The most enduring moments of Alexis Gomez's time in Detroit came during this year's postseason. They were also apparently the final ones.
The Tigers issued a news release Tuesday announcing they would not tender Gomez a contract for the 2007 season, making the outfielder a free agent. Jose Mesa, the newly signed relief pitcher, will assume his Gomez' spot on the 40-man roster.
Gomez, 28, has one year and 107 days of major league service, not enough to qualify for salary arbitration. The Tigers who were eligible -- right-handers Jeremy Bonderman and Fernando Rodney, left-hander Nate Robertson, infielder Omar Infante and outfielder Craig Monroe -- were offered contracts before Tuesday's deadline.
Gomez will be best remembered for his performance in the American League Championship Series, specifically Game 2 in Oakland. With Sean Casey out with a calf injury, manager Jim Leyland slid Gomez into the lineup's eighth spot as the designated hitter. He responded by going 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a home run.
Gomez, who is out of minor league options, hit .272 with one home run and six RBIs in 62 games and batted .364 (4-for-11) as a pinch-hitter. He talked after the World Series about his desire to return in 2007.
Gomez is eligible to sign with any club, including the Tigers.
Surprising move IMO, unless they just re-sign him again like they've done 28 tyimes before, but I'm guessing he moves on.
