According to the Free Press, Dre Bly has been given permission to seek a trade.

February 14, Free Press: Lions president Matt Millen and coach Rod Marinelli have given cornerback Dre' Bly permission to seek a trade.

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Matt and Rod allowing me the opportunity to find a home for Dre' Bly that is more conducive to his Pro Bowl skill set," Bly's agent, Kennard McGuire, said Tuesday.

He doesn't appear to fit in Rod Marinelli's defensive scheme, and he's owed quite a bit of cash for 2007.

February 14, Detroit News: Bly was not as effective last year playing in coach Rod Marinelli's Tampa Two defense, which requires the cornerbacks to be more physical against the run.

Bly will cost the Lions more than $5.4 million against their salary cap if he is with the team next season.

cleaning house time.....add another hole on defense.....it will be interesting to see what they can get for him though

Ugh.

They need more Dre Blys, not fewer.

LMAO that he has "tremendous respect for Millen" for allowing him to get the hell out of here.

Can't blame him one bit.

no, they need to put guys like dre bly on crusifixes so that we can all be entertained by their slow, painful deaths.

dre bly is a fuckhead, and him demanding out is the best thing he's done for this organization. only an organization filled with assholes like the lions would have named dre bly a captain. i sincerely hope we send him down to miami so we can reunite him with his favorite excuse, the piano man.

I don't think he's "demanding out". He doesn't fit the system, period.

Bly says leaving is Lions' call

If it were up to Dré Bly, he wouldn't be going anywhere.

But he says it's not his decision.

Bly says his sooner-than-later exit from Detroit is being orchestrated by the Lions. Basically, the Lions are saying they don't need the services of the All-Pro cornerback any longer.

So, Bly was told he and his agent, Kennard McGuire, could work out a trade. Otherwise, expect to be released.

"I wouldn't mind staying, but it's not like it's my decision," Bly told The Detroit News on Wednesday. "They're going in a different direction and I don't want to be a part of something, be here, if I'm not in the plans.

"I respect them for telling me."

Lions president Matt Millen did not return phone calls.

Bly, the face of the Lions the past four seasons, isn't bitter. He understands the business of football. And in this case, he's happy the Lions gave him a chance to control his own destiny.

"They gave me the opportunity to shop around, see what's out there," said Bly, who has not been contacted by any other teams yet.

This didn't hit Bly, who turns 30 in May, like a ton of bricks. The change in direction became clear during Bly's first meeting with new defensive coordinator Joe Barry. Barry talked about the rumors swirling that Bly wasn't wanted anymore and there was a chance he could be cut June 1.

It makes sense.

The Lions, under Rod Marinelli, use the Tampa Two defense, a cover 2 system. Bly is used to running a big-play defense.

"A guy of my caliber is not needed (in the Tampa Two)," said Bly, who is scheduled to make $4.2 million this season.

"I'm a cover corner, a guy who makes plays."

Consider Bly's numbers last season: three interceptions, down from six in 2005.

"This system doesn't need the kind of player that I am," said Bly, a Pro Bowl starter in 2004. "And that's a playmaking corner that likes to match up."

No regrets
No one who has ever come to Detroit was more enthusiastic about being part of the solution than Bly.

Sure, his five-year, $24.5 million free-agent contract signed in 2003 was incentive, but Bly really wanted to turn this team into a winner.

"It's been frustrating," said Bly, who was part of a Super Bowl champion with the Rams. "It's hard going to work every day when you're not successful. Anybody would struggle, going to work four straight years and being at the bottom of the barrel. It makes it not fun to go to work."

But Bly isn't the first big-name player to get the door -- remember Herman Moore and Robert Porcher?

Still, Bly is looking positively at what the future holds.

"We probably want this to go as fast and smooth as possible," he said. "But it's no bad taste in my mouth. Everything I experienced here, other than (not) winning football games, was good."

football players are all assholes. This team needs talent so fucking bad.

being an asshole is fine. maybe even good.

blaming everyone but yourself rather than working harder is bad, though.

rather than saying 'no one is gettnig the job done. no one on this team is outworking the guy he lines up against. we all need to work harder and longer. its not the pieces, its the effort.', dre through joey under the bus. not only should you never do that, but if dre really thought a new qb would fix everything, his football iq isnt high enough to keep him around as a waterboy.

this year was supposed to be about changing the culture of the franchise. so what did we do? we named our best finger pointer captain. we also went 3-13. thats our lovable losers, though. they can do virtually nothing right.

LIONS TO LET HALL, BELL SHOP AROUND, TOO

A member of PFT Planet has alerted us to media reports that the Lions, who have invited cornerback Dre' Bly to find a trade partner, have likewise asked defensive end James Hall and defensive tackle Marcus Bell to do the same.

Bell is signed through 2007, and he is scheduled to earn a base salary of $950,000.

Hall is signed through 2008, at salaries of $2.75 million in 2007 and $3 million in 2008.

Permission to seek a trade is often a precursor to a guy getting cut.

Dre' Bly being let go is understandable. He doesn't fit our system. Letting Marcus Bell go is also understandable. There were a lot of rumors that he wasn't a hard worker. Why are we letting James Hall go? I always heard he was a hard worker and a team player. We're already short on defensive ends as it is.

MLive.com doesn't believe defensive end James Hall will be traded.
Hall became a "locker room politician" last year, which annoyed Lions brass and led him to be permitted to seek a trade. Detroit will try to jettison several players with bad attitudes, but realizes Hall still has value.

ON THE BLOCK: Marinelli said the Lions had given offensive lineman Ross Verba permission to seek a trade, and he confirmed they had done so with defensive tackle Marcus Bell, cornerback Dre' Bly and defensive lineman James Hall.

Asked if it was a way of saying they were parting company, Marinelli said "I guess" and "probably." But he stopped short of saying the players definitely would be gone.

I don't understand putting Hall on the block. Edwards sucks, Redding has been moved inside. Our pass rush already sucks, so how can we move Hall? He produces (when on the field).

Its probably a bad attitude toward the team. Maybe toward the end of the season he became a bad seed and he's not showing any signs of improving. We can't make exceptions for anyone if we're trying to change the attitude of the franchise, but that would include Shaun Rogers too.

What is Millen going to do? Keep having bad drafts and crappy FA signings and cut every player because they are sick of losing? Try building a team properly and players won't bitch.

Glenn

Exactly Chris.

This is all fallout from Millen's bad decisions.

The Ford's either can't see the connection or choose to ignore it.

Can the Hall stuff mean that Simeon Rice may finally be making his way to Detroit sometime soon?

WTFchris

Probably, but why cut Hall? He makes 2.5 mil. Cut that lowsy Edwards and play Rice opposite Hall. At least Hall plays the run and can give you 8-10 sacks a year too.

The story out of Detroit is that the Lions are willing to part with cornerback Dre' Bly, and it should not take a first-round pick ... or maybe not even a second-round pick. From what I could gather, the best landing spot for Bly is Denver for possibly a third-round pick and a player or two. Detroit has a number of needs, and the Denver roster has a few guys who could help them. The sad and sudden death of running back Damien Nash will probably put the trade talks on hold for the time being, though.

The hottest trade name in Indianapolis isn't necessarily Bills running back Willis McGahee. It's Lions cornerback Dre' Bly. Ten teams initially showed interest in Bly, but the list has been trimmed to a more manageable six. The Lions gave Bly permission to shop himself and his phone has been overloaded by teams making recruiting calls.

Some of this is reduntant:

The trade market for Lions cornerback Dré Bly is heating up, with the Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins strong candidates to make a bid for the two-time Pro Bowl player.
Bly, who has 33 career interceptions -- 19 in his four seasons with the Lions -- would fill a need for both teams.
The Broncos are looking for a cornerback to start opposite Champ Bailey , who has been voted to seven straight Pro Bowls. The Redskins have concerns about Shawn Springs , 32, because of injuries that limited him to nine games in 2006.
Bly, 30, has one year left on a contract that will pay him a base salary of $4.2 million in 2007.
Lions president Matt Millen also is trying to complete a trade for defensive end James Hall before Friday. The St. Louis Rams and Oakland Raiders reportedly have expressed an interest in Hall.
The free-agent signing period begins Friday, and Hall has a roster bonus due if he is on the Lions roster Friday.
The Lions have made it known that they will release Hall rather than pay the bonus.

Not really a cut, but Marcus Pollard signed with the Seahawks, who are apparently cutting Jerramy Stevens.

Are we considered as needing a tight end? We have Fitzsimmons and Campbell. Campbell played really well last year and Fitz is a pretty solid backup. He was going to be our starter until he got injured. We have McNeal, i think his name is, that plays TE and FB.
