Found out this morning that our family dog has bone cancer. The dog is a golden retriever and 12-13 years old, but it is still hard to take. Wierd how they become part of your family. My sister rushed the dog down to some vet in bloomfield for a second opinion and that is where she is as I write this. I guess there is no point in being upset though because everyone and everything eventually dies. dammit

especially for a big dog. I worry about my Lab because he's 2.5 and sometimes his hips pop when he gets up. They are known for bad hips. They do become a huge part of your family. No matter how shitty a day I have, he's always happy to see me.

We've got three boston terriers (one is 7, the other two are 5) that we might have to get rid of because my son might have a dog allergy.

Makes me sick to even think about it.

I know what you guys mean.
A couple years ago, I let my daughters talk me into cats. You know, THEY'LL clean up after 'em and feed 'em.
Yeah, right. I think they've cleaned out the litter box three times.
But I can't get rid of them fuckers, cuz now I LOVE 'EM!

Gusman - My dog died of cancer two years ago. It was the first pet I ever had. I cried my eyes out when he was gone, and it took a while to get over it. My only advice is to enjoy every bit of the time you have left. Also, don't worry about deciding when will be the right time to let him go. You'll know.

Damn dogs. They're the only ones who are happy when we come home. They like beer. They'll eat the shit your wife cooks that you don't want (fucking Emeril), when your wife's sister visits, and brings her asshole husband (the braggart, the one who is fucking perfect), the dog will sniff his balls in front of everyone and embarrass the hell out of him.
They can hold their shit and piss for 12 hours while you're at work (come to think of it, mayne THAT'S why they're happy to see you). They can lick their own balls. They get to see all the chicks naked (oh, they PRETEND they don't care, but then again, they go lick their balls afterward).
They chase the fucking cats back into the basement, back behind the furnace where they belong. They sleep 18 hours a day. They can chase their tail for two hours and be thrilled (while WE chase tail all our lives and end up croaking from a heart attack at 52).
Did I mention that they lick their own balls?

I put my Sadie down last summer and it was very very hard. My wife and I did it on a friday and it took forever to get over. It still sucks not having Sadie around. Its like you said, they become a part of the family. She was almost 15.

Right now, I want another dog but don't want to have to go through that again.

Good luck

Sorry to hear that. Spend some time with her when you can. My parents have a 15-yr old Cocker that has been having some issues so I feel for ya.

depends on what type of dog you like. I wanted a big dog that has a good temperment. I don't like lap dogs (if you want the dog on your lap, why not get a cat?)...if it can't fetch then it's not a dog, sorry.

I have a lab and they are very loyal dogs. They try to please you and need a lot of attention, which is good with kids. English style labs are more low key. Mine was high strung for the first 2 years, but he is pretty calm now. Tons of personality. Golden Retrievers are usually even more low key than labs. More hair, but i've never met a mean golden either. Everyone has their own preferences on dogs, but I've always had labs so I can't really say much about other breeds.

we thought it was arthuritus, and took her to the vet. the vet x rayed her leg and you could see the tumor. then we took her to a specialist and found out that it had spread to her lungs. i think yesterday may have been one of the top 3 worst days of my life.

this sounds stupid to non dog peeps but thats the way I felt. My parents died when I was young and making the decision and putting my dog down was in that same category of loss. They are a family member for some of us.

Not to bring it back up, but Im pretty torn up today. The 15yr old Cocker I mentioned who is now 16 was put down today and its a rough night. Today sucks. Just had to vent that I guess and I knew there was a thread already.

Sorry to hear about your dog.

However, 16 is a good lifespan. When I hear of someones death, the very first question I usually ask is their age. IMO, anything over 75 is a good long life, and the death (unless excrutiating, of course) should be celebrated for exactly what it was, 75 years of memories spanning over 8 decades.

The dog gave you 16 years of love. The tragedy would have been if he perished at 8.

I'm very sorry to hear about sick dogs in this thread. Dogs are the most noble and decent friends you'll ever have. I have a 90-lb black lab so I know this to be true.

Sorry to hear about your pup, Uxka.

We gave up all 3 of our dogs last month, and it's been really difficult and strange knowing that they belong to someone else now.

We got rid of the cats about a month ago, the girls cried, and it was weird for a couple days, but they weren't cleaning the litter box, and after one too many hairballs on my couch, it was time to go.
Dogs are different, though, and even though I hate barky dogs left outside all night (like my neighbor Tim's dog Oscar last night), I don't think I'd ever get rid of a dog once I got him unless the circumstances were dire (like my wife having an affair with him).
My neighbors have dogs that bark like maniacs when you walk by or are out mowing the lawn, but one day I just went up and started petting them, talking to them, and now we're best buds.
That's a dog. A cat just doesn't give a shit.

At least one of my kids is allergic, maybe two, so we really didn't have a choice but to get rid of them.

I think that's one reason my wife and I don't want to have kids right now. If something happened and we had to give up the dog, it would break my heart, and it would completely crush her.

I still remember that episode of the Brady Bunch where they had to get rid of Tiger because Jan was allergic. At the last minute the figured out that she wasn't sneezing because of Tiger, IT WAS HIS FLEA POWDER!!!

THEY GOT TO KEEP TIGER AFTER ALL!!!

I remember Alice, holding a jar of peanut butter in that scene, being particularly happy that it was the flea powder and not Tiger.

Piss her off enough and she'll leave on her own.
