There is a ton of talk that this guy is going to be bought out any day now. If we could get him for free, would we want to sign him? He's 35 but he just hit a very clutch shot a few games ago and looks like he still has something left in the tank. He could be a very capable back-up to Rip and could play quite a few minutes to give Rip some rest. I would feel he is a big upgrade over Flip. What do you think????????

I'd take him if he could still hit open shots, but clearly he can't anymore.

%37 from the field, %30 from the arc.

I'll pass. We don't need the "10 years later" version of carlos delfino.

Over Shaq's dead body. Shaq can't stand the guy.

I wouldn't be worried so much about that considering the fact that he is playing for the Grizz and is probably miserable. It's amazing how good players "perk up" when they go to a contender.

really? i think jones and shaq were tight. i thought it was him and kobe that hated each other.

Read Shaq's autobiography, Shaq Talks Back, where he disses Eddie Jones publically and badly. Magic Johnson didn't like him either, FWIW. Kobe and Eddie Jones were actually friends from before they went pro, but there was some contention because Kobe played behind Eddie at the get-go.

I would love to get Eddie Jones, absolutly love it. He would be a fine backup wing here, but he won't come here. My guess would be the Lakers and the Heat... but apparently not if Shaq hates him.

Clutch ONLY in the regular season. Come playoff time, he pulls a Houdini.

In Eddie's defense, Stackhouse had that same reputation until he joined Dallas and played well in the playoffs coming off the bench.

There's no reason why Eddie can't do something similiar, if he has anything left in the tank, which I'm not sure he does.

Right now I wouldn't mind looking at Eddie Jones but we would either need to move somebody or waive someone. I think he will go to Miami, or Utah who seemes interested in him and are shopping Giricek. Miami makes less sense for him than Utah because they have enough depth a 2/3 (Kapono, Posey, Wright, Walker and Wade).

If Jones goes to the Heat, you know the Heat aren't done dealing.

Jones and Shaq had some shit between themselves but I'm sure shaq will say we cool. Of course shaq doesn't really mean it

Tip-in: Veteran guard Eddie Jones didn't officially play due to a coach's decision, but has agreed to a contract buyout with the team. The Griz could waive Jones as soon as today.

will Eddie Jones be a good BACKUP POINT GUARD?

If the answer to that question is no, then fuck Eddie Jones.

That is all.

He really can't back up Chauncey but that's not the point. He would be a great backup for Rip and sometimes Tay. We would still have Flip/Nazr/dd/picks to trade to get our back up PG.

micknugget i can't trust your gamble judgement when you have no alpacas left in your betting bank.[smilie=bigshot.gif]

Seriously i see no "need" for him and no proof that he'll shoot better here. he wasn't a go to guy in memphis, and his role wasn't that much different than it would be here. in fact we'd give him even less minutes maybe. I like his defense, but i dont believe in him as a consistent scorer off the bench, which is what we need. i wont be mad if we sign him on the el cheapo. but dont see any need..

It's hard to believe that we could keep adding waived vets, they can't ALL come here.

That said, I've pretty much given up on my Jalen Rose pipe dream. Even if he gets bought out again, there's a decent chance that somebody would claim him off waivers since his PHX contract is very reasonable.

The only way we could get him, IMO, is via trade (read: FLIPMURRAY).

My alpacas are tied up in the super bowl bet but you have to take gambles anyways. C. Webb was a gamble and he's looking pretty good right now. If we can get Jones for free (min contract) then I don't see why we wouldn't do it. He would be great for 10-20 minutes a game.

Grizzlies Waive Guard Eddie Jones
Memphis, Tennessee – Memphis Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced today the Grizzlies have waived guard Eddie Jones.

In 29 games this season, Jones averaged 5.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 19.3 minutes per game. The veteran guard scored a season-high 19 points, including the game-winning shot, in a 132-130 overtime victory on Jan. 24 at Utah.

“We thank Eddie for his tremendous contributions during his stay in Memphis,” said West. “He was a consummate professional and we wish him well in his future basketball endeavors. On a personal note, I think he has a bright future in basketball after his playing days are over.”

Last season he averaged 11.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.75 steals in 75 games. His 1.75 steals per game was the highest average by a Grizzly since the team moved to Memphis. In four playoff appearances against Dallas, he averaged 10.3 points per game, the second-highest scoring average on the team.

Jones was acquired by Memphis from Miami in a five-team trade on August 2, 2005. In 104 games with Memphis, he averaged 10.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. Through 872 career games, Jones is averaging 15.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.

Jones free to sign with Heat on Thursday

By Chris Sheridan
ESPN.com

Eddie Jones is heading back to the Miami Heat, ESPN.com has learned.
Jones agreed Monday on a buyout with the Memphis Grizzlies, giving up about $300,000 of his $15.7 million salary to gain his freedom from the team with the NBA's worst record. The money lost through the buyout will be made up when he signs for a prorated portion of the NBA minimum.
Jones will clear waivers Thursday morning, after which he can sign with any NBA team.
However, a source close to the situation said Jones has already decided he'll sign with Miami, meaning it is possible he will be in uniform for the defending champs when they play the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night.
The 12-year veteran spent five seasons with the Heat before being dealt to the Grizzlies in the five-team trade in the summer of 2005 that sent James Posey, Jason Williams and Antoine Walker to the Heat.
Jones was averaging just 5.6 points in 29 games for the Grizzlies after being a 16.0 scorer over the first dozen years of his career.

Why would he go to Miami? They are pretty crowded there for swingmen. Is he 3rd string behind Kapono and Posey?

Glenn

Maybe they are ready to dump Posey as rumored? They are also shopping JWill, apparently.

I never understood how a player could be traded away, basically being dumped saying "We'd rather have this guy than you" and then that same player can come crawling back soon thereafter. It seems a little pathetic to me.

(I don't include Lindsey in this because everyone knew the Celts would just cut him right away. He was only in there for money purposes.)

I would've guessed Utah. If they get rid of Posey for Eddie out of position, then they have Eddie out of position which was one of the reasons they got Posey. :)

Does EJ bring perimeter D? utahs only looking for perimeter defense.

If the Heat were looking for a 3pt shooter then its a decent move. wait they have kapono.

Yes, Eddie Jones does bring perimeter D (or at least he used to -- dunno how much is left in the tank).
