View Full Version : McCosky plays around with a Pistons-Clippers trade idea
Zekyl 12-20-2006, 09:24 AM Musings on Maggette
Corey Maggette has been on my mind lately, which is frightening. But, given how Flip Murray 's role is developing in Detroit, and given Maggette's fervent desire to be out of Clipperland, it seems to me he would look pretty darn good in a Pistons uniform.
Now, before this takes on a life of its own, there has been no discussion between Joe Dumars and the Clippers that I am aware of. Dumars has never mentioned Maggette in any context. Dumars hasn't even really mentioned that he was looking to make a trade -- and right now, I am sure he isn't.
This is just me thinking -- always a dangerous thing and I try to avoid it as much as possible. But Maggette makes $7 million this year, $7.8 next year and has a player option for $8.4 million the following year. He isn't cheap. The Pistons, who aren't going to move any of their four main starters, would have to part with either Antonio McDyess or Nazr Mohammed , plus Murray and Carlos Delfino , to make it work.
Although this is highly unlikely, I wouldn't mind seeing it. They probably wouldn't just take Nazr and Flip for Maggette, and I don't want to give up McDyess. I'd prefer to keep Delfino to see how he develops, although if we pick up Maggette he's never going to get any minutes so that may be pointless. Maybe we could give them Nazr, Flip, and next years first rounder (I'd rather not give up one from this year). We could plug Dale as the starting center and Sheed would have to play center more, opening up more minutes for Max to play and develop. Never going to happen, but its a nice thought.
Another idea that worked out in the trade machine, Nazr, Flip, and Delfino for Maggette and Paul Davis. If Joe decides we need another PG, we can toss Daniel Ewing into the deal and it still works. I don't know much about Ewing, but I loved Davis when he was with MSU. Possible center of the future, and I'd make that deal in a heartbeat.
Uncle Mxy 12-20-2006, 09:45 AM Maggette's injury-prone and has low basketball IQ. The Clippers have historically won more without him in the lineup.
FlipM for Paul Davis would rock my world, though.
Glenn 12-20-2006, 10:12 AM Paul Davis is as soft as cotton http://mulibraries.missouri.edu/mulsa/muse/musev52no4/muse200603pic11.JPG Mad Max would make him his bitch, prison style.
Maggette's got talent, no doubt, but he's injury prone and the opposite of a gamer, IMO.
Zekyl 12-20-2006, 01:17 PM I'd rather just go Flip for Davis, too, but the salaries don't match. Maggette could fill the slasher off the bench role that Flip hasn't shown the ability to do. If Delfino could do it, I'd gladly give him the spot instead, but that just doesn't seem like the type of player he is. Maggette is a "take it to the rim" guy, Delfino is a "setup" guy, and Flip is a "fucking moron" guy.
Uncle Mxy 12-20-2006, 04:21 PM We have a trade exception.
I think Delfino's being badly coached. Delfino's supposed to be the slasher, so don't make him a spot-up shooter. That's how Larry Brown used him in 2005 and it worked well until his knee blew.
Paul Davis didn't strike me as especially soft. Slow, sure, but not soft. I'd just like to fix our future at C, because right now "maybe Amir could play C" and "maybe Orlando's pick will be a lottery" isn't giving me warm and fuzzies.
Higherwarrior 12-20-2006, 05:16 PM yeah delfino is definitely not being used properly, or he's not playing to his own strengths.
he should be driving to the hoop 7 out of 10 times. he would be much more effective if he did that and i think many would have a much better opinion of him. he has a lot more talent than he has been able to show thus far....
mercury 12-20-2006, 06:25 PM He's been doing a lot of slashing lately... just not getting anything done.
Black Dynamite 12-20-2006, 06:39 PM Maggette is a "take it to the rim" guy, Delfino is a "setup" guy, and Flip is a "fucking moron" guy.
Damn I laughed myself into damn near a coma at that.[smilie=llama_banan:
McCoskey is doing bad NBA math which isn't shocking since he never looked at the CBA.
Maggette makes 7 million so all we need to send back in terms of salary is 75% min or 5.25 million or a max of 8.75 million to satisfy the within 25% rule.
That means Nazr and Dice alone can make a deal possible, that may not be enough in terms of return for Corey but a deal is plausible and a lot less complicated.
Zekyl 12-20-2006, 09:30 PM Yeah, I saw that when I was messing with the trade machine, but I they wouldn't take just Nazr for Corey, and I have no problem losing Flip. Basically, we signed him to play the spot we wanted Delfino to develop into.

I agree. My point I guess is if Joe wants Corey Maggette is a real possibility, we have 2 picks which according to "experts" are very valuable regardless of draft position do to the projected depth of the upcoming draft. Also Flip is a solid enough player who can bring decent value.
Philly is looking to get rid of salary, so what I might do is try a 3-way deal with them and LA to get back a decent C with Maggette. Such as we send our 1.5 million TE and a second to Philly for Steven Hunter, Nazr and Flip to LAC with a conditional first, The Clips send Rebraca and Williams to Philly, Maggette to Detroit.
The deal gives LA some more quality depth and a pick to use to improve themselves in the draft or by the deadline. Philly gets back expring deals and a second they can use to move up in the draft, so it helps their rebuilding.
For us it gives us a cheaper C with similar attributes and numbers and a solid enough 6th man that stabilizes the team beyond this year. The big question though is would LAC see the pick and two vets as enough for a huge talent but injury prone player?
Higherwarrior 12-21-2006, 07:24 PM we need to trade flip yesterday. seriously i think it's clear he's not working out.
we had better make some sort of deal by the deadline because it is a waste keeping him around IMO. he just doesn't fit. one minute he's great the next he's AWFUL.
Glenn 12-26-2006, 10:19 AM Blakely's thoughts on Maggette, and now it's his turn to play with the ESPN Trade Machine
Sorry folks, No Corey Maggette packages under the tree for you!
It seems a few of you might have mistaken me for the jolly fat white guy who delivers presents this time of year. A good number of you have given me your wish list of future Pistons, with the majority wanting to see Corey Maggette gift-wrapped in a Detroit uniform real soon.
Well, I hate to disappoint anyone this time of year, but I just don’t see that happening.
Some of you have mentioned how Maggette would be a nice fit on this team.
Having covered Duke basketball around the time he was there, I’ve known this kid for a while.
Knowing him the way I do, and knowing this Pistons team ... this is a union that would not work.
He’s unhappy in Clippersville because he’s not playing as much as he believes he should.
Is that going to change in Detroit?
Not unless they get rid of Tayshaun Prince, which I don’t believe the Pistons would be willing to do.
And when you look at his contract, that becomes yet another reason for this to not work.
He makes $7 million now, $7.84 next season and another $8.4 after that if he chooses not to opt out.
That’s a lot of coin for a backup shooting guard/small forward who is probably going to play maybe 20 or so minutes, and do it begrudgingly.
A more likely deal I could see going down closer to the trading deal is a straight-up swap of Flip Murray for Bonzi Wells. It’s no secret that the Pistons have loved Bonzi for quite some time now. If he would have opted out of the final year of his contract in Sacramento, Detroit was prepared to offer him a multi-year deal worth more than $30 million. And this summer, had Ben Wallace returned to Detroit, a similar deal to the one the Pistons offered Nazr Mohammed, would have been there for Wells to take. It’s pretty clear that Murray’s just not working out in Detroit, and Bonzi’s issues in Houston have been well-documented as well. There’s nothing to do this right now, but like I said earlier, do not be shocked if talks begin to heat up as we move closer to the Feb. 22 trading deadline.
Glenn 12-26-2006, 10:29 AM How about Bonzi & Battier for Flip, Dale's expiring deal, and one of our 1st round picks? Throw in Delfino if need be.
edit: WOTM
edit2: Dice could even be swapped in for Davis and either Delfino or Flip
DrRay11 12-26-2006, 11:58 AM No, Glenn, we need to stop giving away first rounders, IMO.

My original reply to this went off into a new tangent, so I split it off into a new thread: http://wtfdetroit.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7946
Uncle Mxy 12-26-2006, 12:18 PM I'd love to get Battier in a Pistons uniform, but I can't see Van Gundy giving him up for contract relief.

You are probably right, but with the Yao injury (and injuries to Kristic, Bosh, Murphy, R.Swift, Ratliff, Mihm, and even Shaq) it's a great time to have extra bigs that can be dealt.
DrRay11 12-26-2006, 12:34 PM Well, I didn't mean for such a response, but I do feel that we're going to want youth soon in case Chauncey goes (Sheed's getting old, and perhaps injury prone (see ankle)). Anyhow, who says the Rockets would want to rebuild by dealing away Battier and Bonzi for Flip, Dale, and a pick? Flip likely would leave, and they'd be left with the pick when it seems that, with Yao and McGrady, they're trying to get a championship when they're healthy. Furk.
Black Dynamite 12-26-2006, 04:04 PM bonzi for Flip and move delfino to the SG. Cool!!!

Dale/Dyess/Nazr to Boston for a PG or wing?
Luther Head for Dale Davis?
Nazr, Fino, and a First for Battier and Bonzi?
Nazr and Fino for Battier and Head?
etc.

Battier has always wanted to be in a Pistons uniform as well..
There is no way that Head gets traded. With T-Mac out, Head is doing a good job of covering up
