Players who could be bought out.

Here is the criteria, the player is (1) A pending FA in the off season, (2) Has decreased value because of age or because the team doesn't want them back and don't have bird rights or (3) Have had chemistry related issues or injury issues that makes them expendable. I included just about everyone I could find but I didn't include guys with value in a S&T. For example Morris Peterson likely will not go back to Toronto but they aren't going to let him go for nothing unlike a Danny Fortson with the Sonics.

Nice job, JS.

Most of the guys here that are on playoff contenders will stay put IMO.

If I recall correctly, in order for these guys to be playoff eligible with a new team, they need to be off their current team's roster by 3/1/07, which is next week.

Teams that are fighting for a playoff berth don't really have any incentive to cut a player with this many games left unless there is someone else that they want to sign.

For example, there is no reason for the Magic to buy out Grant Hill before 3/1/07 (as far as I can tell).

Teams that are lottery bound have some incentive to slash and burn some guys. Not only will it help them tank some games, but they can sign a few young guys to replace them and take a long look at their current youngsters without having a disgruntled vet grousing about being benched or inactive.

Thanks for the list, J.

there was no reason for them to keep him either with all the trade value he gave. Orlando is stupid, i'm hoping that they get a little dumber.[smilie=peepwall.gi:

i think rose is a candidate.

I don't think Rose would clear waivers, he doesn't make much on that new contract.

Somebody would claim him before the Pistons would get a shot.

Now that he can't be traded, he's a pretty cheap insurance policy for the Suns.

Chucky might be the best possibility...he's in the last year of his contract and on 2nd worst team in the league...
Bonzi is playing OK now for the rockets and they fight hard for their playoffspot
Hill and Mason wont get cut, and the rest of this guys wont really help us anyway...Jalen, well maybe

Glenn

Miami would claim Jalen, especially now.

Pippen should pretty much be as given there too.

I think Hart, Atkins and Derek Anderson may get a look because they are all candidates to be bought out.

i'd take anderson, but unless we cut flip murray, i dont know if we're getting anyone.

The passing of the trade deadline accelerates the clock on the league's buyout watch. Players waived after March 1 are ineligible for the playoffs if they sign with another team.

So if there are any more Jalen Roses, Chris Webbers or Eddie Joneses this season, they have to be paid off and made available by their current employers by Thursday.

Obvious buyout candidates -- guys with expiring contracts whose names you've been hearing in connection with the trade deadline but weren't dealt -- include Portland's Jamaal Magloire and Memphis' Chucky Atkins.

But the most interesting buyout candidate resides in the East: Steve Francis.

Of course, first New York has to finally be willing to pay off the nearly $45 million that remains on Francis' contract over the two seasons. Mixed signals persist when it comes to the Knicks' willingness to go the buyout route and Francis' determination to pursue his freedom.

But . . .

If a buyout is forthcoming, as one Knicks observer suggests, how long will the line be to sign him?

Cleveland couldn't manufacture a Mike Bibby deal before the deadline no matter how hard it tired. The Lakers also have a backcourt void after their Jason Kidd flirtations proved fruitless. Francis' old team in Houston likewise has a guard opening after passing on a Mike James trade.

Oh, yeah. Almost forgot.

I'm pretty sure Miami has some guard minutes available as well.

Would Joe pursue Francis?

Interesting to think about, at least.

I wonder if Zeke tipped Joe off that he was going to buyout Francis before the trade deadline?

It's possible...

I would go after Francis if he were made available. My number 1 reason is simple he is on our team not elsewhere. I don't know if Francis would be re-born any where, but signing him means he can't prove elsewhere he can contribute.

Francis if bought out would go to LAC to be back with Mobley, IMO.

With all the hate going around in the Clips locker room, I don't know if that would happen...

BUT the Clips were willing to deal Cassell I beleive so if Francis were to be signed, Sam would be on his way out
