Another injured star.

Redd's out for 4-6 weeks.

Spurs interested in swingmen Maggette and MoPete.

Cavs interested in Boykins and Anthony Johnson

Atlantic Division blows ass

Lakers are an amazing 23-11 with Kobe leading the way without Odom and Kwame Brown.

BIG ASS TRADE COMING?

Blazers are shopping their bigs including Randolph, who's having a great year and Jamaal Magloire who has done shit so far.

Rumored trade?

Blazers send Jamaal Magliore
Blazers receive Salim Stoudemire, Esteban Batista, and Lorenzen Wright

Wiz send Haywood and Jarvis Hayes
Wiz receive Jamaal Magloire

Hawks send Salim, Esteben Batista and Lorenzen Wright
Hawks receive Haywood and Hayes

Blazers should be sending Magloire out to help develop Aldridge, but are receving another center...

Regarding Randolph...

Forget Randolph as well

Not Portland's Zach Randolph either, though he is averaging 24 points and 10.3 rebounds.

Despite being listed at only 6 feet 9 inches, he might be the best true low-post scorer who can play with his back to the basket. The Knicks' Eddy Curry continues to make his case for that title, with back-to-back 27-point games in Seattle and Portland. But the Bulls had him. They've moved on.

Despite what the Trail Blazers might say, they'd love to move Randolph. Some believe Bulls coach Scott Skiles could get through to him. They're both from Indiana and went to Michigan State. Skiles has tried to help Randolph over the years through Spartans coach Tom Izzo.

But it would be a heck of a risk, and probably too big of a contract for the Bulls to take on with Luol Deng, Ben Gordon and Andres Nocioni up for extensions after this season. Randolph has five years left at almost $15 million a year. The rebuilding Trail Blazers might take young players and expiring contracts. And they're near the bottom of the league again, so why not?

Last week was more of the same for Randolph. He was benched in a fourth quarter, got into an angry exchange with coach Nate McMillan over yet another laggard practice effort and had another off-court incident in which a visiting friend was arrested for drunken driving while in Randolph's car. The friend also allegedly had Randolph's handgun and had been waving it around at a club.

I think we need to have an around the nba thread for every month

Kind of old news but we havent talked about this yet

A source claims the Knicks and Steve Francis - exiled to Houston supposedly to rehab a tender knee - are discussing a contract buyout; what remains of this season's $15 million salary and the next two, $16.44M and $17.8M.
Actually, that in itself is not all that weird, or scarcely surprising considering Maurice Taylor and Jalen Rose already have taken that route, and Francis is a duplication of Stephon Marbury. At least two columns, maybe three, were committed to condemning the acquisition of Francis the week leading up to the exchange of the expiring pact of Penny Hardaway and Trevor (eight straight double-figure scoring efforts for the Magic) Ariza.

Everybody and his rollers recognized Francis didn't qualify as a lid to the Knicks' pot. Everybody, that is, except Thomas, and by the looks of things, Brown too, which I queasily admit is news to me.

A seamless segue to the perfectly peculiar part of this latest development: According to the same source, stage two of Francis' buyout conversation, coordinated by agent Jeff Fried, is dialogue with Brown about his client joining the 76ers after he clears waivers.

PUTTING THE 'W' IN WEIRD NO ROOM: With Stephon Marbury (right) entrenched in the Knicks' starting lineup, Steve Francis (left) has nowhere to play and may be headed out of town, Peter Vecsey says.
January 9, 2007 -- I KNOW what you're thinking: It doesn't get any more bizarre.

Here are Isiah Thomas' 15-21 Knicks returning to Madison Square Garden tomorrow from a 2-3 road trip, with Nate Robinson back on active duty following a 10-game suspension, and the first callers are the 76ers, whose newly-appointed executive VP is none other than archenemy Larry (Gurney) Brown.

Weird is today's operative theme, that's for sure.

And a case can be made the weirdest part is that Brown has exhausted his lifetime supply of original next towns to frolic hither and yon. So, the former 76ers president/coach (a six-year tour; forever and a day in his tight travel schedule) is forced to bolt to the same places all over again.

However, that argument is invalid. You want ultimate weirdness, see how this grabs you: A source claims the Knicks and Steve Francis - exiled to Houston supposedly to rehab a tender knee - are discussing a contract buyout; what remains of this season's $15 million salary and the next two, $16.44M and $17.8M.

Actually, that in itself is not all that weird, or scarcely surprising considering Maurice Taylor and Jalen Rose already have taken that route, and Francis is a duplication of Stephon Marbury. A seamless segue to the perfectly peculiar part of this latest development: According to the same source, stage two of Francis' buyout conversation, coordinated by agent Jeff Fried, is dialogue with Brown about his client joining the 76ers after he clears waivers.

Say it ain't so! For months I've maintained "Play the game the right way" Brown never would've endorsed such procurement, much less initiated it. Has Billy King seconded this motion? If so, does that mean he's back under the influence of Brown and no longer in charge? If not, is the Sixers president aware of the talk? That's just what David Stern needs, another team management matter to arbitrate.

Brown is responsible for putting the "W" in weird.

via nypost.

Why on earth would Billy King want this?

Even for the league minimum, they already got Andre Miller and Louis Williams who is very raw. Hell they still got Kevin Ollie and Willie Green as well.

Unless they are looking to trade Andre, who's playing well, I dont see why Billy King would do this...

Zekyl
01-10-2007, 01:19 PM
They don't have to trade Andre. Andre would play point, Francis would play shooting guard and back up some point when needed. They may already have Andre and AI2 but if you've got a chance to add a potential top talent, do it.

The reason why Francis is frustrated in NY is so he can play his natural position, point guard.

I would hate to be a Celtics fan right now. Pierce, Delonte West, Wally, and now Allen.

One of the better players on that team, Tony Allen's out for the reason of the season.

Boston Celtics guard Tony Allen will miss the rest of the season with two torn ligaments in his left knee.

Coach Doc Rivers said Thursday that Allen will be out at least six months. Allen hurt the knee when he landed awkwardly after an uncontested dunk in the final minutes of a 97-84 loss to Indiana on Wednesday.

Rivers said Allen "was not in good spirits" when he spoke with him earlier Thursday.

"As a coach, you can be emotional, but you still have to function," Rivers said. "He came to believe he could be a great player in this league and now he has to start over again."

The Celtics have already lost leading scorer Paul Pierce, out since Dec. 20 with a stress fracture in his left foot. Forward Wally Szczerbiak is out at least a week because of ankle injuries and guard Delonte West is out with a sore back.

Center Theo Ratliff is out for the season with a back injury.

That was really retarded of him to dunk it AFTER the whistle was blown but he came down really badly.

And it really is a shame, he needs to start over

I saw the replay, and I just dont see how you blow a knee out doing that. I could kinda dunk with a mini ball for about four years of my life, and in no way was I ever remotely close to blowing out a knee by just... jumping. How do you blow your knee out... jumping. Gotta be a special guy to pull that off. Regardless of how athletic you are, you dont blow a knee out... jumping.

Shaq back soon?

MIAMI (AP) -- Shaquille O'Neal has vowed not to resume playing for the Miami Heat until his surgically repaired left knee is "1,000 percent."

He's almost there.

O'Neal went through an entire practice on Wednesday, his first time playing full-court, five-on-five since the Nov. 19 procedure to repair torn cartilage. And he could make his comeback Thursday, when the Heat host the Indiana Pacers.

"We'll see where I'm at in the morning, how I feel and make a decision," O'Neal said.

O'Neal has missed 33 of Miami's 37 games this season -- and, largely because they've been without O'Neal, the defending NBA champions have a sluggish 17-20 record. But the Heat haven't had their full team together at any point this season, either.

With O'Neal on the cusp of returning, that's about to change.

"He did full contact, full workout, up and down, did everything everybody did," Heat interim coach Ron Rothstein said. "This is the first time, full-team, five-on-five, up-and-down. It went good. He's got a ways to go yet, but it was encouraging."

Looking fit and considerably lighter -- Heat guard Jason Kapono said O'Neal's oft-scrutinized weight is currently 235 pounds, which is probably about 90 pounds away from reality -- the 13-time All-Star center ran the floor well and was his customary physical self during practice, teammates said.

If O'Neal returns on Thursday, he could face what may be a depleted Indiana roster. The Pacers swung an eight-player trade with Golden State on Wednesday afternoon, sending Al Harrington, Stephen Jackson, Sarunas Jasikevicius and Josh Powell to the Warriors for Troy Murphy, Mike Dunleavy, Ike Diogu and Keith McLeod, and it's unknown if any of the new Indiana players will be in Miami and ready to play Thursday night.

Yet potential matchups are truly secondary to the Heat right now. They simply want to see O'Neal back on the floor.

"He looked good," backup center Earl Barron said. "He was banging around. His strength, his mobility, the way he was moving, it all looked real good."

And for the first time this season, so does the Heat's medical report.

Miami has endured a litany of physical issues so far this year. Point guard Jason Williams was slowed while he recovered from offseason knee surgery. Reigning NBA finals MVP Dwyane Wade has missed some time with a sprained wrist, forwards James Posey and Antoine Walker were deactivated earlier this month because they didn't meet a team-mandated body fat standard, and coach Pat Riley is out indefinitely while recovering from knee surgery and a hip replacement.

"If I had to pick a part of the season where we would falter, it'd be the beginning," center Alonzo Mourning said.

With O'Neal set to return, it will only help Miami's fortunes, which seem to already be changing.

Wade has recovered from his wrist problem and led Miami to a 4-1 record in the final five games of its Western swing. Posey and Walker are back in the fray, and Riley's recovery is reportedly going well.

Getting O'Neal back will, eventually, send Mourning back to reserve status -- something he'll apparently embrace.

"Trust me, I'm anxiously awaiting him to come back," Mourning said. "But I want him to come back right ... and for the long haul, for the rest of the year."

That's O'Neal's plan too, which is why he's being cautious. With 45 regular-season games left, he doesn't see the sense in returning before the knee is truly ready.

"I'm very anxious to be out there with the guys," O'Neal said. "But I want to be at 1,000 percent so I can help them and not slow down the process."

Some shit about Melo

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Carmelo Anthony, the suspended Denver Nuggets star who led the U.S. team at the world championships, was chosen Tuesday as USA Basketball's male athlete of the year.

Anthony averaged 19.9 points on a team that won a bronze medal in Japan. He scored a U.S.-record 35 points in a victory over Italy during pool play.

After a disappointing stint with the U.S. team at the 2004 Olympics, Anthony joined LeBron James and Dwyane Wade as captains of the team in the worlds. He was was the only American chosen to the all-tournament team.

"Carmelo was on a mission to make our team and he did much more than that, he led our team," USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo said. "He had a terrific summer with the USA team and demonstrated his overall basketball talents and his leadership. In my mind he is deserving and a great choice for this award."

Anthony, the NBA scoring leader, is serving a 15-game suspension for his role in a brawl against the New York Knicks last month

Kwame jacked a cake...

"Lakers center Kwame Brown isn't a exactly league leader in steals, but he allegedly scored one sweet takeaway in Hermosa Beach over the weekend.

No matter how you slice it, Brown, known for small hands that occasionally fumble passes on the basketball court, enjoyed a real cakewalk Saturday, according to a police report. For reasons only he knows (and he's not talking) Brown allegedly snatched a man's $190 2-by-2-foot chocolate birthday cake.

Once he had the cake, Brown opted not to eat it, too. He instead allegedly hurled it at the man and struck him in the back.
Several Lakers headed to the bar following their 109-106 victory over the Orlando Magic on Friday, according to a Hermosa Beach police report. Just down the street, Alexander Martinez, the man who filed the report, was celebrating his 30th birthday at the Shore Restaurant.

About 1:45 a.m. Martinez left the restaurant, his birthday cake in his arms, and walked north. He stopped in front of Blue 32. According to Martinez's report, Brown came along, grabbed the cake out of his arms and threw it at him. The report gives no indication why Brown would do such a thing.

The 5-foot-9, 165-pound Martinez, tried to confront the 6-foot-11, 270-pound Brown, but Brown got into a white limousine, the report said.

Twelve hours later Martinez visited the Hermosa Beach police station to file a police report on the purloined pastry.

Detectives looked into a possible case of grand theft and presented it to the Hermosa Beach city prosecutor, who decided to throw the case out."

The NBA office was not happy to read about Corinne Grousbeck, wife of managing partner Wyc Grousbeck, bringing a group of women into the Celtics dressing room to get autographs following Friday’s loss to Sacramento. The matter is being handled by the team, but an NBA spokesman said the league would step in if the scene is repeated.
In addition to the fact that some players were trying to conduct interviews, others were getting dressed and being asked to sign items amid the giggling. . . .

Brandon Roy and Randy Foye had huge games. I picked Foye to win ROY and the way he played tonight was excellent considering both KG and Davis didn't play. If he can keep it up, who knows.

Jan 21 Roy had a career-high 28 points to help Portland beat Milwaukee 99-95 on Sunday night. He went 10-for-15 from the field and grabbed 10 rebounds, narrowly missing his second double-double in the last three games.

Jan 21 Playing without Kevin Garnett and Ricky Davis, Foye stepped up in Minnesota's 131-102 loss to Phoenix on Sunday, matching his career-high with 25 points and hitting 5-of-6 from the 3-point line. The seventh overall pick from Villanova, Foye has seen his minutes increase in recent weeks and is averaging 14.8 points over his last five games.

Sonics' Watson might sit out
Point guard hampered by bruised shoulder

By GARY WASHBURN
P-I REPORTER

A short practice for the Sonics did not go without intrigue Wednesday at the Furtado Center. Seattle guard Earl Watson is listed as questionable for Friday's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves with a bruised right shoulder.

Watson, who was injured during a spill while driving to the basket in the first half of the Sonics' loss to Denver on Tuesday, underwent an MRI exam on Wednesday morning; the results are expected today.

The Sonics have played well with Watson as a starter, averaging 106.1 points in the seven games since coach Bob Hill adjusted the lineup Jan. 6 against Golden State.

Also, the team's assist-to-turnover ratio is 1.83-1 in that span compared with 1.34-1 for the season.

"Earl has been playing well," Hill said. "Ever since I have put him in the lineup, the ball has just been moving. When the ball moves and everybody gets touches, the defense gets better because everyone feels a part of the game. Everything revolves around that (darn) leather ball."

i watched a ton of nba basketball tonight, and here are my quick hits:

nugs/jazz: one of the most fun regular season games i've ever seen. really good. its a joke how much better the west is than the east (in both style and substance). if you dont like nba basketball, its probably cuz you watch to much EC and not enough WC.

toronto / boston: toronto is a very fun team, also. WC build. i see this team as an up and comer, and if i had a gun to my head and i had to pick the next nba champ from the EC, i might go with the raptors.

lakers/cats: andrew bynum is completely overlooked. is this kid even 20?!? the players i'd trade him for are not many. i like him better than emeka okeafor. also, the lakers probably wont, but they could win it all this year. i thought they could sneak into the finals last year, which was ridiculous, but now i think its legit. they are very, very solid. they should pick up a big pg, ala ron harper, though. maybe they should steal marko from us.

Pretty much agree with what you said diddy. I only saw the highlights from the den/utah game and they were all sweet. Lot of talent in that game. Toronto is built well, they just havent quite put it together yet. Dont know if I would say next EC ring holder, partial to Detroit, but they are close to being very good. Bynum has so much potential, I agree he can be much better than Okeafor. Kind of amuses me how they have put together a working mans team aside from Kobe, since the workin mans team whupped them in the finals a couple years ago. Turiaf was a steal for them in the draft, I know he hasnt done a whole lot in the NBA but he was the definition of monster at Gonzaga and his heart condition appears to be fine now. I remember watching him at Gonzaga, and thinking his type of play is exactly what would piss me off on a court.

several injuries to big names.

Already playing without forward Andrei Kirilenko (sprained right ankle), the Utah Jazz lost leading scorer Carlos Boozer to a bruised left knee in the first quarter of the team's loss to the Hornets.

Boozer knocked knees with the Hornets' Tyson Chandler as Chandler went up to catch a lob with 8:11 left in the first quarter

This might hurt his chances of consideration for MVP.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Jazz starting forward Andrei Kirilenko was inactive for Utah's game against the New Orleans Hornets on Saturday after spraining his right ankle the previous night.

Jazz coach Jerry Sloan didn't have a prognosis for when Kirilenko might return, although the 6-foot-9 forward did make the trip to Oklahoma City. He missed five games after spraining the same ankle in November, with the Jazz winning all five.

Kirilenko, eighth in the NBA in blocks, Kirilenko was hurt while trying for a block on Denver's Marcus Camby in the second quarter of Utah's 116-111 win Friday night.

Kirilenko, who was chosen to the NBA's all-defensive first team last season, is averaging 9.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and two blocks per game this season. All are below his averages from last season, when he missed seven games with a sprained right ankle.

He averaged 15.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.1 blocks in 2005-06.

The Hornets, meanwhile, are hoping to get a starter back from a sprained right ankle soon as reigning rookie of the year Chris Paul is expected to return to practice for the Hornets on Tuesday after missing a month with the injury.

"He is so eager to get back on the court and just try it. I think that's the biggest thing," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "Tuesday we'll have him practice and see how he does."

Paul walked through dribbling drills, weaving back and forth on the Ford Center floor, before the Jazz game. The point guard has been out since Dec. 26, when he came down on Seattle center Johan Petro's foot and suffered a Grade 3 sprain -- the worst possible.

"The thing with him right now that's so crazy is at every shootaround he wants to go five-on-five," Scott said.

Paul was averaging a team-high 18.4 points and nine assists before he was hurt.

Big Ben, again, out with another injury.

Chicago defeated Miami 100-97 to win its third straight, but in the process lost center Ben Wallace to a left knee sprain with 5:01 remaining.

I hate the order you posted those Cross. I read the Boozer injury and thought Ak47 might have a chance to step up. Then I was left down by the next part of your post.

Reportedly, Eric Snow has lost his starting PG job with the Cavs. They are apparently going with Daniel Gibson starting tonight.

LeBron to sit out Tuesday, listed as day-to-day

ESPN.com news services

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James, who is nursing a sore right big toe, will not play Tuesday against the Golden State Warriors, the team announced.

James, who injured the toe a few weeks ago and aggravated it agaisnt the Phoenix Suns on Sunday, said Monday he would consider sitting out Cleveland's next few games to rest the injury.

James said Monday that a few days off would do his toe wonders.

"It would help," he said. "I don't like sitting down. I don't like not being able to give something to my teammates. Being out in street clothes, I hate that feeling. I feel like I'm leaving my teammates out on an island.

"Right now, it's an injury where you go out there and keep reinjuring it. You've got to be smart and it's something I've really got to think about. ... Long term, it would be smart if I took some games off and some practices off, honestly, to get better."

X-rays and an MRI taken last week revealed no structural damage to James' toe. But as a precaution, he sat out Friday's game and the Cavaliers beat the Sixers.

"It's bruised on top and sprained inside the ligament," James said. "It's nagging and something I haven't had in a long time. It's something I have to work at every day and get as much rest as possible.

"It's going to nag on and nag on if you keep playing on it."

James' toe injury is coming at a bad time for the Cavaliers, who are playing their worst ball this season. Cleveland has lost three straight at home and dropped seven of 10 overall. After having the Eastern Conference's best record for much of the season's first half, the Cavs have slipped in the standings. If playoffs started tomorrow, Cleveland would be the No. 5 seed.

What a crock of shit!!!! 1 - You should be rewarded for hitting Ginobli (bonus points for the face or crotch) and 2 - Kobe got run into after the shot and his arms were flailing to regain his balance.

I agree. I really don't think Kobe was trying to do that. I think he was just trying to draw the foul. And if you get suspended for attempting to draw a foul, then Manu should be suspended for most of the season. That's extremely athletic if he was trying to hit him, though.

Kobe must have called Stern and told him he had other plans tonight or something.

I think Kobe is clearly trying to make contact with Manu. I think the thought process in the suspension is that the motives for that contact are irrelevant. He tried to make contact with Ginobili and his doing so ended up hitting him pretty hard. Kind of the same rationale as the guy swinging his elbows to clear off opponents after he gets a rebound. Sure he's not trying to jack someone in the jaw, but he's intentionally acting in a way that can cause damage.

Just more of the whole "don't touch each other while playing" bullshit that's going on now. I'm not mad Kobe is sitting though.

lol, it looked to me like Kobe knew exactly what he was doing and destroyed Ginobili.....

According to a Bergen (N.J.) Record report Saturday citing unidentified "sources," New Jersey has offered to trade All-Star Vince Carter to the Jazz for forward Andrei Kirilenko.

Jazz basketball boss Kevin O'Connor and Jazz coach Jerry Sloan both have made it abundantly clear they have no plans to deal Kirilenko, an All-Star in 2004.

Still, Kirilenko — who doesn't appear interested in leaving Utah, either — seemed flattered the Nets supposedly were willing to part with a player of Carter's caliber in an effort to obtain him.

I thought I read yesterday that the Jazz flatly denied being offered Wince Harter for AK47?

Are they backpedaling now or is this a faulty report?

Bryant Suspended for Striking Ginobili
By Associated Press

NEW YORK - Kobe Bryant requested an "immediate hearing" with the NBA office to discuss the one-game suspension he was given earlier Tuesday for striking San Antonio's Manu Ginobili in the face.

Bryant was to miss Tuesday's game against the New York Knicks, leaving the Lakers without their leading scorer when they opened an eight-game road trip.

However, since Bryant was already in New York, he was still hoping for a chance to play.

"I've been waiting to play here, it's always been a fun place for me to play here, and I'm surprised. Shocked, by it, actually," Bryant said. "I unintentionally caught Manu Ginobili. What do you say, it's a basketball game. You unintentionally catch people with elbows every once in a while."

Players association spokesman Dan Wasserman said a letter was sent on Bryant's behalf to the league office requesting the hearing, and that Bryant volunteered to review the videotape and talk to commissioner David Stern or the "appropriate league official."

"I'm blown away by it, I really am," Bryant said. "It just makes no sense."

Executive vice president of operations Stu Jackson is responsible for handing out the penalties for on-court actions.

"It's just unintentional," Bryant said. "I felt horrible about it. It's just basketball, it happens."

The incident occurred with 2.7 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter of the Lakers' 96-94 overtime loss to the Spurs on Sunday.

Bryant is averaging 28.4 points, 5.5 assists and 5.4 rebounds.

Manu gets a real hit (as opposed to that casual contact that he flops for) and totally cries for the camera, even as he made the fucking shot. Do his balls grow or shrink in that context?

Injury Update for Carlos Boozer

SALT LAKE CITY (January 31, 2007) – The Utah Jazz announced today that a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and additional x-rays revealed a hairline fracture in Carlos Boozer’s left fibula head. Jazz physician Dr. Lyle Mason treated Boozer and identified the hairline fracture, which was then confirmed by a second opinion. Injuries of this nature typically take four to five weeks to fully heal.

The injury was suffered at the 8:11 mark of the first quarter of Saturday night’s game at the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets in Oklahoma City.

At least the All Star break will buy him a few days, but Paul Millsap is about to break out and grab the ROY.

Harrington to have surgery on left knee

Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte Bobcats reserve center Othella Harrington will undergo surgery Thursday to repair torn cartilage in his left knee and is expected to miss three-to-six weeks.

Harrington, sidelined four of the past five games, is averaging 2.7 points and 1.7 rebounds in less than nine minutes per game.

The news was better for forward Sean May, who has missed six of the past eight games with a sore right knee, but tests showed a bone bruise and no structural damage.

May, who missed most of last season after undergoing two surgeries on the same knee, is out indefinitely. The 2005 first-round pick is averaging 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds.
