Two nights before the actual dunk contest -- and assuming you can still have an actual controversy in what sadly ranks as the faded jewel of All-Star Weekend -- I'm told that Dwight Howard is rather steamed.

Reason being: Howard's request to have the basket raised on a couple dunks he had planned for Saturday evening has been denied by the league.

Orlando sources report that Howard has been practicing a couple wicked maneuvers that might inject this dying competition with the ingenuity/originality it desperately needs. One is a 360 throwdown with the rim hiked to 12 feet, two feet higher than regulation. The other sets the rim at 11 ½ feet and has Howard purportedly going between his legs with the ball in mid-air before flushing.

Seeing Howard do a 360 dunk on a 12 foot rim would have been wild as hell.

I probably won't watch the dunk contest, but if I'd heard that was going down I would have tuned in. The league is stupid for turning this down.

There are betting lines for most of the All Star activities (including the Barkley/Bavetta race) in the Sportsbook. ("http://wtfdetroit.com/forums/vbookie.php?')

Chris Paul with 16 points, 17 assists, and 9 steals, and the sophomore team shot 75%.

I had Monta Ellis as the MVP in the Sportsbook, if it weren't for the beast that is David Lee, I was looking at a nice score.

david lee should not have got mvp IMO. should've been paul....

lee played well, but come on- i could've scored on all those buckets. he benefitted from being wide open and having easy shots.

he was just padding his stats.....not to mention the play where it was a breakaway and bynum was actually ahead of him but lee still chose to score for himself.

anyway, i say gerald green wins the dunk contest. not sure about the 3 point shootout. who is in it again?

Matt

hate to say it, but Pippen does look like he's in the same shape as when he played.

of course that doesn't mean squat in terms of how he can play in real games.

Chauncey, Cash, and Laimbeer representing Detroit tonight.

too bad Mason didn't get his "Ch-ch-auncey B-b-b-b-b-illups!" tonight. just a normal intro.

Matt
02-17-2007, 08:47 PM
Classic.

Laimbeer arguing w/ the refs because of time issues.....

Steve Kerr: "Laimbeer comfortable arguing with the officials".

Sadly, doesn't look like Detroit can win this one. that half court shot is killer.

Matt
02-17-2007, 08:48 PM
oh wait, Detroit gets a time of 1:06. still might make the finals.....

LOL the crowd gave Detroit a booing.......probably due to the controversy, but Laimbeer got a solid booing when he start talking in the post contest interview. Then Swim Cash leads the team in a "DEEETROIT BAAASKETBAAAL!!" to some boos.

I love it.

uh, Lebron sucked in the skills competition. talk about no sense of urgency....

Matt
02-17-2007, 09:11 PM
maybe i spoke too soon. Lebron w/ 35.4, Chris Paul w/ 39.6.

02-17-2007, 09:15 PM
lol @ Gordon.

I cant believe the NBA denied Howard. That would have been pretty awesome to see. Maybe since he can 360 at 12 feet, he can 720 at 10. That would be entertaining. Glad they made a time limit for the dunk contest this year, last year by the time Nate got his dunk it wasnt even cool anymore. I kind of want to see what Tyrus does after getting himself in trouble. Either way, dunk contest is lame and Ill just have it on in the background while Im doing other things. One guy on TV I heard said that instead of the dunk contest the NBA should have a game of HORSE. No way I would miss that.

Matt
02-17-2007, 09:18 PM
worst contest ever.

can the players at least pretend to run?

they should have a defender chase them or something. that was a pathetic first round.

Kobe blows the Finals because he couldn't make that first pass.

somewhere in America, a journalist can't wait to put that tidbit in his article.

Dwyane Wade wins the contest and........a PS3.

wow, everyone in a particular section of the crowd gets a PSP.

Barkley vs. Bavetta coming next. easily the highlight of the night.

UxKa
02-17-2007, 09:30 PM
How the hell can they give Wade a PS3? I know its advertising and all, but c'mon. If he wanted one he already has it, probably has a few. That just kind of pissed me off.

02-17-2007, 09:41 PM
BARKLEY!!!!! Too bad he couldn't breathe for 2 minutes.

Matt
02-17-2007, 09:54 PM
damn, i thought Bavetta fell, but he layed out for the finish line.

Barkley tumbling made the entire competition worthwhie, lol.

Matt

Gilbert should shoot the next round w/ 1 hand....

Matt
02-17-2007, 10:14 PM
Jason Kapono, Gilbert Arenas, and Dirk Nowitski advance

Matt
02-17-2007, 10:20 PM
Jason Kapono wins the Three Point Shootout.

Arenas, knowing he can't win, does in fact shoot the last rack w/ one hand.

Matt
02-17-2007, 10:39 PM
damn, Gerald Green is nasty.

Matt

quote of the night: Charles Barkley after Nate Robinson's first dunk: "Anytime a midget does that, you gotta give him a 10"

Dwight Howard!!!!

Nate Robinson and Gerald Green in the finals.

at least this year, everyone came ready with creativity.

Dwight Howard got robbed. that sticker is ABOVE the square. SIIIIIIICK.

Matt

Howard is a bad bad man. I cant believe he isnt in the finals.

that dunk was fuckin' gold.

he puts up a sticker, Jameer Nelson measures it and holds up a 12' 6" sign.

everyone's like, "what's on the sticker??" the camera zooms in and it's Dwight's smiling mug.

Nate Robinson shot 10% FG on his last dunk attempt.

UxKa

Nate Robinson shot 10% FG on his last dunk attempt.

Better than last year. Im still mad about Howard. Nice pic of him kissing the rim Matt.

Matt
02-17-2007, 11:10 PM
i'm just so damn curious what Howard had in store in case he made the finals. he had the whole 12' 6" sticker thing planned, so i'm sure he knew he had to top that in the finals. i thought Dwight would be a stiff out there, but his windmill wasn't so bad.

Gerald Green vs Dwight Howard had the potential of being a memorable dunk contest.

Agreed. I think we could have heard Magic say 'The dunk contest is back!' lol

Dwight's Dunk=Most underrated Dunk ever in the history of that competition. Too much lil' guy bias. Tyrus Thomas was the worst dunker since Chris "Methman" Anderson. I can only hope Nate never enters it again. Gerald Green was damn good, but after they jobbed Dwight, he had no competition.

A guy Who I think woulda won if he came back was Andre Igoudala.

Black Dynamite
02-17-2007, 11:27 PM
Also I liked that MJ was hard on the Dunkers, trying to push them to do more. I see Carter and Kobe started to lower their scores to kiss his and Dr J's ass. [smilie=peepwall.gi:

Dwight Howard should have been in the Finals. If you let him in he needs to judged the same. Its like saying Punters and Kickers can't get into the HOF, you can't let them play then penalize them for something out of their control.

I think Green would have won anyways but nevertheless Howard should have been his competition not Nate.

I thought that this all-star weekend was boring as hell.

Barkley vs Dick in a race on the court? You have to be kidding me. What a waste of time.

Tyrus sucked balls, nate took 20 attempts, dwight got robbed and gerald was alright(although i picked him to win)

In the skills competition, no one wanted to see dwade win again and kobe was being a cocky ass mofucker just giving up like that..

The Vince Carter and Jason Richardson dunk contests were sick. Its amazing that Nate Robinson can dunk being that short but he missed too many and took the excitement out of the arena.

I'm thinking keep the 3pt/dunk contest and add some new competitions. Maybe a legends game with 2 12 min halfs. Have Larry/Magic/Isiah. Yeah, I know they are old but I grew up with them.

I miss those jrich and vince days as well.

The only other dunk that had me going was the AI to AI dunk.

I see great things in Gerald though.

I also agree in adding new things. Skills competition gets boring.

BTW, i don't remember but the NBA all-star game doesn't mean shit right?

Does anyone else think a mid-range shooting contest would be sweet. I always loved the 10-15 footer drills we did in basketball practice moving to a different spot after every shot and being fed passes off screens.

Maybe I'm just weird because I have too much love for the mid-range game. But Rip Hamilton vs. Michael Redd vs. Ray Allen vs. Kevin Martin... etc. would be pretty fucking sweet to watch.

THe Flopping competiton. It would have Manu, Varejo, Nocioni, and Wade. Wade might not win do to the fact that he's not flopping for free throws. I've never really seen him flop on defense.

Varejao would win because of his nose-grabbing theatrics when there wasn't an elbow with in 5 feet of his face.

actually, a game of 21 might be fun to watch.

although it could take a while if they allow tips back to zero.

still, a cool idea.
