Language altered in Carr's contract

Addendum makes it easier for coach to retire after '07 season
Friday, January 26, 2007BY JOHN HEUSER
News Sports Reporter

The latest update to Lloyd Carr's contract includes a change in language that would make it easier for the University of Michigan football coach to retire from the job after the 2007 season.
Signed by Carr on Dec. 21 of last year, the addendum calls for the school to set up a deferred compensation account worth $300,000 within 15 days of July 1, 2007. Carr will collect his money approximately a year later if he remains employed by Michigan "in any capacity, until July 1, 2008.''
According to the terms of Carr's contract, he will be appointed an associate athletic director at the university and draw his base salary when he retires as coach.
In a prior deferred compensation agreement that went into effect in 2005 and required $300,000 per year to be set aside for two years, Carr must work as "Head Football Coach'' until July 1, 2007 as a condition for receiving that money.
Michigan athletic director Bill Martin said earlier in the week it was a "mutual'' decision to alter the wording in the latest addendum, which was obtained by The News through a Freedom of Information Act request.
"It doesn't mean anything as a practical matter,'' Martin said. "It was just flexibility for both of us, nothing else.''
Carr, 61, who is 113-36 in 12 seasons as Michigan's coach, has never been specific when asked about his timetable for retirement. He has hinted, however, that it could be sooner than later, even joking last season that he'll end his tenure at Michigan before Joe Paterno, 80, retires at Penn State.
"At some point, the enthusiasm, the energy, the love for what I'm doing will change,'' Carr said prior to the Rose Bowl. "When it does, that'll be it.''
Besides the deferred compensation, Carr is paid a base salary of $347,619 per year, plus $765,000 in additional compensation annually. He also receives a bonus equal to one month of his base salary when Michigan qualifies for a bowl game, or two months when the Wolverines reach a Bowl Championship Series bowl.
Martin said he and Carr have discussed the coach's retirement, but the athletic director added he really doesn't know when that will be.
"We've all wondered that. Those are tough jobs,'' Martin said. "As far as I'm concerned, Lloyd will retire when he wants to, pure and simple.''
Carr could not be reached for comment Thursday, according to an athletic department spokesman.

Okay call me crazy, but when did Malcolm "Cam" Cameron become Bear Bryant, and how long have I been in a coma? The last time I checked he was 19 games under .500 at Indiana and his sole claim to fame there was Randle El. So when he got the Dolphins job last week, I had to do a double take, if he was in the conversation as head coach of a top 5 program in college, I would wonder how John Sinclair became the president of the University?

I am not a Michigan fan but I know that Lloyd Cooper needs to go, and when that overdue day does arrive, the University of Michigan can do a lot better than Cam Cameron, they should have their pick of whomever they want.

Plus since when does have a new coaching job mean that you can't book after a year?

Not trying to be a dick, but I just don't understand the love affair with Cam although Glenn is a stater like myself so maybe it is an attempt at sabotage. . Cam is a great guy, I met him on a recruiting trip, it is nothing personal I just don't think he is that impressive.

UM's job confuses me. You have the option of a pro-HC, but that seems like a waste of $$$, as UM already has the prestige and isn't falling apart. Or a coordinator, but then recruiting ?'s come into play, and will he be able to come in immediately? And is there a guy who has the name like Weis or Crennel or somebody did.

But then you have college guys, and they have a reasonably high fail rate, and getting the right combo of name/recruiting/ability is tough.

Who is Michigan going to go after? Ron English is the obvious choice, but he's going to have to do well this year, or he's going to lose alumni support. I don't know who is in the pro's for you, I've heard people say that Gruden would be interested, he'd be great for you guys. Otherwise who is there? Gary Patterson from TCU? Tedford at Cal? Who else would be worth going after? Schiano said only PSU, RR brings in 1.2 thousand criminals and would piss off the UM core. And Boise's coach still has too many ?'s.

How do you see it working out?

My pick right now is Carolina Defensive Coordinator Mike Trgovac. Just call it a gut feeling as I have no inside information. Until Lloyd makes the announcement there is no real reason to worry though. A lot of shit can happen in a year if that is when Lloyd chooses to go.

Listen, you just have to "Get with Zip". Zip Goshboots is a state of mind, man. I'm filet mignon to the Cheese Steak. Sorry, that's just how it is.
As for UM's next coach, anyone who doesn't think it's gonna be Les Miles just isn't paying attention. Miles has a poster of Bo Schembechler behind his desk, and word is if you get himn talking UM football and Bo, he'll break down in tears.
UM has quietly talked to three people already: Ferentz of Iowa (he has a daughter at UM, Tigervac (as Bob Ufer used to call him), and Miles.
It's going to be Les Miles, folks. Unless, of course, Lloyd sticks his ass into the process and wants DeBord to get the job.
We're looking at total regime change here: Miles comes in, and every stiff now associated with the program will be applying for jobs with the local YMCA Flag Football team.

Let's put this one here:
Anyone who knows me knows of my man love for Colin Cowherd. Right now, he's the single most important male role model in my life.
Anyone who listens to Him knows that about once or twice a week he gives us a nice dissertation on UM football.
Today, he did not dissapoint.
He talked abou the new "flexibility" in Lloyd's contract, and talked about the deterioration in UM football under Lloyd. he talked about UM's recruiting going south. AND THEN, he does what he always does to wrap it up: Says that when UM gets serious about a coach, they will go right to the top of the college football world.
Cowherd guesses that the next coach after Lloyd will be: Les Miles.
I say fuck Rojo. Let him go. When UM and Lloyd decide to exercise the new fangled "flexibility" (something, as Cowherd pointed out, that Pete Carroll or jim Tressell do NOT have), they'll bring in a good coach, a great coach, and the recruits will FLOCK to Ann Arbor.
Even your most strident UM haters (I know guys, the world is FULL of them, from Beano Cook to Morley Safer) know and understand the potential of Michigan Football.
I would be very nervous if I were any team in the Big 10 not located in Ann Arbor right now. Michigan needs to, and hopefully realizes that need, to REASSERT it's rightful place in the pantheon of college football greatness.
The clock is ticking. The streamers are being put up. The Gold Watch is being ordered. The retirement party is being planned.
And a New Day is on the horizon for Michigan Football.
I can hardly wait for next season's bowl flop to be over.

I defy you dickheads to find one thing wrong with that post. Everyone knows Lloyd wanted DeBord to replace him. Lloyd was duly impressed with DeBord's tenure at Central Michigan. Hell, without DeBord, over those four years CMU might have gone 11-35 instead of 12-34.

I already told you what the one thing with just reading it once was wrong.

Not everyone associated with the program has to find jobs. Some coaches will be kept.

Hell even Gittleson will be kept (he is tenured professor), just in a much smaller role.

Art, you're not gonna get me on some technicality like an assistant or two keeping his job. Nor are you gonna get me on Gittleson. I think overall, that post was dead on, and in fact, Cogent as hell.
