Game 44: Detroit Pistons at New Jersey Nets
TV: FSN Detroit; Radio: WDFN 1130 AM - The Fan
Wednesday, January 31, 2007
Continental Airlines Arena - East Rutherford, N.J.
Probable Starters | Game Notes | Injury Report
The skinny: The Nets’ season was on the verge of implosion when they became just the fourth NBA team in history to lose three straight one-point games. That’s how their just-concluded five-game Western road swing began – and they still had the two toughest games to play, at Denver and Utah. But they recovered from those three daggers – Sacramento beat them on a Mike Bibby shot with 10.3 seconds left, Golden State on a Monta Ellis three at the buzzer and the Clippers on Cuttino Mobley’s triple with 0.6 left – by whipping Denver by 10, then closed the trip on Vince Carter’s triple at the buzzer to edge Utah. Amid rumors that the Nets are shopping Carter and perhaps Jason Kidd, New Jersey’s 22-23 record has it in first place in the Atlantic Division. Center Nenad Krstic (knee) is out of the year and Richard Jefferson (ass cheeks) indefinitely following surgery on his sore ass.
What to watch: Though the Nets had Tuesday off while the Pistons were fighting uphill all night to catch Washington, the schedule-maker might not have the impact it would seem on first blush. The Nets’ West Coast trip didn’t end until Monday night at Utah and their depth has taken a hit with the injuries to Krstic and Jefferson. But the Pistons can’t afford to start sluggishly, as they did against Washington. Kidd, despite his age (34) and injury history, is playing about as well as he ever has. Without Jefferson, who usually plays well against the Pistons, Flip Saunders might try throwing Tayshaun Prince at Carter as a change of pace from Rip Hamilton.
