Game 29: Detroit Pistons vs. Phoenix Suns
TV: FSN Detroit; Radio: WDFN 1130 AM - The Fan
Sunday, December 31, 2006
The Palace of Auburn Hills - Auburn Hills, MI
Probable Starters | Game Notes | Injury Report | Tix
The skinny: Two-time MVP Steve Nash is having an even better season in his third year with the Suns, averaging 20 points, 11.3 assists and shooting better than 50 percent (.527 overall, an astounding .515 from the arc). Amare Stoudemire isn’t all the way back, but he’s getting stronger. Leandro Barbosa has come a long way in three years and gives Phoenix 16.6 points off the bench. The Suns are highly efficient - their .495 shooting percentage is tops in the league and their scoring differential of plus-7.3 is second only to San Antonio.
What to watch: Well, duh - who plays point guard, and how well, so the Pistons can figure out how they can best survive the two weeks (or however long) without Chauncey Billups. This will be baptism by fire for Will Blalock and Flip Murray, because controlling tempo against Phoenix is critical. If it turns into a Suns kind of game - a 120-point pace - the results aren’t likely to be pretty. The Pistons have to prepare themselves for Phoenix’s relentless pick-and-roll game that Nash executes masterfully.
