watch the media gloss over this as if nothing happened. I know that people in the stands weren't involved, but the fight was pretty large and it seemed the guy doing the highlights was trying to downplay it. We'll see on sportscenter tonight i guess.

melo is a punk. he throws a sucker punch and then runs away. the whole time he's backing away! how do you justify that, especially when things were beginning to get back under control.

it's like he was determined to get in a cheap shot, no matter what.

well, thanks a lot to these 2 stupid teams. knowing stern, he's now going to crack down EVEN MORE on any sort of player reactions and fouls.

now anytime you foul somebody and it's not incidental contact, it will probably be an automatic ejection and a 10 game suspension. *rolleyes*

WTF is the deal with Nate Robinson?

And Melo would've gotten his ass beat by Jeffries if he didn't have a dozen people holding him down.

Nate Robinson threw his hands up like he was in the middle of a gang fight. I would love to see Nate Robinson and Carmelo both get about 25 games, give or take a few. I'm sure with Carmelo being the leading scorer David Stern will go easy on him and give him maybe 8 games.

I'm waiting for them to use it as an excuse to show the Palace brawl fifty more times.

David Stern is probably throwing his weight around trying to get ESPN to limit the coverage, I mean they aren't showing the clip on continous loop with super duper slo mo like they did for the palace situation. Plus their isn't a clever naming scheme available like Malice at the Palace. Although since both teams aren't being crucified the Pardon at the Garden seems fitting.

Obviously the Palace situation was worse because the fans got involved. However I wouldn't be surprised if the suspension for escalating the issue are heavy and swift. I mean everything died down then Robinson and Melo started the shit back up.

much ado about nothing. this wasnt 1/10 the palace. if anything, i think its getting overblown. this sort of thing wouldnt have even showed up on the radar in the 90's when the knicks/heat rivalry was a good one.

only good thing about this was seeing carmelo run like a bitch. you know thats why he was so upset after the game. he'll get 5, and had he not ran it might have been a season, but he'll never live down running away from jeffries. im not sure he'll ever be the same player again.

My only problem with Nate-Rob was that, instead of restraining Mardy Collins (who ended up doing nothing), he went over to verbally abuse JR Smith, which was retarded and could only escalate the fight. JR Smith, who was restrained by David Lee, then broke free and tried to tackle Nate, who fuckin' owned his weak ass.

Oh, and Carmelo is a huge pussy and I'm glad the Nuggets were exposed as the bunch of bitches they really are. Fuck the Nuggets.

You are right that in the 90's this was no big deal. However I think in Fuhrer Stern's image first NBA it has to be a big deal. The backlash from the Palace situation had 30% to do with Fan conduct and 70% to do with player conduct and restraint. It's the players are who Stern is 'selling" not the fans, and despite the fact most fans think this is a joke, the fringe public who Stern really cares about sees thuggish behavior. Which as we know isn't a great marketing tool. I imagine school uniforms will be required by next season.

So I think considering it is only been 25 months since the Palace ordeal, Stern is going to be pissed that players have not gotten his message loud and clear. What Stern will most likely be pissed about is the fact that the situation calmed down 2-3 times and was escalated back up, several player failed to show restraint despite their chances to hold back . Mainly Ithink that is true of Melo, Robinson and to a lesser extent Jeffries.

To nates credit he did restrain himself from running after melo towards the end...

was that a coaching board that hit him?

fool- thanks for that clip. seeing it in slow-mo is very revealing. literally the second he makes contact he is retreating! what a sissy-bitch!

and you're right- it was like a weak girl's 'punch'. actually, since it was almost more of a slap at the end (his fist wasn't really closed) i'm sure the nba will use that as justification to give him a lesser suspension.

i hate melo anyway but this only cements my opinion.

wonder what his 'street cred' is now after making such a weak, soft, attempt at getting involved in a fight. he was on the one on the video saying how they deal with 'snitches' right?

well i wonder how the streets where he's from deal with pussies who throw a sucker 'punch' and then run away? i already know the answer but i'd love to see him explain himself to his 'boys'.

of course he'll probably get props just for trying to re-ignite the fight and 'get one in'. such stupidity...

but the truth of it is, he threw a weak cheap shot that a 90 year old female mugging victim would be ashamed of doing.

did you see what isiah told carmelo late in the game? you can see him mouth the words: "hey, don't go to the basket right now. it won't be a good idea."

you know, i agree with isiah. melo had no business being in the game so late when it's a blowout. i'm not saying the knicks should take cheap shots or try to hurt anyone.

but i would give him some hard fouls too if he was in the game late trying to pad his stats in a blowout win.

the plot thickens....

I think running up the score is a lame excuse. Everyone out there is making millions of dollars to do the same thing - play basketball. If you don't like the score, play better! It's that simple. It's one thing running up the score in college sports when one team is superior to the other. These two teams are on an equal playing field - with the Knicks having the disadvantage of having an idiot for a coach and president.

The only thing I do think was bullshit was the repeated dunks by JR Smith. If he's going to show off, then yes, foul him hard. But don't complain about having the starters in.

Suspensions total 47 games from Knicks-Nuggets fight

ESPN.com news services

NEW YORK -- The Denver Nuggets were the bigger losers Monday after the NBA handed out penalties in the fight that broke out near the end of Saturday night's game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

Denver's Carmelo Anthony, the NBA's leading scorer, was suspended 15 games for sucker-punching the Knicks' Mardy Collins. Denver teammate J.R. Smith and New York's Nate Robinson also received stiff penalties from the league -- 10-game suspensions.

"It is our obligation to take the strongest possible steps to avoid such failures in the future and to make a statement to all who follow the game of basketball that we understand our obligations and take them seriously," NBA commissioner David Stern said in a statement.

But there was no separate penalty for Knicks coach Isiah Thomas, who had warned Anthony not to go into the lane before the mayhem started Saturday night.

There was speculation Thomas would be penalized for his comments to Anthony. Stern acknowledged hearing about it, but said he relied only on "definitive information" when handing out punishments.

The NBA, still trying to repair its image after the brawl between Indiana Pacers players and Detroit Pistons fans two years ago, also fined the Nuggets and Knicks $500,000 apiece.

Stern said the fines to the organizations are meant to show he is serious about cleaning up the game.

"It's a more general message that I'm going to start holding our teams accountable," Stern said.

Collins, whose hard foul of Smith was the flashpoint for the fight, was suspended for six games. Knicks forward Jared Jeffries was suspended for four games, and New York's Jerome James and Denver's Nene were hit with one-game penalties for leaving their respective benches during an on-court altercation.

Thomas had a discussion with Anthony about 20 seconds before Collins delivered an arms-around-the-neck foul on Smith on a breakaway basket. Though Thomas acknowledged telling Anthony not to go into the paint, he said he meant it not as a threat but as a lecture on sportsmanship.

"I don't regret fouling him as hard as I did, I just regret that the whole thing escalated the way it did," Collins said Monday. "I was out there competing and I didn't want the guy to get a layup and I was basically trying to stop him from going in the air. That's why I fouled him that hard, so he wouldn't get hurt."

After the game, which Denver won 123-100, Thomas and Knicks players were angry that the Nuggets had four starters on the floor with 1:15 to play. And while Thomas wouldn't say if Denver coach George Karl was trying to embarrass the Knicks, he again stressed that starters shouldn't have been in the game.

"I can't speak for him, but he put his players in a tough position," Thomas said. "I think he put his players in a very bad position."

All 10 players on the floor were ejected after the brawl.

Anthony said Sunday he was sorry his emotions got the best of him. He apologized to fans, the Nuggets, the NBA, his own family -- and to Collins and his family.

"Last night's altercation with the Knicks escalated further than it should have. I take full responsibility for my actions in the matter," Anthony said in a statement. "My actions were inexcusable, and I am sorry for making this an even more embarrassing situation."

I just did some quick math:

Fines (missed pay)
Melo: $859K
Jeffries: $254K
Nate: $145K
JR Smith: $130K
Nene: $122K
Jerome J: $66K
Collins: $63K

It's a bit ironic that they guy that ignited the whole thing (Collins) actually got the smallest fine. I guess that will happen when you have the "smallest" contract.

Good. I never liked Melo anyway, and that was a bitchass punch if I ever saw one. Maybe during his time off he can arrange a celebrity boxing match with Tanya Harding. Melo goes down in the third.

That doesn't look that bad compared to Pistons Pacers. It wasn't as bad of a dust up though either.

Zeke has the Knicks playing his style of ball. He had them do the same thing he would have done as a player. Doesn't bother me one bit.

If I just heard George Karl right, he said, Isaih Thomas is a full of shit and he's an asshole and should be held accountable. LOL then he walked away from the mic all pissed off....LOL

Leave to one of the bad boys to still be able to stir the pot.

collins should get the lowest fine- he did nothing really compared to those guys. it's not a matter of salary, it's a matter of what they did.

IMO he did very little, all things considered. so his hard foul started it all. you can't blame him for what took place afterwards. you can only hold him accountable for his OWN actions and that's what they did IMO.

im wondering if maybe this is the last fight in the nba. wow. those are some stiff penalties.

zeke warned melo not to go to the rim !

Screamin A says karl ran up score on knicks as part of a UNC vendetta against thomas for screwing over brown !

karl says thats preposterous! and calls zeke a jackass!

zeke is being investigated by the nba!

one angle i havent seen so far as that this is probably zeke's nba career flatlining. yes, he still has a job, and no, its probably not the final nail in the coffin because he's got about 60 more games to fuck things up worse, but i cant imagine him having a future in the nba after 04/07. not a bad way to go out.

It was the NBA's scariest scene since the brawl between Indiana Pacers players and Detroit Pistons fans two years ago. The league is still recovering from that episode, and Stern made it clear the players needed to control themselves -- or else.

gee, i didn't know we were still picking up the pieces from that tragedy.
