Lohan denies drinking before car crash

LOS ANGELES - Lindsay Lohan says she was sober before a 2005 car crash near Beverly Hills.

The 21-year-old actress is being sued for negligence over the accident in which her Mercedes-Benz hit a van and injured the driver, Raymundo Ortega.

Ortega, a busboy, alleges Lohan had been drinking at The Ivy restaurant before the crash even though she was underage at the time. Ortega is seeking at least $200,000 in damages from Lohan and the restaurant.

But in a Dec. 15 declaration, Lohan stated: "I did not consume an alcoholic beverage or any type of medication or drug" either before or during her restaurant visit.

A call to Lohan attorney David J. Ozeran wasn't immediately returned Wednesday.

Lohan's declaration was filed Friday in Superior Court by attorneys for The Ivy along with other documents, including a declaration by the waiter who served Lohan. The server, Adam Novicki, said Lohan didn't order alcohol.

Alonzo Howell, a Los Angeles police officer who was providing security for The Ivy that day, also said he didn't see Lohan drinking.

Lohan has countersued Ortega, citing a California Highway Patrol report that said he was at fault for the crash because he made an illegal U-turn.

Lohan served 84 minutes in jail last month after pleading guilty to misdemeanor drunken driving and cocaine charges unrelated to the 2005 crash.

DRIGGS, Idaho - Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann on "Gilligan's Island," is serving six months' unsupervised probation after allegedly being caught with marijuana in her car.

She was sentenced Feb. 29 to five days in jail, fined $410.50 and placed on probation after pleading guilty to one count of reckless driving.

Under a plea agreement, three misdemeanor counts — driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance — were dropped.

On Oct. 18, Teton County sheriff's Deputy Joseph Gutierrez arrested Wells as she was driving home from a surprise birthday party that was held for her. According to the sheriff's office report, Gutierrez pulled Wells over after noticing her swerve and repeatedly speed up and slow down. When Gutierrez asked about a marijuana smell, Wells said she'd just given a ride to three hitchhikers and had dropped them off when they began smoking something. Gutierrez found half-smoked joints and two small cases used to store marijuana.

The 69-year-old Wells, founder of the Idaho Film and Television Institute and organizer of the region's annual family movie festival called the Spud Fest, then failed a sobriety test.

Wells' lawyer, Ron Swafford, said that a friend of Wells' testified that he'd left a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle after using it that day, and that Wells was unaware of it. Swafford also said several witnesses were prepared to testify that Wells had very little to drink at the party and was not intoxicated when she left. He said she was swerving on the road because she was trying to find the heater controls in her new car.

LOS ANGELES — Shia LaBeouf was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving Sunday after an early morning wreck in which the "Indiana Jones" star injured his hand and knee, authorities said.

LaBeouf was trying to make a left turn at a West Hollywood intersection around 3 a.m. when his pickup collided with another vehicle, rolling the truck over, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Scott Wolf said.

"It was immediately apparent to officers responding on the scene that LaBeouf was intoxicated and he was subsequently placed under arrest," Wolf said.

Wolf said LaBeouf was booked then released for misdemeanor DUI. The 22-year-old actor was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and was being treated for injuries to his left hand and a knee, as well as a minor head injury, Wolf said.

A woman passenger in LaBeouf's truck and the driver of the other vehicle were not seriously injured. Wolf did not know the identities of the woman or the other driver.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation,uhhh..intoxication? Wolf said. Two attorneys listed for LaBeouf did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press on Sunday.

Jerry Lewis says gun in baggage was telethon gift

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Comedian Jerry Lewis said the handgun seized from his baggage by airport security in Las Vegas last month was an engraved gift given to him during his annual telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The 82-year-old entertainer, who was detained by police after the incident at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport, explained why he was carrying a firearm in an interview with the TV show "Entertainment Tonight" airing on Thursday.

"I had a gun in my carrying case ... which was given to me by a marvelous engraver," Lewis said. "Last year, at the telethon of '07 he presented me with this gorgeous gift. I put it in that traveling case and I hadn't traveled since that telethon."

The unloaded .22-caliber handgun was found by airport screeners on July 25 while Lewis was on his way to an appearance in Michigan with his manager, Jeff Low, he told the TV program.

"When (Low) asked me if I had a gun, I said, 'I know what I packed, Jeff.' Then it all flashed, a whole year flashed in front of me," Lewis said.

Police issued Lewis a citation for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit and the gun was confiscated. He must attend a court hearing to get it back, police said.

Lewis, half of a wildly successful comedic duo with singer Dean Martin in the 1950s and star of such movie classics as "The Nutty Professor," is due to host his 43rd annual Labor Day telethon starting August 31, live from the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas.

Boy George's troubles with the law took a serious turn in a London courtroom Friday when a judge sentenced the '80s pop idol to 15 months in jail for falsely imprisoning a male escort at his home in 2007.

Judge David Radford told the former Culture Club singer (whose real name is George O'Dowd) he was guilty of "gratuitous violence" for handcuffing and beating with a chain a 29-year-old Norwegian man he had met online and invited to his London apartment for a nude photo shoot, Britain's Press Association reports.

The incident occurred after the Norwegian, Audun Carlsen, attempted to escape.

Supporters gasped, but O'Dowd, 47, is reported to have shown little emotion during his sentencing at Snaresbrook Crown Court, London. He was jailed immediately.

The sentencing followed a trial last year, during which O'Dowd maintained he held the escort because he suspected the man of tampering with his computer. But a jury was not convinced and found the flamboyant singer guilty.

This is not the first time O'Dowd – whose '80s hits with his band included "Karma Chameleon" and "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" – has found himself in legal hot water.

In 2006, he performed court-ordered community service in New York City after pleading guilty to falsely reporting a burglary at his Manhattan apartment, where police discovered cocaine.

NEW YORK (Billboard) – The Parents Television Council is warning parents about the Britney Spears song "If U Seek Amy" and urging radio stations not to broadcast it because the nonprofit organization believes it "would violate the broadcast indecency law" if aired between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Saying the title phrase quickly out loud produces a sound akin to spelling out the F-word, said PTC president Tim Winter. "There is no misinterpreting the lyrics to this song, and it's certainly not about a girl named Amy," he said of the track, the third single from Spears' new Jive album, "Circus."

"It's one thing for a song with these lyrics to be included on a CD so that fans who wish to hear it can do so, but it's an entirely different matter when this song is played over the publicly-owned airwaves, especially at a time when children are likely to be in the listening audience," Winter says.

Founded in 1995, the PTC describes itself as "a nonpartisan education organization advocating responsible entertainment." Jive was unavailable for comment on the PTC's advisory.

The controversy isn't stopping U.S. radio from playing "If You Seek Amy." Six top 40 stations have the song in rotation this week, enough to place the track at No. 92 on the Billboard Pop 100 chart. Leading the pack is WFLZ-Tampa, Fla., which has played it 19 times.

"We're confident the version of the song we air is not crossing any lines," program director Tommy Chuck told Billboard.com, adding that WFLX plays a Jive-created edit of the song that changes "Seek" to "See" as well as a jokey version in which morning host MJ shouts his name every time the word "Amy" appears.

Digitally, "Amy" has sold 107,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Shareholders of an ill-fated Stan Lee venture are seeking more than $750 million in profits from films and other works based on Marvel comic characters such as "Spider-Man,""X-Men" and "Iron Man."

The lawsuit was filed Monday in a Manhattan federal court on behalf of shareholders of Stan Lee Media Inc. Defendants include Lee, his partner Arthur Lieberman, Marvel Entertainment Inc. and its chairman Isaac Perlmutter, and former Marvel Studios president Avi Arad.

The suit names four shareholders who live in Florida, California and Canada. Their lawyer, Martin Garbus, said the suit is aimed at reclaiming money for all Stan Lee Media Inc. shareholders.

The lawsuit claims profits from Lee's comic creations belong to the company, which emerged from bankruptcy in 2006. The suit claims Lee, Marvel and others have violated Stan Lee Media's copyright interests and that the firm is due profits from all properties, including blockbuster films that were made after 1998 and based on Lee's creations.

The lawsuit's allegations were immediately rebuffed, with Marvel issuing a statement that said the lawsuit is filled with "ridiculous claims."

Lee's attorney, Mark W. Williams, said: "We look forward to a positive resolution for Stan Lee and his family."

Marvel also claimed the lawsuit features claims that have been pursued in previous cases.

Garbus said Monday's suit differs in that it names Lee, Arad and Perlmutter. "It's a very different lawsuit," Garbus said. "It's different money."

He said he suspects that Lee, who once sued Marvel over profits from his creations, entered into an agreement that deprived Stan Lee Media of the windfall from blockbuster movies such as the "Spider-Man" and "X-Men" trilogies.

"He made a deal," Garbus said of Lee's confidential settlement that led to his reconciliation with Marvel. "That money should have gone to the corporation."

The shareholders of Stan Lee's company "Stan Lee Media Inc." are suing Stan Lee because (apparently) he made an agreement with Marvel (I assume to drop the lawsuit he had out against them) to reap profits and hide them from his company.

You're assuming wrong. Stan Lee Media isn't really "regular peeps" at this point. Its principal shareholder is someone who makes a business buying out bad assets and fishing for gold. The regular peeps got what little they got a long time ago. A lot of other unrelated stuff is going on around it that makes Stan Lee Media interesting, notably a character name Peter Paul who was Stan Lee's partner. As for this issue... as near as I can tell:

Stan Lee had a lifetime contract from 1994 that was voided by Marvel going bankrupt in 1998. After voiding, Marvel realized they fucked up. The legal climate being what it was, Stan Lee could now tie them up over possible intellectual properly stuff, make damaging comments, and really fuck up their chances of emerging from bankruptcy (whether or not any allegations had any merit -- in fact, that may have been how he scored the sweet 1994 lifetime gig). Marvel "bought off" Stan in exchange for a 10% profit share plus his original lifetime deal.

This was probably a deal worth making. Marvel emerged from its bankruptcy famously well, leading to their current media empire. They had claimed a lack of profits from the first Spider-Man blockbuster, though. Stan Lee sued them for $10 million, citing the "conditional rights" assignment made in 1998, and won. The conditional rights amounts to to "Stan Lee will not fight for any rights he might happen to have to Marvel characters". Compare and contrast with DC, who's still slugging it out with the estates of Siegel and Shuster over Superboy rights as the result of a changing legal landscape.

Meanwhile, Stan was forming Stan Lee Media. Stan had assigned intellectual property for any creations he has or may ever have to SLM the month before the Marvel deal, using similar boilerplate from the same attorney. The idea was that new creations of Stan's would be owned by SLM. No one bought into SLM before its bankruptcy because there was any hint that they might own a chunk of classic Marvel characters. Now the lawyers will make money sorting out whether these speculative rights can be double-assigned and what the contracts really mean.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that Rihanna was “reportedly hospitalized with bruises on her face.”

Convicted Murderer VARG VIKERNES To Be Released From Prison - Mar. 10, 2009
Varg Vikernes (a.k.a. Count Grishnackh) — the former BURZUM mastermind who is currently serving a Norwegian prison term for the August 1993 murder of MAYHEM guitarist Oystein Aarseth (a.k.a. Euronymous) and setting fire to three churches — will soon be a free man.

In September 2008, Vikernes's fourth application for parole was denied, but a couple of weeks ago he finally received the message he has been waiting for: after almost 16 years in prison, he will be released.

"I will have to report [to the parole officer] for one year — initially every two weeks, and then once a month," Vikernes told the Dagbladet newspaper.

Varg's mother, who last year wrote a letter to Dagbladet in which she argued that her son was being unfairly treated by the justice officials who repeatedly denied his parole application, is very relieved that her son will be able to join his family in Bø (a municipality in the county of Telemark, Norway), where he recently purchased a small farm.

"I am very happy that he has been so strong and that he held out," she said. "It will be good for the family that they can be together every day."

For the past couple of years, Varg has been allowed to leave the prison regularly to walk around Tromsø, Norway (where the prison is located) and visit his family: his mother, his wife, eighteen-month-old son and sixteen-year-old daughter.

"I'm ready for society — and I have been for many years," Vikernes told Dagbladet last July . "I have learned from my mistakes and become older. Now I just want to be together with my family. My mind has never been in prison; I think all the time about what I should do on the day that I am released." He added, "I have barely seen my son since he came into the world. Even though I hear his voice on the phone almost every day, it is very tough to not be present while he is growing up. I miss my family. And I look forward the day that I could work on my farm, create music, write books and be with the wife and kids around the clock — and live a normal life. I have received tremendous support from my family. It means a lot."

Last year it was reported that case workers at the Justice Ministry feared that Vikernes would be unable to adjust to life on the outside after his years in jail.

In denying his parole for the second time, the Justice Ministry emphasized that Vikernes escaped from prison in 2003 and that he has ties to neo-Nazi groups.

"I haven't been in contact with them for a long time. Police security services know this," Vikernes previously told the VG newspaper.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – A mobster-turned-FBI informant whose life inspired the movie "Goodfellas" is wanted for failing to appear in court on tickets alleging he was drunk in public in San Bernardino.

Henry Hill, 65, faces two $25,000 arrest warrants. He says he wasn't aware he needed to be present in court Wednesday and had asked for a new hearing date because he was having hernia surgery.

"I was hoping the court would understand," Hill told The Press-Enterprise of Riverside from his San Fernando Valley home.

The cases stem from two public intoxication arrests in May 2008. Hill said he was in alcohol rehabilitation at the time.

Hill was again arrested in Los Angeles earlier this year and released before his arraignment because of jail crowding.

"I don't remember much of all that, but I've been sober a month now," he told the newspaper. "I don't want to drink anymore."

The "Goodfellas" movie ends with Hill, played by Ray Liotta, entering federal witness protection after implicating fellow mobsters in murders and the 1978 heist of $5.8 million in cash from a Lufthansa Airlines vault in New York.

Drug arrests led to Hill being removed from the federal program in the early 1990s.
