It close to that time again, so it's also time to guesstimate which team(s) might be the George Mason/Valpo of the 2007 tournament.

I've got three

Stanford: Close to a 20 win season, and quality wins against top 25 teams. This team can be hot and cold (beat UCLA, lost to shitty Washington) -- but when they're hot NOBODY in the country can beat them. The Pac might send 6 teams to the Dance, and a 19 or 20 win team in arguably one of the strongest conferences this year is plenty good to get them a favorable seeding.

Vandy: Take a look at their record. Nevermind their win vs. Florida. Great wins aginst ranked teams, and crappy losses against clubs like AppState (I think their mascot is a bandana-necked golden retriever holding a shotgun). Like Stanford, they have the talent to go deep, but they have to stay awake to do it.

Appalachian State: Huh? Win vs. Witchita State, close loss vs. Wake Forest. If they can get the bid, they may surprise quite a few. Solid wins against most of their conference. Hell, y'all.. somebody's gotta pick up where Tourney great like Austin Peay left off...?

Now, where's Dre with his Izzo soapbox?

I like Winthrop, and Southern Illinois if they count as a sleeper.

I originally had SIU as one of my teams (note the "edit" at the bottom of my post).

However, my theory is that if they're top 20, then they're not a sleeper. But the Salukis are very good.

Sidenote: First Top 20 team to lose in the Tourney?... Nevada.

Virginia Tech- hottest coach in the country, he'll make noise in the tourney if he can get em in

Of course you have to throw MSU in Denny, I don't know that they'd be a surprise considering their history. But, Izzo and the boys have always come up big when there weren't expectations. I remember the Spartans taking down #2 seed Florida led by Anthony Roberson after ARobe shot his mouth off.

I'll get ya some more soon outside of my 1 solid pick and 1 homer pick.

I like Winthrop as my sleeper as well. They'll be about a 12 seed, and I think they've got a chance to make it to the Sweet 16.

I'd say Southern Illinois, but I don't think you can be a sleeper if you're a 3 seed.

I don't think you can consider Michigan State a sleeper with their tradition, especially since there's a good chance they won't even be there. The Spartans don't have the profile of an NCAA tournament team right now, and DESPERATELY need to beat Wisconsin at least once.

So much for "Bracket Buster Weekend". The Missouri Valley Conference was raped. Earlier this year the local hack where I live called it, and guys, I am NOT making this up, "The best basketball conference in the country this year".
The guy who wrote this came into the Town Where I Live, and wasn't exactly a fan of the Big State U where I live, and absorbed so much heat it turned him into the kind of writer who makes statements like the one above to keep his job now.
Anyway, the Missouri Valley Conference, usually a hot bed for sleepers (Butler, Evansville, Creighton, Wichita State), now faces the very real possibility of having only ONE team in what I like to call "The Big Dance".

Don't count out Gonzaga. Been a tough schedule.

And perhaps good ol' UNLV might surprise a few.
