View Full Version : 1995 Oscar for Best Picture - Redux
Glenn 03-15-2007, 03:05 PM I heard Josh Elliot talking about this topic/debate yesterday on the radio, and I thought it might make for an interesting discussion.
There were 5 nominees:
Forrest Gump
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Pulp Fiction
Quiz Show
The Shawshank Redemption
For those that don't remember, don't care or don't want to know yet, I won't tell you which film won (you can look it up if you want to, somebody will probably spoil it later in the thread) but if you had to choose one today, which would you pick and why?
Zip Goshboots 03-15-2007, 03:17 PM Shawshank. I'm as much a Liberal Democrat as has ever existed, but the thought of Tim Robbins being raped for twenty years is too much to ignore when considering this award.
Now, if I actually go with the best movie, the one I liked the most: Pulp Fucking Fiction, baby, hands down.
The best dialogue in a movie I have ever seen. Every line is a classic.
My favorite: "I'm a motherfucking mushroom cloud laying motherfucker motherfucker".
Zip Goshboots 03-15-2007, 03:22 PM Glenn: Don't tell me you bought into that sappy piece of shit Forrest Dump.
WTFchris 03-15-2007, 03:25 PM I voted for it. My favorite is Pulp Fiction (only one of those I own). However, I think Forrest Gump should have won it.
Shashank was good but that fact that it's on TV a billion times makes me not want to vote for it. Sue me.
Glenn 03-15-2007, 03:26 PM I'm a Shawshank guy, too.
I though FG was hokie, I have never understood the appeal of Pulp Fiction (actually I don't like most Tarantino flicks other than Reservoir Dogs), 4 Weddings is for chicks and is British (translation: I've never seen it, but it can't be worthy) and Quiz Show moved too slowly for me.
Shawshank is nearly a perfect movie IMO. Everytime I stumble accross it on TBS/TNT (which is quite often) I get hooked.
Zip Goshboots 03-15-2007, 03:30 PM Gump was crap.
Shawshank is a movie that is watchable no matter how many times I've seen it, Glenn. It's a great movie.
Oddly, Pulp Fiction is the ONLY Tarrantino movie I like. It was his best, his inspired moment, and the rest have come up so far short of it I almost cry that he had only one good movie in him and seems to feel compelled to do nothing but go for shock value in trying to outdo Fiction.
WTFchris 03-15-2007, 03:34 PM Dusk till Dawn was moderately entertaining. I don't like any other Quintin movies either.
Zip Goshboots 03-15-2007, 03:41 PM Who the hell is Josh Elliot? Is he another ESPN dope? Another Tony Kornheiser/Colin Cowherd wannabe?
Glenn 03-15-2007, 03:44 PM He was sitting in for the afternoon host (Seibel?) yesterday.
He used to be a writer for SI, now he's with ESPN (TV & Radio).
Seems to fancy himself a bit like Bob Costas IMO.
In trying to find out some more info on Elliott, I came across this site: http://www.prphotodesk.com/cgi-bin/I...imageFolio.cgi
Some great John Saunders pics there that I might save for future reference.
Zip Goshboots 03-15-2007, 03:53 PM I can't get into that link.
Hermy 03-15-2007, 03:56 PM Pulp Fiction with its arm tied behind its back AND tim Robbins fucking it in the ass. I thought SSR was a yawner, as was QS. I liked Gump but like I like Rudolph or reruns of Growing Pains. Touching and funny, but not epic. 4waaf being included is like if Don Nickels got teamed with the rat pack.
Glenn 03-15-2007, 03:58 PM I can't get into that link.

Zip Goshboots 03-15-2007, 03:58 PM Hermy:
I agree. Now, come back with your Epic 1000th post so I can say I was there.
Zip Goshboots 03-15-2007, 04:01 PM Thanks Glenn.
And back on track, what thinketh you all about John Revolta getting nominated for the Best Lead Oscar, and Jackson getting snubbed?
Uncle Mxy 03-15-2007, 05:07 PM As my favorite auto mechanic, Mona Lisa Vito, might say about this poll: It's a TRICK QUESTION! The Academy didn't give awards to these movies till '95. Some of these movies didn't even come out until after the Academy Awards ceremony in '94.
Having said that, I'd give it to Shawshank in a heartbeat.
"The same size, and model tire."

Well, let's not start suckin' each other's dicks quite yet.
-the wolf.
Zip Goshboots 03-15-2007, 06:04 PM Man, THAT is the best line in movies EVER.
For your Epic 1000th post, a home run.
b-diddy 03-15-2007, 06:12 PM i got so into ssr the first time i saw it i damn near let my house burn down due to me negligently forgetting that i had left the stove on and in a bad situation. no fire, but when the movie ended, i noticed there was quite a bit of smoke on in the kitchen (which was the next room over). now THATS a sign of a good movie.
gump was the obvious choice for the win. (is that the beens?).
if i had to suggest one movie from the group, though, it would be pulp. the other two are great and all, but theyre more or less better versions of movies that are all over the place. pulp is something else.
Hermy 03-15-2007, 06:21 PM Man, THAT is the best line in movies EVER.
For your Epic 1000th post, a home run.
Well, I guess you can start sucking my dick then. All set.
Zip Goshboots 03-15-2007, 06:57 PM Sorry, you didn't invent the line, you merely quoted it. Do you often petition men for sex, or are you just bowled over by my intelligence and humor?
Uncle Mxy 03-16-2007, 09:33 AM To pay a little attention to some of the other movies under consideration:
- I've loved most everything Richard Curtis has written since Four Weddings And A Funeral. He's good at "feel good" that's thoughtful and fun for a dude and a chick to go see, which is a feat.
- The Last Seduction came out the same year, but there was controversy as it was an HBO movie and shown on TV first <gasp> instead of a movie theater. I would've put that in the category for best movie ahead of Quiz Show.
Glenn 03-16-2007, 09:38 AM As my favorite auto mechanic, Mona Lisa Vito, might say about this poll: It's a TRICK QUESTION! The Academy didn't give awards to these movies till '95. Some of these movies didn't even come out until after the Academy Awards ceremony in '94.
My mistake, these are the 1995 nominees, not 1994.
Nice catch Mxy, I fixed the thread title.
Darth Thanatos 03-16-2007, 05:15 PM I pretty much agree with what b-diddy said.
And I liked most of QT's movies. Digged Reservoir Dogs, PF, and the Kill Bills.
giffman 03-16-2007, 08:55 PM I got nothing new to add. But, then again, that's never stopped me before.
Pulp Fiction and Shawshank are both, IMO, head and shoulders above the others.
And I ain't talkin' dandruff.
