Report: Dolphins' Porter, Bengals' Jones in altercation

ESPN.com news services

Former Pittsburgh Steelers standout and current Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter was cited by Las Vegas police for misdemeanor battery after he allegedly punched another NFL player in the face Sunday night, according to a published report.

The Las Vegas Review Journal is reporting that Porter was cited for an alleged fight he had with Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle Levi Jones.

"Apparently these two have a history with each other, a history of trash talking on the field," Las Vegas police Lt. Kevin McMahill told the paper.

Jones was treated by medical personnel at the scene, McMahill said.

Porter recently signed a five-year, $32 million deal with the Dolphins after being released by the Steelers.

In his eight-year career, Porter has 60 sacks and 10 interceptions.

Titans' Pacman suspended for season; Henry out for eight games

April 10, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- Adam "Pacman" Jones of Tennessee was suspended for the 2007 season Tuesday and Chris Henry of Cincinnati for eight games -- both for numerous violations of the NFL's personal conduct policy.

"It is a privilege to represent the NFL, not a right," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement announcing the suspensions. "These players and all members of our league have to make the right choices and decisions in their conduct on a consistent basis."

Jones' off-field conduct has included 10 incidents where he was interviewed by police. The most recent took place during the NBA All-Star weekend in Las Vegas. Police there recommended felony and misdemeanor charges against Jones after a fight and shooting at a strip club paralyzed one man.

Henry was arrested four times in a 14-month span, resulting in two benchings by coach Marvin Lewis and a two-game league suspension. He was one of nine Bengals arrested in nine months.

Both the Titans and the Bengals said they supported the suspensions.

I like this alot.
I think the NFL has a strong sense of self, and they are sending a good message here.
From what I've gathered, listening to players being interviewed since the NFL started talking tough (considering a three strikes thingy), they seem to be aware that something needs to be done yesterday.

Poor old Bobby Williams.

POSTED 12:12 p.m. EDT, April 20, 2007

FINS FIRE RUNNING BACKS COACH

Alex Marvez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that the Miami Dolphins fired running backs coach Bobby Williams on Thursday.

Williams acknowledged the development on Friday. "I would say I was devastated,'' Williams said. "It's complicated. But the one thing I know is I'm a good coach. I appreciate everything [owner H. Wayne Huizenga and CEO Joe Bailey] did for me and my family.''

(Except for, you know, the "we don't mean to be rude, but get the hell out of here" thing.)

The team extended Williams' contract through the 2007 season before hiring head coach Cam Cameron in January. Williams said he had an opportunity to head to Alabama with the Nicktator, but that Williams opted to stay put.

"This is not the best time to be out of work,'' said Williams. "I'm just trying to pull things together, get a plan of attack and go from there.''

The Dolphins will pay Williams his salary for the 2007 season. If he finds other work, the Dolphins likely will be entitled to a dollar-for-dollar offset.

From espn:

New England Patriots (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nwe) cornerback Asante Samuel (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6456) says he won't show up for the team's mandatory minicamp, starting Tuesday. Or training camp this summer. Or the first 10 weeks of regular season games.

Samuel, disgruntled after being assigned the team's "franchise" tag, was a no-show at the Patriots Charitable Foundation golf tournament on Monday at the The International Golf Club in Bolton, Mass. Reached by phone afterward, he told The Boston Globe he is unhappy with the lack of progress in contract talks with the team.
"I'm not coming to camp," he told the newspaper. "I'm not showing up until the 10th week [of the season]. I feel unappreciated. The way they're treating me is just wrong."
The prospect of a star player avoiding camp over money is not new for the Patriots. Last offseason, wide receiver Deion Branch (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5951) sat out camp over his unhappiness with contract talks and was eventually traded to the Seattle Seahawks (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=sea).
Samuel has yet to sign the one-year, $7.79 million contract he was tendered when the Patriots franchised him, so he is technically not under contract and cannot be fined for missing minicamp. Under the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the players union, if a deal isn't reached by the afternoon of July 15, he can sign only a one-year deal and cannot have his contract extended until the regular season ends.
If he shows up for Week 10, Samuel will receive a pro-rated portion of that $7.79 million salary. If he sits out the entire year, he'll get nothing -- and the Patriots will be able to put the franchise tag on him again for 2008.
"He's not coming to camp until a contract resolution can be reached," his agent, Alonzo Shavers, told the Boston Herald on Monday. "Nothing more can be said. His status has not changed. There has been no movement toward a deal."
Samuel is looking for a richer contract after a breakout 2006 season, in which he had 10 interceptions and 65 tackles and became considered one of the NFL's elite cornerbacks.
His teammates said Monday they are ready to move ahead, with or without Samuel.
"If he doesn't come [to minicamp], we have to move on," nose tackle Vince Wilfork (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6780) told the Globe. "I would love to have him here, but on the same token, we have to move on."
"Asante has enough experience to realize that this is a business and it's not personal," added safety Rodney Harrison (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=2821). "Coach [Bill] Belichick and Mr. [Robert] Kraft, they're going to do what is in the best interests of this team. .. At the same time, we do miss Asante. He's a good guy, a great player, and we miss having him back. Hopefully, in the near future, they can work things out and he'll be here."

Woman accuses Shaun Rogers of forcible groping
Posted by Bill Emkow June 11, 2007 12:31PM
Categories: Breaking News
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office are considering whether or not to issue a warrant for Shaun Rogers for his participation in some sort of groping incident at a strip club, according to the Free Press and Detroit News.

June 11, Detroit News: Detroit Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers is being investigated on an allegation of sexual assault after a stripper accused him of entering her dressing room and forcibly groping her last week, authorities confirmed Monday.

The 20-year-old woman, who dances at the Players Den on the city's west side, complained to Detroit police Saturday about the Thursday evening incident, police sources told The Detroit News.

Wayne County prosecutors are considering what, if any, charges may be filed.

The woman told police Rogers had a gun in his waistband, but did not say he pointed it at her, police said.

The Free Press didn't provide many more details.

June 11, Free Press: "We will proceed as usual, interviewing the alleged victim and any other potential witnesses," Miller said. "We don't anticipate that we will have a decision today."

Miller said the warrant request accuses Rogers, 28, of criminal sexual conduct, but she declined to elaborate. Depending on the degree, that charge can cover a wide range of sex crimes, from groping to rape.

The incident reportedly occurred at 1:15 a.m. Friday at a club on the city's west side. Authorities did not release details.

this is the kind of thing you might just shake your head at and shrug it off but with the new conduct rules this could be bad

Arrington suffers multiple injuries in accident
By Michael Smith
ESPN.com

Updated: June 18, 2007, 3:48 PM ET

Free-agent linebacker LaVar Arrington was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in the Washington, D.C., area, the player's agent told ESPN.com on Monday.

Carl Poston said it was his understanding that Arrington suffered a broken bone in his arm, three broken bones in his leg, cuts and bruises. The injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. He is recovering at Prince George's Hospital Center.

Arrington, a former Pro Bowl linebacker for the Washington Redskins, is not currently under contract to any team. The 28-year-old Arrington is still rehabilitating an Achilles tendon tear that cut short his 2006 season with the New York Giants.

All-Pro linebacker Briggs signs one-year tender offer

Two-time Pro Bowl weakside linebacker Lance Briggs (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6404), who was unable this spring to reach a long-term deal with the Chicago Bears (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=chi) as a designated franchise player, on Wednesday agreed to sign the one-year qualifying offer of $7.206 million that accompanies the tag, and report to camp on Thursday.
Chicago will advance Briggs, who had earlier threatened to sit out until the 10th week of the season, $1 million of the $7.206 million. More important, the Bears have agreed that they will not use a franchise marker in 2008 on Briggs, to again limit his mobility, provided that he participates in 75 percent of the defensive snaps this season.
Briggs, 26, has averaged nearly 90 percent of the defensive snaps the past three years.
So if Briggs remains healthy through the season, and reaches the same playing time levels that he has in recent seasons, Chicago will not be able to keep him off the unrestricted free agent market next spring.
"Lance decided it was in his best interests, and those of the Bears, to play football in 2007, and to be in camp on time preparing to do so," agent Drew Rosenhaus said Monday evening. "He wants to create the most positive atmosphere possible for himself, and he did not want this to be a distraction to the team. It's a good compromise for everyone involved."
A four-year veteran, Briggs has chafed much of the offseason at being designated as the Bears' franchise player. After rejecting a seven-year, $33 million contract extension last spring, Briggs had sought a long-term deal again in recent months. Bears officials, though, were steadfast in maintaining that they would not offer a multiple-year deal, and that Briggs' lone option was to sign the franchise tender.
In an interview with ESPN.com in March, Briggs didn't mince words about Chicago, the Bears and his teammates.
"There's a difference between the Chicago Bears team and the Chicago Bears organization," Briggs said. "The Chicago Bears team? The coaches, players, city and fans? Yeah, I could stay there forever. I love it. But the Chicago Bears organization? I don't want to be there anymore. I won't play for them and I'll do everything in my power to keep from playing there."
Briggs was adamant about his future of playing for the Bears in 2007.
"Whatever options are available to me, I'll take advantage of them. But going back and playing for the Bears again, no, I don't see that as an option. Not one more day. Not at all."
Chicago balked at a long-term deal for Briggs, in part because the Bears' organization has already committed $6 million-$7 million per year to five-time Pro Bowl middle linebacker Brian Urlacher (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5038). Although the Bears invested heavily to sign both starting cornerbacks, Nathan Vasher (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6869) and Charles Tillman (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6371) to long-term deals within the past month, the club did not place a similar priority on the linebacker position.
The Bears' coaches also feel that a pair of young linebackers, second-year veteran Jamar Williams (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7869) and rookie Michael Okwo (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=8348), could soon be ready to move into the lineup. Both are projected as potential replacements for Briggs at weakside linebacker if he departs after the 2007 campaign.
Rosenhaus said that his client considered accepting the same arrangement from the Bears -- a one-year deal with the promise that the franchise tag wouldn't be used again in '08 -- earlier in the spring. But Briggs held out some hope that a trade could be consummated, and the Bears did negotiate with the Washington Redskins (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=was) on a deal in March and April. The two sides were unable, though, to consummate a trade.
When he was in Chicago negotiating a contract for first-round tight end Greg Olsen (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=8285) three weeks ago, Rosenhaus re-opened dialogue with Chicago general manager Jerry Angelo about Briggs, and talks continued, finally resulting in Wednesday's accommodation.
"Once we got beyond the July 16 deadline [for franchise players to sign multi-year deals]," Rosenhaus said, "this was the best option. At that point, the Bears couldn't sign Lance to a long-term contract, and neither could any other team that acquired him in a trade. And so we tried to make this work, because, under that scenario, he wanted to remain with the Bears. And it's been my experience that players who hold out from camp tend to not play as well. This allows Lance to have another great season, and then we'll see what happens."
The agreement with Briggs means that just one of the original seven franchise players this year, New England cornerback Asante Samuel (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6456), does not have a contract.
Three of the players -- Indianapolis defensive end Dwight Freeney (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5897) (six years, $72 million), New Orleans defensive end Charles Grant (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5911) (seven years, $63 million) and Detroit defensive tackle Cory Redding (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6402) (seven years, $49 million), signed long-term contracts. In addition to Briggs, Cincinnati defensive end Justin Smith (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5451) ($8.64 million) and Seattle kicker Josh Brown (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6558) ($2.078 million) signed their one-year tenders. Neither Brown nor Smith elicited from their teams a stipulation precluding use of the franchise tag again in 2008.
Debate between the Bears and Briggs grew heated at times this spring, with the linebacker telling ESPN.com at one point that he would never play for the team again. He eventually softened that stance, but then adopted the position that he would not report until the 10th week, which would still permit him to gain a season toward the pension plan.
A former University of Arizona standout, Briggs was chosen by the Bears in the third round of the 2003 draft. He earned a starting job as a rookie, emerged by his third season as one of the NFL's top young weakside linebackers, and was chosen for the Pro Bowl in each of the past two seasons.
In 64 games, Briggs, one of the game's best all-around weakside 'backers, has 441 tackles, 3 ½ sacks, six interceptions, 29 passes defensed, seven forced fumbles and three recoveries.

Bulger remains in St. Louis with six-year deal

ST. LOUIS -- Marc Bulger (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5197)'s numbers put him in the top tier of NFL quarterbacks, and now he has a contract to match.
As first reported by ESPN's Chris Mortensen, the St. Louis Rams (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=stl) signed the two-time Pro Bowler to a six-year, $65 million contract extension Friday that makes him the highest-paid player in franchise history. The contract includes $27 million in guaranteed money.
With a $10.25 million average salary, Bulger's new contract places him in elite company, just behind Peyton Manning (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4256), Carson Palmer (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6337), Michael Vick (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5448), Tom Brady (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5228) and Brett Favre (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=1025) as quarterbacks who make $10 million or more on average per year.

That's as good a place as any for him. Their QB situation is very up in the air. By the time he works himself back into 100% football shape and learns the playbook, Leftwich may have played himself out of the starting spot. The only place that could be better, off the top of my head, would be Atlanta. Couch versus Harrington for the starting spot.

Leaving Detroit, Dre Bly's popularity rating wasn't exactly sky high. Now that he's in Denver, it doesn't appear he's starting off on the right foot.

BLY BOOED: Broncos fan to former Lions CB: 'Go back to Detroit'
August 3, 2007

By ARNIE STAPLETON

AP Sports Writer

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Dre’ Bly got burned and then he got booed.

One thing he didn’t get was bullied.

“It happens, it happens,” the Denver Broncos’ cornerback said Thursday after getting beaten for big receptions by backup receivers David Kircus and Brian Clark. “Shoot, I’m human, you know what I’m saying? You’re entitled to give up a pass here and there, it happens, even though the fans might be disappointed. I’m new. But it happens.

“I’ll tell you what, you won’t make a living doing that on me,” Bly added. “You’re entitled to have a day where them guys make plays, and that’s what it is.”

Bly even had to handle some heckling from a fan who hollered, “Go back to Detroit!”

Bly spun and looked at the man, then shook his head and shook it off.

“They paid me money to come here. Everybody’s been talking about me and Champ (Bailey) making plays and they see me give up a play or two, they don’t want to see that. It’s understood. They have expectations just like I do, but everybody is competing just like I am, and they’re going to make plays from time to time.”

The Broncos acquired Bly in the offseason, teaming him with Bailey, a perennial Pro Bowler, to create one of the top tandems in the NFL.

Bly, whose 33 interceptions are fourth-most in the league since 1999, has long wanted to play with his friend Bailey, who led the league with 11 takeaways last season, including a career-best 10 interceptions.

Both ninth-year players are eager to see how many passes they can intercept now.
With Bly on board, Bailey, who finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting, thinks he can top his 2006 season and get tested by quarterbacks more often.

“I have to get more (chances) than last year,” Bailey said. “With Dre’ on the other side, we’re going to make plays. Last year, I picked about a third of the balls (thrown my way). Some quarterbacks don’t care. There are a lot of young quarterbacks that think they can do it, so I’m all for it.”

Bly, 29, thinks he’s the one that’s going to get more balls thrown his way.
“They’re not going to throw the ball (to Bailey). This dude will intercept 18, 19 balls,” Bly said. “He’s got 39 career picks, I have 33, so they’re going to come to the guy with the lesser amount of picks. So I’ve got a chance to get eight or nine picks, career high.”

Actually, the one that might find himself a frequent target is nickel back Domonique Foxworth.

The Broncos obtained Bly from the Lions for running back Tatum Bell, offensive lineman George Foster and a fifth-round draft pick after the death of starting cornerback Darrent Williams.

The team is eager to display a new dynamic in the secondary. Because both Bailey and Bly can lock down receivers, defensive boss Jim Bates is planning new blitz packages in Denver’s revamped unit that features a new middle linebacker in D.J. Williams and three rookie draft picks competing for playing time on the line.

For the past couple of seasons in Detroit, Bly said he was miscast in the Lions’ cover-2 scheme in which the wiry 188-pounder played more like a linebacker.

“This defense, which is an aggressive style, puts you in a position to make plays.

That’s the kind of corner I am, and I look forward to the challenge,” Bly said.
Before Thursday’s performance, Bly had matched Bailey play-for-play this week. He got kicked in his right shin but wouldn’t use that as an excuse.

“Today just happened to be a day where I gave up a few plays. But like I said, you won’t make no living doing that,” Bly said. “I’m not saying it won’t happen in a game, it probably will, but you don’t make livings on me like that.”

dropping bly was one of matt millen's few good moves. a cb who throws his qb under the buss and routinely makes terrible gambles so he can pad his int stats is not someone i need on my team. good luck in denver, dre.

Quinn agrees to 5-year deal with Browns

Jay Glazer
FOXSports.com, Updated 1 hour ago

The Brady Quinn saga is now officially over.

The rookie quarterback has agreed to terms on a five-year deal with the Cleveland Browns, FOXSports.com has learned. The deal is worth $20.2 million, and could reach a total value of $30 million with escalators. The contract contains $7.75 million in guaranteed money.

The deal, which was agreed to Tuesday morning, has not yet been signed, but Quinn was en route to Cleveland to join his teammates on Tuesday.

The No. 22 pick in this year's draft out of Notre Dame, Quinn had been working out in Tempe, Ariz. at Athletes Performance Institute, and last week said he was hoping his holdout would end soon.

His hopes have now been answered.

Alstott out for season; won't speculate on future
ESPN.com news services

Updated: August 9, 2007, 4:01 PM ET

TAMPA, Fla. -- Mike Alstott's season, and perhaps his career, is over.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday placed the six-time Pro Bowl fullback on injured reserve with a neck problem that Alstott said was not related to a career-threatening injury that required surgery in 2003.

"It is what it is. The facts are the facts," the 33-year-old said during an emotional news conference at the team's headquarters. "I can't put on the helmet and jersey this year."

But Alstott, arguably the most popular player in team history, couldn't bring himself to say that he may have played his last game. Several reports earlier Thursday from Tampa Bay-area media outlets indicated Alstott might hang it up, but he shrugged off several retirement-related questions, saying that's something that will be answered in time.

The team's second all-time leading rusher with 5,088 yards had been preparing for his 12th season but became concerned when soreness in his neck persisted as training camp progressed at Disney World.

Tests performed by team doctors revealed a new problem, and the decision to place him on IR was made after Alstott consulted with his personal surgeon, who operated on the fullback during the 2003 season.

Although his role in the offense has diminished every year since the Bucs won the Super Bowl five seasons ago, Alstott is the club's career leader in touchdowns (71) and rushing TDs (58). He was selected to appear in six straight Pro Bowls from 1997 to 2002.

Gerard Warren traded to Raiders
By BigBlueShoe Section: NFL General

The Broncos thought so much of Gerard Warren that they traded him to a division rival. Wow. Leave it to the Raiders (no offense saint) to trade for a guy that was going to get cut anyway. Obviously, this means the Colts won't be getting Gerard Warren. What it does mean is Warren Sapp's days in Oakland are over. So, it is still possible that the Colts will get a Warren, just not the one we thought.

Former Lions QB McMahon dealt in CFL trade for first-round pick

September 10, 2007
FREE PRESS NEWS SERVICES

TORONTO — The Toronto Argonauts dealt former NFL quarterback Mike McMahon to the Montreal Alouettes on Sunday for a 2008 draft pick.

The move ended a frustrating tenure in Toronto for McMahon, who gave up the chance at a lot of money to come to Canada for the chance to play.

McMahon signed with the Argos in the off-season following six seasons in the NFL with Philadelphia and Detroit. He could've remained south of the border as a backup and made the veteran minimum of $720,000 US. Instead, though, he came to the Argos intent on competing for the starting job, signing for a reported base salary of $125,000, with bonuses for each start he made.

However, McMahon appeared in just four games with Toronto, registering just one touchdown pass and three interceptions.

What's more, during training camp McMahon's Cadillac Escalade SUV was stolen. Among the items stored in the vehicle were clothing - including a number of custom-tailored suits - golf clubs and an I-Pod.

The vehicle was ultimately found in Simcoe, Ont., more than 100 kilometres away. It was up on blocks, had been thoroughly stripped inside, the windows were smashed and there was no sign of McMahon's possessions.

The departure of McMahon leaves the Argos with just two quarterbacks, starter Michael Bishop and backup Rocky Butler. Veteran Damon Allen remains on the injured list and isn't scheduled to return until the third-last game of the regular season.

The dealing of McMahon comes less than a week after the club released former Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch after he came off the nine-game injured list.

But it marks the second time in three days that the Alouettes have traded for a quarterback. On Friday, Montreal obtained veteran Jason Maas from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for Canadian fullback Jeff Piercy. Maas became expendable after the Ticats signed free-agent quarterback Casey Printers on Thursday.

The Alouettes are in need of healthy quarterbacks with incumbent Anthony Calvillo out indefinitely with a shoulder injury. Backup Marcus Brady got the start Sunday completing 13 of 21 passes for 300 yards in leading Montreal to a 32-14 win over the B.C. Lions, with Maas and Brad Banks serving as his backups.

Browns deal Charlie Frye to Seahawks
By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com
Updated: September 11, 2007, 1:37 PM ET

Just one game into the season, the Cleveland Browns will make a change at quarterback, as the team on Tuesday afternoon dealt third-year veteran Charlie Frye, who started Sunday's regular-season opener but was benched early in the game, to the Seattle Seahawks.

It is believed that the Browns, who spent much of Monday seeking a trade partner for Frye, received a draft choice in return.

There is no word yet on who will start for Cleveland in next Sunday's home game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The departure of Frye could pave the way for the Browns to turn the starting job over to first-round draft pick Brady Quinn of Notre Dame, but general manager Phil Savage on Monday cautioned that it might be too early for the former Notre Dame star to be elevated to that status.

Savage cited the 1999 season when, after a blowout loss to Pittsburgh, the Browns benched starting veteran Ty Detmer and moved first-round pick Tim Couch, the top overall selection in the draft that year, into the lineup. Cleveland finished 2-14 that season, and Couch, clearly not ready yet to start, struggled throughout the year.

There had been rumors following Sunday's lopsided loss to the Steelers that Frye might be traded or released. Frye completed only four of 10 passes for 34 yards and an interception in the game -- a QB rating of 10.0 -- and was replaced by Derek Anderson at 6;34 of the second quarter. Anderson did not fare much better, going 13-of-28 for 184 yards.

Those rumors gained some steam Monday when journeyman quarterback Ken Dorsey, who had been a mentor to Quinn in training camp, arrived at the Browns' complex. The team is expected to re-sign Dorsey, a four-year veteran, on Tuesday afternoon.

Frye, 26, was a third-round choice in the 2005 draft, and the former Akron star moved into the starting lineup in the final month of his rookie campaign. He started the first 13 games in 2006, then missed the final three outings of the year with a wrist injury.

In camp this summer, Frye competed with Anderson for the top job on the depth chart, and was named the starter the week before the opener. But the loss to Pittsburgh was disastrous and the Browns decided to make a quick change.

In his three-year career, Frye has completed 354 of 568 passes for 3,490 yards, with 14 touchdown passes and 24 interceptions, for an efficiency rating of 70.2. He has started in 19 of his 21 appearances.

With the Seahawks, Frye will be the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart, behind starter Matt Hasselbeck and primary backup Seneca Wallace, who recently signed a contract extension. The Seahawks have been seeking another veteran quarterback since releasing David Greene in the final cutdown to the 53-player roster.

Falcons, QB Leftwich agree to two-year deal

By Len Pasquarelli

Updated: September 18, 2007, 4:01 PM ET

ATLANTA -- Out of work for the past two weeks, former Jacksonville Jaguars starting quarterback Byron Leftwich found a new home Tuesday, signing a two-year, $7 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons.

The fifth-year veteran, released by the Jaguars just before the start of the season, when coach Jack Del Rio abruptly decided to elevate David Garrard into the starting role, met with Atlanta officials, including owner Arthur Blank, on Monday evening. He then took a physical exam Tuesday morning, worked out for coaches and personnel officials, and entered into negotiations.

For now, Leftwich will serve as the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart, behind starter Joey Harrington and backup Chris Redman, while he assimilates the offense of first-year head coach Bobby Petrino. But if Harrington continues to struggle, there is a good chance that Leftwich will eventually compete for the starting job.

Leftwich, 27, has appeared in 46 games, 44 of them as a starter. The former Marshall star, chosen by Jacksonville in the first round in 2003, has completed 789 of 1,344 passes for 9,042 yards, with 51 touchdown passes and 36 interceptions.

The big question mark with Leftwich has been his durability, and he has yet to play a full 16-game schedule. But Leftwich underwent offseason surgery to address a chronic ankle problem, and said in training camp that he was 100 percent physically.

Tank Johnson to Dallas:

full story from ESPN

IRVING, Texas -- Defensive lineman Tank Johnson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6806), who cannot play until midseason because of an eight-game NFL suspension, signed a two-year contract Tuesday with the Dallas Cowboys (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=dal) on Tuesday.

Johnson, who played the last three seasons for the Chicago Bears (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=chi), can't play for the Cowboys and won't be paid until he completes his eight-game NFL suspension for violating probation on a gun charge. He has served the first two games of that suspension and will still have to apply for reinstatement.

Johnson signed after visiting with the Cowboys and taking a physical. He will make about $255,000 this season, the prorated portion of a minimum contract.

"For a lot of reasons, he really just felt the Cowboys were the right fit," said Johnson's agent, Jerrold Colton. "He's so thankful to them for giving him this opportunity. He is very determined to prove they made a wise decision in believing in him."

The team issued a news release confirming the signing and announcing that Johnson will discuss the signing in a conference call Wednesday.

Trent Green knocked out of game after throwing block

October 7, 2007

HOUSTON (AP) -- Miami Dolphins quarterback Trent Green suffered a concussion and was taken off the field on a stretcher Sunday after trying to throw a block against Houston.

The 37-year-old Green was sidelined for more than half of last season for the Kansas City Chiefs after sustaining a concussion in the opener.

The Dolphins had the ball at the Texans 25-yard line when Green tried to pitch the ball to Ted Ginn Jr. The rookie fumbled, then picked the ball up and reversed field as the defense chased him.

Texans defensive tackle Travis Johnson hit Green in the head with his knee before Ginn was tackled by Anthony Weaver. After the play ended, Johnson stood over Green and taunted him, drawing a 15-yard penalty.

Green lay still for several seconds as medical staff rushed to check on him. The Dolphins gathered near midfield and kneeled to pray a few feet away.

Green was strapped to a stretcher and carted off as both teams crowded around him. He was moving his arms on the field.

Green was acquired by the Dolphins in June.

It was the second serious injury in the last two games at Reliant Stadium. Two weeks ago, Houston defensive tackle Cedric Killings was taken off the field on a stretcher after getting hit on a special teams play.

Killings broke a vertebrae in his neck and was hospitalized for five days.

I wonder if Green is done?

Manning, Brady, Favre have shot to become 1st QBs to beat 31 NFL teams
Associated Press

Updated: October 25, 2007, 10:09 AM ET
INDIANAPOLIS -- Peyton Manning and Tom Brady have been rivals on the field for years.

Now the two Super Bowl MVPs could be taking their competition into the NFL record book.

A week before the Colts and Patriots face each other in that highly anticipated showdown, Manning and Brady have a chance to set up the perfect matchup with an almost perfect scenario this weekend: If each wins, and keeps his respective team unbeaten, the NFL says they will become the first quarterbacks in league history to defeat 31 teams.

"I think it's better for a quarterback to do it than a coach," said Tony Dungy, the league's first coach to beat all 32 teams. "You only play those NFC teams once every four years, so that's tough to do."

It's so difficult that even the NFL's record-setting ironman, Brett Favre, has yet to achieve the milestone. Aside from his own Packers, Favre has never beaten Kansas City, Green Bay's opponent next week.

Some might even joke that Manning, Brady and Favre will have beaten all 32 teams, since each could be accused of beating their own occasionally with mistakes.

The greater challenge is simply getting enough chances at each opponent.

Brady, for instance, has faced Washington, this week's opponent, only once in 7½ seasons. He threw three interceptions in a 16-13 loss in September 2003.

"Personally, I don't look at it like that. I think this team faces challenges each and every week," Brady said. "It'd be great to put our best game out there against Washington this week."

Manning, who has been in the league two years longer than Brady, has faced Carolina twice. The two-time league MVP lost 27-19 as a rookie, and again 23-20 in overtime four years ago at the RCA Dome.

Manning will be making the first trip of his 10-year career to Carolina, and have a chance to accomplish the feat first because the Colts game starts three hours earlier than the Patriots game.

"I hadn't really thought a whole lot about that," Manning said of the milestone. "We certainly want to get a win because it's like they said in 'Bull Durham,' it's better than losing."

The statistic can be a bit misleading since many ex-quarterbacks played in a league with fewer teams. The NFL expanded to 30 when Carolina and Jacksonville were added in 1995, went to 31 with the new Cleveland Browns in 1999 and eventually to 32 with Houston in 2002.

Scheduling changes also have made it more difficult. Before 2002, teams played one division from the opposite conference every three years; now it's every four years.

So if Manning or Brady fail Sunday, they won't get another shot at Carolina or Washington until they're in their mid-30s. At age 38, Favre may not get another chance at the Chiefs.

Yet Manning, Brady and Favre have survived in this fickle environment where quarterbacks are constantly scrutinized and sometimes replaced because of injuries or slumps. Favre has started an NFL-record 243 consecutive regular-season games, while Manning is second at 150 and Brady's streak is at 101. Those are the three longest active marks in the league.

What the trio has done best, though, is perform consistently well long enough to give themselves a chance to beat every team in the league except one -- the one they play for.

"He's going to have a tough time beating the Colts," Dungy said of Manning, who signed a seven-year, $98 million contract in March 2004.

Of course, milestones and records are about as much an issue to Brady and Manning as next week's game. They couldn't care less about the buildup.

But they wouldn't mind making a little history first.

"I think Marvin [Harrison] and I are the only two guys left from that [Carolina] game in '98," Manning said. "Coach [John] Fox always has that team ready and it's going to be a tough place to play. That's what we're focused on, Carolina, this week."

Rice, Broncos working out final release details

By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Updated: November 9, 2007, 9:29 PM ET

The brief tenure of defensive end Simeon Rice with the Denver Broncos ended on Friday afternoon when the 12-year veteran requested and was granted his release by the club after an unproductive stint.

"Under the current situation we felt like we were better with the younger players that we do have,'' coach Mike Shanahan said. "They give us the best chance to win and that's the direction we are going.''

The release was first reported by ESPN's Chris Mortensen and subsequently announced by Denver officials. The move makes Rice an unrestricted free agent, but also leaves him with an uncertain future.

Concerns about his surgically repaired shoulder and his age, along with his performance with the Broncos, might dissuade teams from considering him. Rice may be gambling that a playoff contender in need of pass-rush help will take a chance.

In his six appearances with the Broncos, Rice, one of the league's premier pass rushers of his era, registered only seven tackles and had no sacks. He was inactive for two games.

"He asked if it wasn't working out on both sides to be let go, and they obliged him,'' said Broncos safety John Lynch, who played with Rice at Tampa Bay.

"I'm disappointed it didn't work out,'' Lynch added. "I feel partly responsible for urging him to come here, and from the start it never worked out.''

Rice, 34, was released by Tampa Bay on the eve of training camp after six seasons with the Bucs, when the team said that he had failed a physical examination because of the shoulder injury that limited him to only eight appearances in 2006. Rice contended that the release was because he refused to accept a reduction of his 2007 base salary of $7.25 million.

After visiting with several franchises as a free agent, Rice signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Broncos a week before the start of the season. The Broncos guaranteed the deal and part of Friday was spent negotiating a settlement of those guarantees. It is believed that Rice was willing to forego money due him to gain his release.

Upset by a lack of playing time, and by being asked to rush from the unfamiliar left side, Rice acknowledged recently that he regretted signing with the Broncos. He demonstrated some flashes of his trademark upfield quickness, but Denver officials privately questioned the soundness of his shoulder and hinted he still wasn't fully recovered.

It seemed in recent days that the Broncos' brass was about as dissatisfied with Rice as he was with them.

Rice has long been one of the NFL's premier sack threats. His 121 career sacks are second most among active players, trailing only Michael Strahan of the New York Giants. He has eight seasons with double-digit sacks. His streak of five consecutive seasons with 10 or more sacks was ended last year because of the shoulder injury.

The normally durable Rice had missed just one game in his first 10 seasons in the league.

Rice was originally chosen by the Arizona Cardinals in the first round of the 1996 draft. In 172 games, he has 590 tackles, 37 forced fumbles, eight fumble recoveries, five interceptions and 60 pass deflections.

Titans picked up BMW after Oakland cut him. Any chance Chow can revitalize him? He better figure out a way to get fast and get open because he's not playing Stanford and Arizona anymore.

Report: Williams has torn chest muscle, out for season
ESPN.com news services
Updated: November 27, 2007, 3:10 PM ET

Ricky Williams' 2007 season reportedly lasted just six carries.

The Miami Dolphins running back, who was reinstated last month after a one-year suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, suffered a torn chest muscle in the Dolphins' 3-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night, the Palm Beach Post reported, citing an unnamed source.

The injury apparently happened when Steelers linebacker Lawrence Timmons, pursuing a Williams fumble, stepped on Williams' right shoulder blade.

"It's just sad," Williams' agent, Leigh Steinberg, told the Post. "As hard as he's worked. He worked so hard physically to get back into shape and in therapy. He worked so hard for that moment and to have it end this way is sad."

The Post reported the Dolphins were not available for comment Tuesday afternoon.

Anybody else see it? It was pretty bad. I was surprised the stellar broadcast team didn't notice it when it happened.

I wonder how he's going to help himself heal that.

Sorry Ricky (and Leigh), all my sympathies in the NFL are directed in another direction today.

My balls were sweating earlier and I was thinking about giving you some but decided to wash them instead...can't even give you that.

I saw a quick glimpse of it on sports center. It really sucks for him that he's gone through everything he's gone through (yes, he brought it on himself) and then when he finally gets a chance at redemption he gets a freak injury. Its not like this is a "he's out of shape" or "he just wasn't physically ready" type of injury. There's nothing he could have done to prevent that.

Other than not fumble the ball, of course.

Keyshawn going at it with T.O. I like T.O., but Keyshawn's response to what Owens said was great. I like Key too btw.

I heard none of this.

Keyshawn was talking about how at the end of the day T.O. and Dallas' success was owed to Bill Parcells because he essentially built the team. Owens shot back by saying he was a third round pick, Keyshawn was a first rounder, Owens is still playing, Keyshawn is not, he'd like to see Key come out of retirement and try to take Owens' place, shit like that. Keyshawn went on ESPN, spoke about it, and said something to the tune of "Somebody once told me not to get into a pissing match with a skunk."

I've liked Keyshawn ever since he was released a day after the draft, where he said he'd teach Dwayne Jarrett how to play in the NFL. I felt that was bullshit and totally grimey.

NFL caved on the Pat game Saturday night, so everyone will get it, not just NFL NETWORK.

Glenn
12-27-2007, 12:37 PM
I love how everyone (radio talking heads mostly, not just you Tahoe) is claiming that the "NFL caved" or "NFL conceded".

I can't be the only one that realizes that they are being lauded for accepting what amounts to a 4 hour commercial for the NFL Network on not one, but two broadcast networks.

I'm pretty sure they are getting a piece of all the ad revenue that NBC/CBS generates too.

They've played this perfectly, and they are not only winning big in the court of public opinion, there are financial gains to be made here too.

Zekyl

Someone made a point similar to that on the radio. The two guys on the show were arguing about it. One thought it was "giving up" and the other felt that they were showing everyone that "this is what NFL Network is all about, if you like it try us out." Then a third guy came on and said the NFL was talking about buying Time Warner, which I hadn't heard anything about.

Good point Glenn. Caved? Wrong word... but allowed the sale of the game (which ultimately benefits them) so the rest of the country can see the game.

Report: Parcells fires Mueller, to meet with Cameron Tuesday
ESPN.com news services

Updated: December 31, 2007, 12:03 PM ET

Newly hired executive vice president Bill Parcells reportedly has started to put his stamp on the Miami Dolphins.

The Miami Herald reported on its Web site Monday that Parcells has fired general manager Randy Mueller.

Parcells informed Mueller of his decision on Monday morning, the Herald reported.

Head coach Cam Cameron is scheduled to meet with Parcells on Tuesday, the newspaper reported.

The Dolphins were 16-32 during Mueller's three seasons as GM. Miami finished 1-15 this season following Sunday's loss to Cincinnati and owns the No. 1 pick in the draft.

Mueller was GM of the Saints in 2000 and 2001, then served as an NFL analyst for ESPN for three seasons prior to his hiring by the Dolphins. In New Orleans, Mueller traded Ricky Williams to Miami for two first-round draft picks before the 2002 season.
