.

He'll be the guy. Perfect fit. Mercenary dude for a mercenary program.

I have to say I'm very surprised he went to Minnesota of all places. I can see wanting to get out of Kentucky. Nothing but the championship is good enough every year, and that's a tough place to coach, but Minnesota. I'm near the top of Michigan haters (and fully and proudly admit it), but if I were a coach, I'd go there over Minnesota in a second. That has a name value that can help attract some prospects. Tubby seems like a great coach and a smart guy, so let's see if he can turn them around. I'm rooting for him 'cause it'd be one more team to beat up on Michigan every year. : )

No way Michigan even comes close to paying $1.8m/yr for a basketball coach, I'm guessing that Tubby knows this.

I heard a rumor that Bill Martin freaked out when he heard about Tubby being offered by Minny and he made a counter offer in hopes of luring him here, but Minny came back over the top with their final offer...........

Any truth MUHME or Art?

You are completely right and I honestly don't believe that my opinion stems from being a green and white die hard. MSU's program has been better over the last decade than Kentucky's. MSU will have a top 10 team next year with Top 5 talent coming in. Kentucky's team is garbage right now. The only thing Kentucky has on MSU is history and that's it. Izzo wouldn't dream of leaving for UK. Maybe had they offered in his first few seasons. Not now. Not to mention the fact that MSU has beaten UK TWICE to go to the Final 4 over the last 8 years.

According to sources, Marquette coach Tom Crean, Michigan State's Tom Izzo, Memphis coach John Calipari, Gonzaga's Mark Few, Notre Dame's Mike Brey, Texas' Rick Barnes, Texas A&M's Billy Gillispie and Villanova's Jay Wright are expected to be candidates for what is one of the few premier jobs in men's college basketball.

See. Tre?

Thanks Tre. I'm going to check on my car now, it's in the garage, the door is closed, and the motor's been running for about 35 minutes. Should be ready.

I think we all read that article, but I agree with Tre, no way Izzo leaves State for UK. At very best, it's a lateral step currently, and don't see him leaving MSU for anywhere but the pros (not that I'd advise he do that either). I think it's a pretty perfect fit for now. Crean I could see however.

Denny I'm sorry, but I really do believe you are retarded. I disagree with lots of UMers here, but at least I can respect them and we can have good arguments back and forth. But, I don't respect anything you say because it's just crap. You post an article that lists Izzo as one of UK's choices. No shit he's somebody they would want. Who wouldn't want him? Just because UK says they want him, doesn't mean he'd even come close to considering it. If they put Phil Jackson on their list are you going to start chirping at the Laker fans about how Phil is leaving?

Change your Pampers, Tre. Have you ever thought, just for a moment, that I do what I do because I know EXACTLY how you're going to react?

Of course UK has no shot at Izzo. I find it hilarious how ESPN automatically shoots off some big names who MIGHT see the light of coaching such a storied program.... like Michigan State has no history.

For future reference, the standard response to a DennyMcLain post goes as follows:

Fuck you

You can save your sermons for Moodini. A simple flip off shall suffice.

That being said, coaches ALL have these little old GIGANTIC things called "ego".
They seem to revel in new challenges. In thinking THEY are the one who cn take on this new dragon and slay it.
You know there will be a phone call or two, a text or two, a fax or two.
There will be some talking, some listening, maybe a few, "Weelllll, let's just say, strictly on the hypothettical, that if I might be a little interested, Mr Kentucky AD..."

If Ashley Judd is sent to Michigan to deliver a "special" rim job....

Believe me, if there were ever a chance to get Izzo to leave State, I would be all over it.

He's not going anywhere. There's about a .03725% chance he ever leaves MSU. If he ever goes, it will be when the planets align on an NBA job. He WILL win another ring at State before he goes anywhere.

Coming from a Michigan fan, you can put that in the bank. (Remember, my bank is different from the one that put a downpayment on Ronald Johnson in Ann Arbor)
