View Full Version : Dantonio Delivers Tressel Like Speech
Baker 12-15-2006, 12:21 AM As many of you probably remember, one of the first things Tressel did when he was hired as Ohio State's head coach was deliver a speech stating, "We will beat Michigan." Well, Dantonio didn't quite go that bold, but his statement was clear. Very interesting, I've been hearing about it all day. Seems he made an impact, even on a former Wolverine.
DETROIT, Mich. – Wednesday evening's Detroit Free Press All-State Dream Team Football Awards Banquet provided an opportunity for Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio to get face time in front of some of the premier prep football players and some of the most influential coaches in Michigan.
Dantonio used the podium at Ford Field as a pulpit to deliver his gospel of football and life in six simple points. But before he addressed members of the Dream Team, their high school coaches, and their families, Dantonio pointed at the table where University of Michigan coaches sat and let them know that things would be different in East Lansing and that they would have their hands full.
"We will be a player in this state," said Dantonio. "We will measure up. I can promise you that."
Later, Dantonio promised the members of the Michigan Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame that he would be in attendance at every Dream Team banquet as long as he was the head coach at Michigan State.
When he was hired by as defensive backs coach at Michigan State in 1995, Dantonio said he learned from then Spartan head coach Nick Saban how important it was to have a strong Michigan State presence at the Dream Team banquet.
Throughout his remarks Dantonio stressed the importance of maintaining relationships with coaches and with players. He spoke briefly about the relationship he has with Dale Evans, his former college position at South Carolina. Dantonio says he always has time to talk to Evans when he sees an 864 area code appear on his caller ID.
"(Evans) is one of the biggest reasons that I am here as the head coach of Michigan State," Dantonio said. "He believed in me as a person and taught me as a teacher and helped me through my walk of life. It wasn't because I was a great football player. It was because I was one of his."
Dantonio went on to advise Dream Team members to choose schools where they will have lasting relationships with their coaches.
"Coaches are sometimes the most consistent things in young people's lives," said Dantonio. "They teach organization, they teach discipline, pride, work ethic, all the things that make this world go around. All of the things you want to hire someday when you are looking for people to work for you.
"I tell recruits all of the time, pick a school where you can pick up the phone 10 years from now and call that coach regardless of what level you are playing at."
Dantonio had quite a bit more sound advice for members of the Dream Team when he broke down the six characteristics he feels are needed to be successful in athletics and in life.
Jethro34 12-15-2006, 06:55 AM We will be a player in this state? We will measure up?
That's it?
Unless I missed something, that's hardly Tressel-like. That says, to me, "we will be top 2 and we'll give #1 a run for their money every so often." In other words, we'll be status quo and Central won't pass us.
Look, I think the guy has started very strong, was a great hire, and will be a pain in Michigan's side, but that's weak.
I think the thread was started in direct opposition to the Wolverines staying thread. Can't blame you, but it's quite obvious.

Baker 12-15-2006, 08:34 AM Dude, I could give a rats ass about Wolverines that are staying. This was THE YEAR. I don't care who's coming back for the follow up.
You have to read more into what he was saying. He wasn't going to point at the Michigan coaches and say "We are going to beat you." He was very bold, and many that were in attendance thought so. So don't give me your weak stance.
It was a great enough speak to convince a former Michigan All American. Happen to catch that part? It was also powerful enough to sway RoJo in his stance. See recruiting
Jethro,
It amazes me how often you forget that while Tre is allowed to comment on anything Michigan, only State fans are allowed to give an opinion on State topics.
Tre, Jethro is right. Your topic heading is bad. What you've got quoted isn't Tressel like. Coming in here I expected 1 of 2 things. Either a "we will be Michigan" comment or something that could be seen as similar to the "its just not fair for us to vote this round" statement. So unless dude was wearing a sweater vest when he gave this thing, its not Tressel-like.
Who were the Michigan coaches at the table he pointed at? Was LLoyd there? I assume not or else they would have mentioned it as it makes the comments 10x more powerful if he says it to Carr rather than the linebacker coach.
That's not to say its an irrelevant thread, just that you labeled it poorly.
Zip Goshboots 12-15-2006, 09:08 AM Ron English was there. See MY post in the recruiting thread. It doesn't matter anyway. Tressel just said "We will be prepared in X days" everyone knew what he meant, and he went out ad DID it. Five years later, and Lloyd is staring UP at Tressel.

Your first paragraph is bullshit. No matter how complimentary, I get ripped everytime I post in a Michigan forum. So don't give me this crap about me being able to post, but you guys can't. It's garbage.
You must have missed my point when I said that he didn't go right out and say "We will beat Michigan" but he was definately hinting at that.
Baker 12-15-2006, 10:59 AM Hey Fool, check out what your Michigan boy Zip had to say about this in the recruiting thread:

Dantonio tutored under Tressel, what if he abosrbed that "presence" thing that Tressel has?
In the Spartan rag, there was a blurb about Dantonio pointing to the Michigan table (Ron English and others were there), and said "I promise you: we WILL be a player in this state", much like Tressel called out Michigan when he got the job.
This could get interesting.
If Zip is right about what Tressel said initially (if it wasn't as straight forward and bold as "we will beat Michigan") than Dantonio's statement is closer to Tressel's than I had thought (because I hadn't remembered Tressel being as mondane as that).
Still coming in and expecting a bold declaration and seeing "we will be a player", was rather a let down.

It's amazing in sports how we rip those that guarantee victory and are arrogant and then when someone tries to be strong yet somewhat respectful, Fool & Jethro rips them too.
Tre if you could read, you'd see I didn't rip either of them. The only person I ripped was you for once again jumping on the first non-MSU fan who helped your poorly titled thread grow. About them, I simply said the statement "we will be a player" isn't that bold. And I'm pretty sure I've never ripped a guy for being strong, respectful, nor guaranteeing a victory.
Feel free to attribute another random generality like "ripping on people who are respectful and strong" to me though. I don't mind shooting down easy targets.
Daviticus 2.39 12-15-2006, 01:49 PM Tre, you are hilarious.

Then don't read it and don't come back. I knew when I saw your name that you'd have a stupid response. Why don't you come back when you actually have something to contribute. When is the last time you posted something of value?
99% of your posts are just ripping me or a thread. You bring nothing to the table. So shut the fuck up and take your unhealthy obsession with me elsewhere.

You know I'm really tired of the Michigan fans here that repeatedly rip me or a MSU thread over and over and over.
I can handle disagreeing with my point of view. That's great, that's what this site is for. However, questioning threads, and taking us away from the subject because you want to take your 50th shot at the die hard MSU fan Tre is way old.
Don't like it, don't read it.
Don't like me, send me a private message.
Jethro34 12-15-2006, 03:23 PM Dude, I didn't rip him. I ripped you. Comparing him to Tressel IS weak. I rip Tressel because he's an ass. I was hoping Dantonio was an ass too. He wasn't. That's actually a good thing. I have no problem with what he said. I have a problem with you hyping it like Moses came down from the mountain with two big stone tablets.

You throw around the word "hype" pretty casually. Generally I wouldn't consider posting an interesting article and comparing it to a past Tressel speech as HYPE.
I thought it would spark an interesting discussion.
I find it interesting that you think Tressel is a jerk. Maybe that's just because he has been dominant against Michigan? I don't know. He has never said anything that I'm aware of that would make him a jerk in my mind. Carr was the one acting like an ass a few years back during halftime of their game, never say anything like that from Tressel.
MoTown 12-15-2006, 04:58 PM No instead you find Tressel turning off hot water for the Wolverines, having officers search the entire Michigan team in 30 degree weather for 3 hours in front of the rabid Ohio State Students, and running a dirty ass program.
He's a very nice guy!
Lloyd did let his emotions get the best of him one time, though. I don't think you should ever let that go. EVER.
Jethro34 12-15-2006, 05:05 PM I found John L to be very much like Tressel and he never beat Michigan, so what does that mean?
By the way, be careful in the future when you refer to that "Carr being a jerk" thing. I would hate for Greg Mancina to try to ask you a question going into the locker room at halftime or after a game. I know of a game when you might have been capable of saying something that you didn't want message boarders to refer to for years afterward.
Moodini31 12-16-2006, 12:22 AM Hardly "Tressel-like". Right after Tressel was hired he addressed the crowd at a Buckeye basketball game and said "I guarantee you in 346 days (or whatever it was until the Michigan game) you will be proud of this team. That's not really "calling out" Michigan either.
"We're going to be a player in this state." -Mr. Maryland. [smilie=hahaha.gif] Well, I would hope so, you're by far the biggest school in the state and one of 2 Big Ten schools. What is he really saying? We're going to be better than Grand Valley, SVSU, Central, Western, Eastern, and we might give Michigan a run for their money? LOL.

Ha ha, you made a funny. MD = Maryland, wow, congrats on acceptance to MENSA. And being a player in this state, means we're no longer an also ran, Cinci is a BCS school in Ohio, are they a player in that state though? No, and they won't be. Texas Tech, Baylor, Houston and so on - fine schools, not players in their state, it's Texas, and maybe A&M.
Maybe if you weren't trying so hard to insult MSU and it's fans, you'd realize that you are coming off as an idiot.
Moodini31 12-16-2006, 12:13 PM Dude, I could give a rats ass about Wolverines that are staying. This was THE YEAR. I don't care who's coming back for the follow up.
How can you say that this was "THE YEAR"? Michigan was ranked #14 in the preseason, and surprised everyone. Sure we ended up having a great run, but this is by no means a "one and done" situation. Most national panelists agree that the winner of the Michigan-USC Rose Bowl will probably be the preseason #1 team in the country next year, with the loser probably #2 or #3.
Also, let's look at the schedule for the Wolverines next year. Their tough games will be at home vs. Notre Dame (without Szamardija, McKnight, and Quinn), home vs. Penn St (without Posluzny and Tony Hunt), at Wisconsin will be tough, but I like our chances in that one, and home vs. Ohio State (with a rookie QB).
I really like Michigan's chances to make another run at the MNC next year.
Jethro34 12-16-2006, 07:46 PM Yeah Tre, the preseason EXPECTATIONS for most of the country weren't all that high. lol
Mood, Wisconsin shouldn't be that bad. Stocco's backup proved he's capable, but a little pressure on him and containment on Hill and we can get it done. But enough about Michigan football, we don't need to hijack this thread.

Dantonio was hinting at competing with UM. MSU has not competed with UM in 6 years. I agree with Detroit, you don't sound very intelligent if you don't get that. You are just trying to rip MSU and its a weak attempt.
In regards to your 2 paragraph post on UM football: save it for a UM thread.
But I should respond. You talked about this being a magical season ever since the ND game. You rocked UM gear for like 3 months straight without a break. You hyped this as a National Championship year and predicted victory over OSU. So don't give me preseason rankings. You were drooling over a possible NC and you know it.

Wrong thread.
Jethro34 12-17-2006, 07:03 PM Dude, what's wrong with a Michigan fan rocking UM gear for 3 months straight without a break? Actually, I'll answer my own question. It should be 12 months straight, not 3. Such is the life.

I'm sorry dude, but you put a hault to all conversations with these posts. WTF?
Zip Goshboots 12-18-2006, 02:41 PM Dr Tre:
I disagree that my posts stop conversations.
First of all, a "conversation" would imply "ongoing, and continuous" (my definition). There are HOURS between posts on this site, so they can't REALLY be called "conversations".
Secondly, sometimes a post comes to mind and it makes me think of a song.
Just wait till Christmas Eve and Day, when I give my patented
"Zip Goshboots Posts the Words to his Top 100 Christmas Songs",
and lead the site in an all night Christmas Carol Sing-a-thon.
It'll make history. I don't think that has ever been attempted on any forum ever.
Another Ground Breaking Moment for WTF-Detroit!
