Why would you say this is the biggest week of the year? You know this whole thing goes all the way until April. Do you stop watching after one week or do the games lose luster after the first week?

Anyways, back to the NIT talk for now...........

J/K

I say this is the best week because of the number of games this week. You'll never have an opportunity to watch more bball than you'll have Thur. - Sunday. The bigger games do occur later, but Thursday through Sunday is an absolute basketball buffet and sometimes that is when you see the most upsets.

I was reading an indepth (to put it lightly) scouting report on Marquette today. I follow them throughout the year because of Crean, but I had forgotten that just weeks ago they were a Top 15 team. They actually reached #12. They lost 3 in a row, but those losses were to Georgetown, Pitt., and a buzzer beater by Louisville!

Damn, talk about a tough draw as a 8 seed.

WTFchris

Another seed that grinds my gears is Duke. 8-8 in their conference, a 1st round loss to a non-tourney team, and they get a 6th seed? BAH! The seeds this year suck.

So who's everyone sleeper picks? Frauds? Cinderella?

Sleepers - UNLV(athletic ability), Oregon(yes, i know they're a 3 seed), Texas(final four pick)

Frauds - High seeded mid-majors and the Big Ten. When mid majors are seeded high, they're usually done in the 1st or 2nd round because they run into a good mid-major in the 1st, and an above average BCS team in the 2nd.

The only great team in the Big Ten is OSU. The rest are unathletic, no good bigs(except maybe Landry) can't shoot, and/or depend on one person. I think Wisconsin, Indy, and MSU will all be gone by the sweet 16, if they even make it that far.

Wow, this Marquette team is waaaay better than you are giving them credit for Filly. They do have one of their best players hurt, but there is no way MSU blows this team out. Especially with the way Crean knows MSU and what they want to do.

MSU doesn't score 69 points against some bad teams, it's just not their style. I don't see them scoring that many here. I'll take a one point win if they can get it. This one is a tough draw.

Even though one of their leaders is down (McSomethingorother) Domenic James, a kid Izzo wanted badly, is a fierce competitor and he will DOG Drew. This team was 10-6, while being streaky in the Big East. Wes Matthews' kid is a nice player too. MSU's bigs are bigger but Marquettes' are more consistent. All but one shoot it from 3. Crean's kids are 4-4 against top 25 and 6-6 against top 50. MSU is a 1,5 favorite. I think this is a bad number. I hate to piss on a parade I think is about to end but Marquette 61- MSU 57. It's been a hell of a run for some guys who, pre-season, were slotted for the NIT if lucky.

:mccosky:

Don't know if you are much interested in this, but, you know the kid at North Carolina, Tyler Hansbrough? The kid who got his nose busted by Gerald Henderson. Well, UNC has called the Pistons to get the name of the company that made Rip Hamilton's mask. Apparently they are going to have them develop a mask for him to wear in the tournament. The one he wore in the ACC tourney was uncomfortable. So, if he starts to shoot the ball like Rip suddenly, you'll know why. The power is in the mask.

By the way, I am one of only two people in America that could give a toss about the NCAA tourney. Me and Pistons stat man Joe Abramson are the only guys not filling out our brackets as we speak. The way we look at it, we have never made a wrong pick. Never in, never out. Look, I am not trying to be smug. I covered three NCAA Final Fours, covered Michigan's title run in 1989, covered college basketball for a long time. But I can't watch it now. It's like watching a youth soccer game (only with less scoring -- just kidding). Take away the atmosphere, the rowdy fans, the cheerleaders and Dick Vitale and just try to focus on the game -- it's brutal.

When I covered it, the best players stayed in school for at least three years. Now, the best players don't go to school at all, and the few that do, leave after a year or two. What you are watching is a glorified intramural game most of the time. But that's just me. I have been spoiled by the NBA, there's no doubt about that. Enjoy your madness. I have plenty of my own to tend to.

McClueless does make a good point. Now final four teams are led by freshman phenom's, not by a group of 2-3 seniors that have been fighting for a chance at a title for years. Much different story lines. I prefer the old way, but don't find it any less exciting. It's just hard to root against or for teams (besides your bracket) because you don't know most of the players anymore.

Nope, Walton committed first. Even had it been the other way around, it would have happened because Izzo talked to James about the situation. Comproni wrote a huge article about this very topic this week. He said that last year it looked like Izzo made a huge mistake choosing Walton and letting James know he liked him but didn't have room, but now it looks like Walton might be a championship piece of the future as a defender and amazing leader.

I went with Florida based on sheer talent alone (and their path isn't horrible).

They are sitting there with 3 NBA lottery picks and a squad that already won it all last year, which should give them a primo chance to repeat.

I'm not sold on the Big Ten at all, including Ohio State. As soon as Oden runs into foul trouble, especially early, I think OSU is screwed.

Acie Law says no. Wow, he is good. I'm trying to figure out a comparison for him. He's a lot like Billups or Baron Davis in the way he can go to the rim and finish hard shots. But, he's more relentless on offense than Billups. Somewhat like Kidd is in that he's always around the ball for rebounds too. He doesn't have the post up game of Davis or Billups because he doesn't have the muscle they do. But his ball handling skills are very good. he is a straight ahead dribbler (not a cross over guy like Marbury, AI, etc). Please be there when we pick.

Wow, I would absolutely hate to face Izzo and his staff in the NCAA tourney. First of all, I believe Izzo has moved into #2 tournament winning percentage. On top of that, they come out and run about 37 different sets tonight and every one of them seemed to work. They combine that with stellar defense and Marquette's boys looked like the students and the Spartans were the teachers.

I see now why Izzo wanted Walton instead of James. James got 18 or so but most of them were garbage 30 footers trying to comeback and it took him a ton of shots to get it. Don't get me wrong, I'd take James. But, Walton locked this kid down. I think he scored twice with Walton on him.

Right you were senor. Props given to ZG on the "other" board from mois`.

Tre I dug this up from CBS Sportsline (I think).
Last season, some Michigan State fans questioned a decision made in the summer of 2004 by Izzo and his staff to accept a commitment from point guard Travis Walton instead of waiting for Dominic James.

While Walton averaged about 19 minutes and 1.8 points as a freshman, James was voted the Big East Rookie of the Year and was generally regarded as one of the top young point guards in the country.

Thursday night, Izzo's decision to take Walton over James was put to the test in the NCAA tournament, and it ended up looking like a stroke of genius.

The BT will have a down year once in awhile like last year (every conference is like that). But, if I'm picking a conference to do well in the tourney it's going to be the BT and probably the ACC. The Big Ten style of basketball just works in the tourney. You get into half court games and the BT style takes over with physical defense and rebounding to back it up.

I have in front of me, in my currently nicotine stained hands, a copy of a memo detailing some rule changes instituted for the NCAA Tournament. Some of them are doozies:

Timeouts: Each team gets 300 time outs in each half, and somehow, no matter how many they use, will end up with 125 time outs for the last two minutes of the game.

Time outs are going to be 15 minutes long

TV timeouts are increaded to 250 during each half, and will be 30 minutes long

Terribly boring stories, such as ones about Nebraska coaches who have babies and then coach a game on the same day are to increase exponentially as the tournament wears on

I hope you guys find this post informative, now enjoy the rest of the tournament!

the refs didnt cost them the game. fouls killed state. but that wasnt the refs, it was states inferior athletes getting rundown by a whole bunch of bluechippers. they didnt have a choice but to foul.

big ten represented this weekend. 2nd round was disapointing, but all the teams hung tough despite a general lack of talent.

Can somebody please tell me that Greg Oden ISN'T the most overhyped player in years... so i can shoot you.

Dude was a no-show ALL GAME (yes yes, thanks to foul trouble, I know). But I said it to my buddy near the end. I said, "Watch. Oden will find some way to pull a Dr. Funk out of that 35 year old beard of his." Sure enough, he swats the final shot, which wouldn't have counted anyhow, and Bill Raffrety is literally creaming in his DependsĀ® about how dominate Oden is.

FUCK OSU!!! You heard it here first -- Memphis will win by 18, becuase Memphis will NOT let THE Ohio State University back in the game the way the Vols did.

Zip Goshboots
03-23-2007, 01:31 AM
Oden doesn't know how to use his feet, or his body. He has no technique for blocking shots, and can't create his own shot. No dropstep, no quick spin, and he seems a bit slow on the reflexes.
I think when he is in the NBA next year, those guys are going to be blowing by him at the speed of light, beard and all.

I can tell you this. I wouldn't write the check for $37M that this guy will command as the #1 pick. In addition to his physical shortcomings and inexperience he looks like he'd rather be playing video games. He owns 6,000 DVD's but then Ohio State always did pay well. If OSU pulls another rabbit out their ass with Memphis Mr. Oden meets the 7'-2" Mr. Hibbert so he can pick on someone his own size. I like G-Town.

I would totally draft Durant over Oden and have felt that way for a while now, not just based on last night.

WTFchris
03-23-2007, 10:12 AM
I still think Oden will be the better player in the long run (based on him being a center). But Durant is far better right now. Oden is actually pretty quick to get to shots on help defense. The problem is just his timing. He sticks his arms out to block on every shot and sometimes you don't have a clear block. That's why he gets in foul trouble. Sometimes you don't have a godo block chance. On offense he needs work learning moves for sure. He's used to being so much bigger than people that he doesn't know many moves.

Still, his head is in the right place so I think he'll soak up advice from big men real fast. I think Durant will be the better player for 2-3 years though. Would you rather have a 6-10 Tmac or a 7 foot Elton Brand? Right now you're getting a young Tmac or an Eddie Curry maybe so the choice is easy now. But when Oden becomes the best or 2nd best true center in the game (when Shaq is gone), you might change your mind.

WTFchris
03-23-2007, 10:15 AM
And yes, he is overhyped by a lot. But I still think he deserves to be a top 2 pick. He's like Darko though in that just because he has that potential doesn't mean he should be that hyped. He isn't the sure thing that Lebron was and Durant is.

Read this, pulled from ESPN.com's recap of the game:

...from the records because of NCAA violations, making their last official appearance in 1968.

Mike Conley Jr. -- the son of a former Olympic star and Oden's high school teammate -- set the pace for the Buckeyes with hard-charging drives. He scored 19 points and led Ohio State to its second-highest scoring game of the season. He also was named the top player in the region.

You guys probably won't believe this, but I picked 2 brackets in my pool at school. On mine, I picked Durant to pull a Carmelo and lead the 'Horns to the title, but that fizzled. I wasn't too confident in that, so I picked a "backup bracket" under my fiancee's name and I had Florida, UCLA, Georgetown, and Ohio State in the Final Four.

I (she) picked Florida to beat OSU in the "rematch" for the title.

I'm interested to hear what other guys did as well. Maybe a few of you watched all the DVR's of the Oprha shows you tape while at work? maybe a Home & Garden Television marathon?
Possibly a few of you spent the weekend at a quilting bee, or an Antiques Road Show flea market?
And I wouldn't be surprised to hear that more than a few took the time to submit more than a dozen remakes of the Mock Draft, or spent the hours contemplating possible trades for the Lions to make with that #2 draft pick.
Meanwhile, there was some great basketball played in the Tourney, and I would think a supposed "sports forum" would be populated with members who have some thoughts about it, that's all.
Carry on, I hear that this Saturday there will be a "Matlock" marathon on TBS!

Who would want this job?
As soon as you get it, it becomes a "death watch", where the most frequent questions are about when you're gonna retire or move on.
You have to keep a direct line to the police department so you're there when you have to get up at 2:00AM to go bail out another one of your players.
If you haven't won a championship within ten minutes, your wife and children may be kidnapped and killed.
You got players with "posses", players who think they are all rap stars, and boosters and other assorted ne'er do wells stuffing dollar bills into their jockstraps.
You're expected to force kids who have no desire to even open a book go to class and get some decent grades.
You are surrounded by more drugs than are typically found in Barry Bonds' locker.
Your players have a collection of weapons that would make the Chinese Red Army jealous.
You probably have to constantly listen to rap music. Not just the shit your would be rap star players make, but all the other shit that is out on the public airwaves (I guess Pete Carroll likes it though. He listens to it when he rolls with the West Coasters and whacks the East Coasters)
You have to make love to everything ESPN or CBS.
This seems to be the world of the typical college basketball coach.
The ONE thing I will NEVER figure out is why a guy like Donovan, who has built Florida up from nothing and stands on the brink of a second consecutive national championship would even consider leaving that job for Kentucky, or especially the NBA.
Take your college problems and mulitply them by 34 million, and that's life in the NBA. CRAZY!
C'mon, Billy. Settle in at Florida and enjoy the ride and retire at 45.

He's always going to be second fiddle to the football program at Florida (just like Bruce Pearl is going to be 3rd at Tennessee).

Add to that the fact that despite winning the national title last year and returning basically the whole team, that they still apparently had tons of empty seats in their small arena all season long this year.

That's enough to get him listening to offers, I would think.

Zip Goshboots
03-28-2007, 04:10 PM
I guess, there could be any reason if you look hard enough.
Second fiddle ain't bad for a couple mill, though.
I like the Bruce Pearl thing. Alot of people buy into the Tennessee women's coach as being bigger than men's basketball.
Either Tennesse is full of lesbians, or Pearl would replace the women's basketball coach as #2 behind football in a heartbeat.
I don't, for one second, buy into ANY argument telling me women's sports is even remotely interesting to ANY "typical" sports fan.
Back to Donovan: I still don't get it. I suppose these guys have immense egos that need some stroking. Need a challenge.
