Per ESPN's Ivan Maisel.

I wonder if MSU will regret passing over Kelly for Dantonio?

edit- this post referred to the original headline "Iowa State Hires CMU Coach Brian Kelly", the thread title has since been changed.

If it makes you feel any better, GVSU has stayed strong since he left.

Yeah, but did he have enough time to build a good recruit base going forward?

I like what he did with our freshman QB. We should be solid for 4 years there at least.

BTW, on ESPN they are saying Iowa State knows who they want, but won't announce who it is. Could still be Kelly, but I'm not sure. All of the canidates are still coaching, which is why they are probably waiting a while.

Looks like Maisel got this all wrong!

Michigan's Kelly out of ISU running

Central Michigan Coach Brian Kelly apparently will not become Iowa State's next football coach after all.

Kelly, whose team is preparing for the Mid-American Conference Championship Game this Thursday, told reporters on a conference call
that the team's late afternoon practice coincides with Iowa State's announcement.

``I think the best thing I can tell you is they have a press conference today at 6 p.m., and I have practice here at Central Michigan,'' Kelly said.

Kelly's status has left even his own staff in limbo today. Curt Anes, a graduate assistant who played for Kelly at Division II Grand Valley State, asked more questions than provided answers.

``We have no idea,'' said Anes, who played the last two years with the Detroit Lions before retiring. ``Have you heard of anything?''

I think they meant "Central Michigan" not "Michigan".

LOL, they just can't admit that they were wrong.

I heard on ESPN Radio this morning, plain as day, that "ESPN's Ivan Maisel is reporting that Iowa State has hired Central Michigan's Brian Kelly to be their new football coach".

Now they are saying he was just the leading candidate? Bah!

Iowa St. to announce new coach to replace McCarney

ESPN.com news services

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State plans to announce its new head football coach Monday night.

And based on the fact that University of Texas defensive coordinator Gene Chizik and members of his family were seen by reporters Monday being picked up at the Ames airport by Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard, Chizik is the man who will replace Dan McCarney.

A school source told ESPN that the coach who arrives at the airport would be announced as the school's new football coach.

Earlier today, WOI-TV in Des Moines reported that Chizik would be the Cyclones' new football coach. Chizik, 43, has never been a head football coach at any level.

Iowa State has scheduled a 7 p.m. ET news conference to make its announcement official.

Reports earlier indicated that Central Michigan coach Brian Kelly, who has led the Chippewas to an 18-16 record the past three seasons, was regarded as the leading candidate to succeed McCarney. Nebraska offensive coordinator Jay Norvell and San Diego head coach Jim Harbaugh also were considered candidates.

School officials said Sunday they'd made a decision, but would not reveal it. In a letter to Iowa State fans, Pollard wrote that the new coach was "our number one choice from the first day of the search."

Chizik is wrapping up his second season as the assistant head coach/co-defensive coordinator at Texas. He previously was the defensive coordinator at Auburn from 2002-04

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Wednesday that Harbaugh's agent, Jack Bechta, said Harbaugh was no longer a candidate.

Iowa State was 4-8 this season and 56-84 overall under McCarney, who resigned this year, and snapped a 22-year postseason drought with five bowl appearances in McCarney's final seven seasons.
