View Full Version : OGT: Michigan @ Michigan State
Baker 02-11-2007, 09:42 PM Here we go boys! The Wolverines head to the Brez on Tuesday for an extremely important Big Ten showdown. The Wolverines headed into the season with a more experienced team than the Spartans. They were also picked to finish in front of State and possibly be the last team in the tourney from the BT, bumping the Spartans out.
But, an early season upset win over Kevin Durant and the #25 Longhorns opened eyes and sparked a good early season record for MSU. Recently the Spartans have put together a losing streak though, having played #3 OSU twice in four games.
It looks as if the two MSU-UM games might determine each team's postseason fate once again.
Welcome to the Breslin!

Hermy 02-11-2007, 09:44 PM Not a big college hoops guy, but this has interest at 9/10.
Glenn 02-12-2007, 10:53 AM Dr. Tre, are you related to Lou Holtz?
State is going to pummel U of M.
Baker 02-12-2007, 10:53 AM Moodini and I are going to the game. We won't be real close, but we'll be directly mid-court. Can't wait for the game, it should be great!
Baker 02-12-2007, 10:56 AM Dr. Tre, are you related to Lou Holtz?
State is going to pummel U of M.
I always hear this out of UM fans. I hope you are right, but comparable performances against similar competition say otherwise. MSU doesn't really have the ability to pummel competition because they do not have many scorers.
UM has experience, they've played in the Brez before, they have a shot. I'm not picking UM, but they really need to win this game for their season and for the good of the program.
Moodini31 02-12-2007, 12:35 PM I will be at an MSU game at the Brez for the first time, but it doesn't really count because they're playing Michigan right?
My prediction-I think MSU wins by about 8 and that both teams miss the tourney this year. Like Tre said, if Michigan doesn't beat MSU at the Brez this year, we may never see it again.
MoTown 02-12-2007, 12:47 PM I actually hope State pummels U of M to speed up the process of getting Tommy's ass out of there.
Glenn 02-12-2007, 12:52 PM I'm just waiting for the line to be set so I can put all of my Alpacas on the line.

I read an early line of MSU-7. Hmmm. I'm not giving 7 with that team against OLSM. I think that State holds service. Like Tre says they lack too much scoring punch to be laying more than say 4.
Interesting blurb on CBS Sportsline yesterday with Dodd doing a little Bracketology. He has MSU 10th seed in the West. Only 3 other B-10 teams make it the way he sees it. Obviously OSU and Cheezitz. The other is Indiana @ #5 in the East.
Baker 02-12-2007, 10:54 PM Michigan State will be in the tourney and it starts tomorrow. If MSU can win 20 games, they are in. A 20 win MSU team will always get in. I'm not guaranteeing it or anything that bold, but I see a great MSU performance tomorrow and a win against Michigan.
If Izzo gets this team to 20 wins, I stand by my early opinion, greatest coaching effort he has had. It will be tough though, no doubt.

GO BLUE (and fire Tommy)
Tahoe 02-13-2007, 09:25 PM UofM looks big. I don't see them play out here.
MoTown 02-13-2007, 09:58 PM I'll admit that I haven't watched a lot of Michigan games this year but they look the same as they have for the past six years - scared and stupid. I've never seen a team with a lower basketball IQ year after year.
b-diddy 02-13-2007, 11:41 PM firing amaker is irrelevent, imo. if your a phenom, why would you ever go to michigan? we have crappy weather, crappy facilities. our tradition (football draw, but basketball?) is 10 years of shit now. unless your talking about bringing in a very elite coach, a coaching change in and of itself probably doesnt get us over the hump.
MoTown 02-14-2007, 08:14 AM I understand what you're saying but don't agree with it. I don't think "giving up" is the way to go. Bring in a young coach, someone who is on the rise. Will they bring in elite players right away? No. But that's how good programs are started - by coaching. And if they can find a good coach (that's a big if), then that's at least a start.
Artermis 02-14-2007, 09:42 AM Gratz to MSU for beating another bad UM team that has no heart or toughness.
Morgan is going to be a heck of a player next year.
Glenn 02-14-2007, 10:35 AM The outcome of this game was about as predictable as giffman humping a goat on a Saturday night.
That was a stone cold lead pipe lock.

I'm not sure what you mean by capitalizing the word EFFORT. When I said that 20 wins and a tourney birth would mark this as his best coaching "effort" I was trying to say the exact same thing as before with different word choice. Best effort, best performance, best coaching job however you want to say it.
I stood by my opinion even after the Purdue debacle. Any intelligent basketball fan can watch MSU's team and see they are desperately in need of the athletic guards coming in and without them they are not a talented group. You take them to the tourney and you are the man.
Baker 02-14-2007, 11:17 AM Okay, now to the game. Seats were amazing for this game. Surprisingly, this was my first MSU-UM basketball game and I loved it. The atmosphere has been better before, but not much. And that was with a blizzard going on outside that kept some from coming.
The first half was as ugly as it gets with a bit of Lights Out greatness mixed in. Moodini and I both saw the second half coming. Michigan's offensive sets are an absolute joke. I truly and honestly believe that I could do a better job coaching that team in the game than Amaker does. That is not a statement reflecting my ability, but a statement about just how bad Amaker is.
Were watching from above and every single possession we see minimum 3 out of the 5 guys on the floor just standing watching the guy with the ball go one on one. RIDICULOUS.
I was very pleased with MSU's performance in the second half. They kept the run going even after UM fought back. I told Moodini I thought Raymar would be the best player for MSU before the game, and he absolutely was. I love his game.
This was a big win and it'll get things moving in the right direction. It's always great to whoop on your rival and get momentum in your season.
A little side note, Greg Kelser was selling his new book at the game "Greg Kelser's tales of Spartan Basketball" and he was signing them. I picked up a copy-pure hotness. Great buy for any Spartan fan from what I can tell so far.

UM is still a bigger 'draw' than someone like Purdue.
Give UM a MVC style coach who won't screw everything up and you'll show some promise. Kids will want to go to UM, as much as a disaster as you are, you can pretty easily get talent here. Good Bball is played up north, and UM can play the academics card, no matter how BS that is for 95% of these kids.
UM starts not wasting games and they will become a tourney team pretty quick, like a Purdue. And AFAICT that would make UM pretty happy.
So get Bradley's coach or some other random school, and get to work.
Baker 02-14-2007, 08:49 PM MSU's women's coach was on the radio today and she commented on the size or lack thereof with UM's team. She said they were one of the least physically impressive teams she has seen and she couldn't believe the kids were that small coming from a BT school. She said they looked like they haven't hit the weight room at all. Compared them with MSU's Gray, Raymar, etc. and said that the difference was shocking.
When a women's coach is ripping the physical appearance of your players and their dedication in the weight room, you have issues.
"Those Wolverines are a bunch of pussies!"

Either that or she goes 275, benches her weight and compares the men's team to herself.
