View Full Version : Make a suggestion, win a prize, WINNER ANNOUNCED
The Syndicate 02-15-2007, 01:51 PM We've been working on some exciting site enhancements and new features for both the home page and the forums. This includes a new look for both.
We wanted to provide an opportunity for you guys to make any suggestions for what you might like to have added or improved, so we decided to make a little contest out of it.
From now until Monday, Feb 26, feel free to post any suggestions that you'd like to make about our site in this thread. That means suggested new features, content, enhancements, appearance, pretty much anything.
After the 26th, we'll pick the best suggestion and that person will win one of our famous 500 minute long distance calling cards (sorry, this is the last one we have, U.S. posters only).
Capish?
Bring on your suggestions.
Glenn 02-16-2007, 10:07 AM My suggestion would be to get some actual suggestions.
WTFchris 02-16-2007, 10:30 AM Suggesting a shrine to WTFchris is not a valid suggestion either (though it may be a good idea).
DennyMcLain 02-16-2007, 07:50 PM My suggestion is to hold a "Brown Paint Brush Tool" contest, with Internet Sensation GlennDanzig as the judge, jury, and executioner as to who wins.
Example: With the Brown Paint Brush Tool, I shall now recreate a famous WTFer in amazing detail.

Like...wow!
Cross 02-16-2007, 11:42 PM i THINK I saw this in another forum but...
A thread such as the random pictures thread or the movie thread...has a shitload of pages...i think WTF could use a "page finder"?
so instead of going alll the way to the first or last pages and pressing the page before it, we could just type a page number?
just a suggestion
Zip Goshboots 02-16-2007, 11:45 PM I'd like to see a literature forum, and a PGA Golf forum.
Zip Goshboots 02-16-2007, 11:46 PM Cross:
That's damn good.
Hermy 02-17-2007, 07:52 AM when I Yahoo WTFDETROIT.com I get this:
Detroit Pistons, Red Wings, Lions, Tigers, University of Michigan, and Michigan ... WTFDetroit.com NFL Power Rankings - Week 5, 2006 ...
Gay.
Some forums have a respect feature. If you like or dislike somebodys post you give them positive or negative respect. Over time the respect rating builds for each member, up or down, and you can see who is really respected or disrespected on the board. The more respect you have, the more weight your given respect has on other users. Your rating would be displayed under your av or something.
I dont know how well this would work around here just because there arent a ton of active posters. In that sense it might not be too helpful compared to a board with 1,000 active users. This was pretty much the only thing I could think of, you guys do a good job.
Zip Goshboots 02-17-2007, 07:23 PM Uxka:
I like that one.
Zip Goshboots 02-17-2007, 07:25 PM I think there should be "Posters" of the Month, year, week.
You get more alpacas (see MY total), and maybe a special fron tpage bio and picture. Kind of like the "Employee of the Month" parking space at the mall.
Great stuff so far, guys :)
Keep in mind, this isn't just for forum enhancements on the technical side. Suggestions can have a bigger scope as well. Particular content or articles, non-forum features, contests, etc.
Tahoe 02-17-2007, 09:09 PM It was a few years back but we played a version of Survivor...Online Survivor. I can't remember everything we did but it was kind of fun.
I don't want to play it but thought I'd make an attempt at this thread.

Call it "The Rerun Thread"

Not a prob. Pretty detailed and a great idea too, huh. LOL
MoTown 02-19-2007, 08:51 AM Mini-suggestion here.
As for the Sportsbook: I think we should add all the game info/recap once the game is complete. It's not a big deal, but I would like to see all of the info once I lose all my alpacas.
Glenn 02-19-2007, 12:23 PM I think there should be "Posters" of the Month, year, week.
You get more alpacas (see MY total), and maybe a special fron tpage bio and picture. Kind of like the "Employee of the Month" parking space at the mall.
Don't fret Zip, you'll receive the gift of 500 alpacas in early March.
Zip Goshboots 02-19-2007, 04:06 PM Well then, forget what I said about that "Poster of the Month" bullshit.
UberAlles 02-19-2007, 05:03 PM I have a suggestion. Someone needs to consistently stock and moderate the Champagne Room.
My glass is empty.
I also do not want a prize for this amazing suggestion. Just more pr0n.

FYI
Gutz is the mod of the Champagne Room.
I think he does a pretty good job, he's only one guy, and he's only got one free hand most of the time.
Maybe if there was a way to make somebody have to post something (a pic, a video) each time they want access?
MoTown 02-20-2007, 09:45 AM Howabout a weekly "Poster Power Rankings." Or maybe a top 25 rankings, similar to the BCS.

Yeah, just don't ask me to do that.
It'd be very controversial, but funny of course.
Problem is, there'd be like 2 or 3 per season.
As for the Sportsbook: I think we should add all the game info/recap once the game is complete. It's not a big deal, but I would like to see all of the info once I lose all my alpacas.
Yeah, they can just post the links to those ESPN.com overviews like: http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/recap?gameId=270225008
Some forums have a respect feature...
This is a pretty cool idea, but like you said, it would be nicer at other boards with more members.
--
As far as what I've got, maybe a "multi-quote" button, in which you can quote multiple posts at once. It'd be a button right next to the quote button, and when you press it, it'd be highlighted, so when you press "reply" all the posts you wanted to quote are there. It's all I've got.
Glenn 02-25-2007, 09:43 PM We're planning on picking the best suggestion on Tuesday or Wednesday, so you've still got time if you want to sneak one in by the end of the day tomorrow.
DrRay11 02-25-2007, 10:01 PM Damnit, I'm still stumped.
MoTown 02-26-2007, 08:29 AM Yeah, just don't ask me to do that.
It'd be very controversial, but funny of course.
Problem is, there'd be like 2 or 3 per season.
That's all we need is two or three per season.
micknugget 02-26-2007, 02:07 PM For one thing i'd like to see a little more color. Maybe have Detroit team logos running down the sides. Even better would be to have the various trophies with the years that Detroit teams won. That would look nice.
I also wonder how hard it would be to have a scrolling bar that would have new topics or sports news or even just Detroit stats or scores.
Zip Goshboots 02-27-2007, 08:35 PM OK, dudes, this is gonna be radical.
Number one, I love this forum, webiste, or whatever it's called.
Lots of great posters, great ideas, and great writers. Lots of funny guys.
One thing I keep hearing is, "When we get more members" etc
The thing is, this board looks like every other message board ever invented.
There's no pizzazz, no pinache.
Why? Well, let me tell you.
Threads. Threads are the bane of a message board/forum/website existence. Threads make it hard to navigate. They make the typical lazy computer guy go, "Fuck this. Threads. I have to click on something, find a topic I like, and then post. If I'm lucky, some guy will read this shit, and then respond. If not, the GENIUS post I just made will just float off into never never land".
The thing about these boards is, people got something to say. And, once they say it, they look for a reaction. If you have to navigate through threads, forums, and everything else, people are just like, "Fuck it. I'll just go to porn, jerk off, and go to sleep".
Drop the threads. keep the different forums, but drop the threads. Make it an "ideas" board.
But, you are now saying, "Zip, you are the smartest person I've ever met. Your writing is crisp, clear, concise, and funny. But you are now a dope, because we love our threads"
And I say: "Well, what if the average poster looks at your board, rolls through the threads, and doesn't see something he likes?"
He'll just click the red X at the upper right hand corner of his screen and vanish.
Keep the forums, but abolish threads. this board is awesome. It's Big Boy posting. Swearing, naked chicks, guys telling each other to "Fuck off". If you don't have to research, or navigate through 19,000 threads, you are going to join and post.
Otherwise, people just look for forums, and try to find a thread they like, then they click in and see some posts. Not good.
Also, threads die out. No flow, no conversation, no give and take, no back and forth. One guy posts something, and then someone finally replies 58 hours later, and the thing has run out of steam.
Try it. The conversation will insipre people, there will be a lively exchange, and it will go on and on.
Keep the forums, but let there be a "free flow" within them. Fuck this "color within the lines" shit.
Thus sayeth J Zipperton Goshboots the 3rd.

It's being shrunk one pixel at a time.
Zip Goshboots 02-27-2007, 08:47 PM Well, it's not like I think everyone is out to get me, but SOMEONE IS OUT TO GET ME!!!
I'm not paranoid, I'M JUsT A SCARED INSECURE OLD MAN!
Glenn 02-27-2007, 08:58 PM Just to clarify, are you suggesting that chaos=more members?
Zip Goshboots 02-27-2007, 09:04 PM It's not chaos, it's freedom.
And even if it is chaos, then yes, yes, put me down for it.
Too many restrictions, to much formality, and you have the formula I laid out.
You only have so many posters. You're gonna have your core: The rest are going to look at the format and say, "Well, I don't have 100 years to figure this out"
And don't try to kid yourself into thinking that this is some sort of exclusive club. It's a computer message board.
Take the darn handcuffs off, and watch this board fly. Fly like an eagle.
Zip Goshboots 02-27-2007, 09:05 PM You have to tell me what IBSSTWSBZG means.
Glenn 02-27-2007, 09:13 PM You have to tell me what IBSSTWSBZG means.
No, I do not.
You have to guess, that's how it works.
As far as your "chaos model", I'm not understanding how zero organization is easier for a new visitor to figure out than the structure that we have.
Appreciate your suggestion though, maybe you can start a movement and stage a takeover?
DrRay11 02-27-2007, 09:30 PM Zip, no offense, but that is one of the worst ideas ever IMO. Message boards need organization, or else it drives members like me away. Chaos is for idiots and anarchists.
A Chaos forum, however, might work but it would just be like the "Any topic, discuss" thread.
Zip Goshboots 02-27-2007, 10:15 PM When you are in the forrest, you cannot see the individual trees.
What you guys are missing, is the point that it is not chaos. It is freedom, poetic license.
These forums don;t have to TELL people what to post about. They might make suggestions, like an NCAA forum, or an NBA forum, but the individual threads can work against you.
Why? Because people will see threads, and look for threads that interest them. If they see nothing that sparks their interest, they may leave.
Why, Zip, why? Because they may think they are limited to posting about or on that topic.
If people can click in, and see free lance posting, ideas from every corner of the world, they will be more inclined to join in.
Again I say: Threads are the bane of forums. They make your forum look like every other forum that has ever existed-ed-ed-ed-ed
Now, when I say that, picture Andy Kaufman, on SNL, many moons ago, singing along with the Mighty Mouse theme song.
Men, Here I am, to save the dayyyyyyy
Trust me on this. Guidleines, rules, and threads: They are like cubicles in an office.
This isn't a fucking fish tank where you swim for 24 inches, hit a piece of glass, turn around, and do it again for 18 months until you die. This, men, isWTF=DETROIT!!!
If I, Zip Goshboots, didn't believe that, I wouldn't suggest the dropping of the threads! I would simply swim with the rest of the goldfish, bumping into glass and turning around, until it was my turn to be flushed down the toilet.
The again, I'd FAKE it, so I would get flushed, and then I'd find myself out in the Great One, Gichigoomee, free at last, FREE AT LAST,THANK GOD AWMIGHTY! I'M FREE AT LAST!
DrRay11 02-27-2007, 10:18 PM By the same token, people could scoll through a "chaos" forum and find nothing immediately interesting, then leave.
Zip Goshboots 02-27-2007, 10:28 PM No, Young Grasshopper.
That's why you have the BEST of BOTH worlds, with forums, and then FREELANCE POSTING!!!
What interests a writer, or a would be writer, or a wannabe writer?
An open forum!!!!
Trust me: You can click in, and scroll for days, oh, delirious days on eeeeend!
You can read, and read and read!
Like I said: Currently, a guy posts, or starts a thread, and it dies a slow painful death. Maybe he gets a reply 12 hours later, maybe not. But when, and if he does, the moment has passed. The romance has died.
Oh, don;t worry, my freind: You'll have PLENTY of people who want to discuss the benefits of the Piston's trading their third string center for the third round pick in the 2014 draft; You'll have MANY people who want to dicsuss how the Lion's can make salary cap room by cutting their 4th string punter! It will never end!
But, just think of the possibilities: A guy can click in, and see some genius post about farts by Zip Goshboots, or some love letter to Drew Beitzel by fillycheesesteak, and see all of this in ONE GLORIOUS PAGE!!
Oh! Guess what? You can have a separate "Thread Forum", much like "WTF Central", where people can click in and see their beloved threads, and try to find something interesting among 914,762 threads, unless, of course, they die of old age first!
Zip Goshboots 02-27-2007, 10:38 PM Someone is really fucking with my shit.
Who removed my graduation photo from my profile page?
Edit: I am Zip's imaginary friend. I'm restricting his posting activities for the night.
Don't worry, Zip will wake up Friday and feel just fine.
So I looked at your profile Zip just to see if the supposed graduation photo was there. Our b-day is only one day off... dont you hate it when it falls on mothers day? Worst b-days of my freakin life.
As to your suggestion, maybe just have a section of the forum be the chaos section. No threads can be made in it, it is just the chaos section. Kind of like an upgrade to the 'any topic discuss' thread. Other than that, no I dont see your idea working.
Zip Goshboots 02-27-2007, 11:13 PM How long has this forum been around?
How many times have I read the phrase "When we get new members", OR, "We don't have that many memebrs yet"
Now, tell me if the CURRENT idea is working.
Forrest/Trees.
Discuss.
you guys are starting to make me mad.
Glenn 02-27-2007, 11:55 PM We went from 0 to 500+ members since December 2005.
There was a base of about 125 that came from another site, but we had to get them all back here (and re-registered) when we re-launched in 2005 after a 4+ month hiatus due to technical difficulties. If they didn't find value, they would have moved on.
I don't know how expecting visitors to wade through thousands of random posts to find something that interests them is seen as a positive.
The threads allow people to pick and choose what they spend their time reading based on what interests them.
There's your freedom.
(Despite the spirited discussion here, your suggestion is still welcomed Zip, even if the contest ended on Monday, it's making people think at least. Myself included.)
Zip Goshboots 02-28-2007, 04:53 AM Wel, thanks for listening, man.
Let me say this: As far as boards with threads go, this one does a good job. When you click a thread, you at least see every post in that thread in its entirety. Most boards seem to be set up so you read one post, then have to click on another, and so on. One of those is "M Live"--the worst forum ever in the history of the world.
I know that when I found this place, on a referral post while a regular on another forum, the threads just about scared me off.
Then, when I was completely banned for life from the other forum (and told that if I ever even read ANY Detroit NEWSpapers, I'd be tortured and killed), I came over. I worked through the threads, and can deal with it now.
But that's just me: I'm lazy. I only haunt one forum at a time, and don't really research any others.

Before Sharon Stone Tries Whacking Sid Bream & Zip Gohsboots?
WTFchris 02-28-2007, 09:28 AM Actually, when you mentioned getting rid of thread I immediately thought of the Mlive forums, which are the worst ever. There is no flow, no topics to follow. I like to come on, hit "new posts" and see what people have said in responce to my posts. I like to continue conversations or debates. Without threads, you lose all debate. All topics are temporary and debates are never settled. You'd simply post something and nobody would read it because they won't bother sifting thru everything, nobody has the time for that.
Sorry, I hate the idea Zip.
Zip Goshboots 02-28-2007, 09:33 AM That's OK with me. I just threw it out there, and the disagreements have been forceful and well thought out and explained.
I appreciate the input guys!
Threads Forever!
WTFchris 02-28-2007, 09:36 AM lol. at least you have the balls to make a hard suggestion.
Zip Goshboots 02-28-2007, 09:45 AM Thanks Chris.
And I can understand where you guys are coming from.
I agree with your take on Mlive, of course. Like I said about this forum, which is still different than any other I've checked out, you can read every post in a thread in its entireity, which kind of makes every thread what I was suggesting. There is a great flow that way.
And again, thanks for all the feedback. WTF Detroit really does ROCK if you axe me.
WTFchris 02-28-2007, 09:52 AM I just wish we had more Hockey and MLB posters. Everyone here is a Pistons fan mostly, and then likes 1-2 of the other sports as well.
MoTown 02-28-2007, 09:53 AM I, however, think you might be headed in the right direction, Zip. While I don't think more threads are the answer, the time that the board is peaking is when there are a lot of controversy. So while creating a lot of threads might hurt organization, I think people should not be affraid to post controversial subjects. People shy away a lot of times for fear of being ridiculed, but I think the courage of posting that stuff is beneficial for the board.
I'm not suggesting making stupid, cliche topics such as "Abortion, discuss" or things like that. But if you have an opinion that others may not have, post it!
Look what Zip's post did to the WTFCentral forum. That's the most action I've seen out of it in months.
Zip Goshboots 02-28-2007, 09:56 AM MoTown:
That's been a beef of mine: People who read it, but don't post. You shouldn't be afraid to get your opinion out there, man, that's what this is for.
The Syndicate 03-01-2007, 10:28 AM This suggestion was selected as the winner.
Congrats 1979, check your PMs.
