An explanation on Rose
Before the rumor mill churns out of control, nobody should be leaping to conclusions about what Jalen Rose said Sunday. Like I wrote, you never know when Jalen is pulling your leg. But he did intimate that the door wasn't closed on him coming home and being a Piston -- perhaps even this year. That may be what Jalen wants, it may not be what the Pistons want -- at least not at this time.
Pistons president Joe Dumars isn't ready to make any roster changes right now. Early reports are that Chauncey Billups could be back earlier than the 14-day prognosis. More will be known after Billups has an MRI Tuesday. So, everything is status quo right now. There is no urgency for the Pistons to make roster moves.
And let me say this -- Dumars would never trade a prospect like Amir Johnson for a player nearing the end of his career like Rose. I didn't mean to suggest he ever would. I threw Johnson's name in there, with Flip Murray's and a draft pick just to show a range of players that would match Rose's $1.86 million contract.
There has been no specific trade talk between the Suns and the Pistons -- OK? Clear? Rose doesn't want to end the season anchored to the bench in Phoenix. He wants to play and compete and maybe earn himself another contract for next season. No question he would like to come home and play. But, right now, that is just his dream. Which is why he planted that little "never say never" seed Sunday. Could it happen? Sure. Is it in the works right now? No.
Happy New Year....
