View Full Version : OGT: #5 Notre Dame @ #3 USC
Moodini31 11-24-2006, 05:08 PM This is already a huge rivalry game and has national interest, but it really means a lot to Maize and Blue nation. If the Irish can pull the upset, Michigan has a great chance of getting their rematch against Ohio State in the National Championship game.

GO IRISH!
Tahoe 11-24-2006, 07:22 PM Its difficult for me to pull for ND. They're right there with the team to the South for me. But I prolly will be pulling for them.
Its hard to believe that the most important game in our season comes down to a game we aren't playing in, but thats what happens when we lose.
Go Blue!
Black Dynamite 11-24-2006, 08:02 PM the first time i've ever had to root for ND. it feels sickening, just kick Usc's ass so this can be over.:sas:
Jethro34 11-24-2006, 09:01 PM Even if Notre Dame wins, I think Florida would have to lose to Arkansas or Florida State for Michigan to get the rematch. I'm not saying I think that's the way it SHOULD be, I'm just saying I think that's the way it WILL be.
I'm to the point where I'm not even hoping for it anymore because I'm sick of arguing. My only thought now is that Michigan needs to win whatever bowl they end up in or the whole argument becomes ridiculous. If it's against Ohio State, perfect. If it's against someone else, like USC, Florida, whoever, then they still need to win. With any luck, Ohio State might lose their game close and Michigan will win theirs big and the whole thing will be a mess.

Wasn't that the year they absolutely demolished Michigan?
JickBoy34 11-26-2006, 11:47 AM It was 28-14...hardly absolutely demolished...and they had Leinart/Williams/Bush/White...I think we did alright...bitch.

By JOSH DUBOW
AP Football Writer
PASADENA, Calif. -Point made.
Top-ranked Southern California laid out its case for the national championship the best way it knew how - by dominating No. 4 Michigan with a 28-14 victory Thursday in the Rose Bowl.
Matt Leinart (http://usctrojans.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/leinart_matt00.html) threw three touchdown passes and caught another to lead the Trojans past the Wolverines with a performance that should be enough to persuade voters to leave USC atop the poll.
The Associated Press' No. 1 team has never dropped in the rankings after winning its bowl, and it doesn't look as though it will happen this time, either.
"I think we just won the national championship," jubilant USC coach Pete Carroll (http://usctrojans.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/carroll_pete00.html) said.
While the Trojans are primed to win their first title in 25 years, they would have to share it. Voters for the USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll are obligated to crown the winner of Sunday's Sugar Bowl between No. 2 LSU and No. 3 Oklahoma, playing in the BCS championship game.
The Trojans were left out of the Bowl Championship Series title game because of a weaker schedule, but they felt right at home in front of a sellout crowd of 93,849. http://graphics.fansonly.com/photos/schools/usc/sports/m-footbl/auto_action/a-leinart010104b.jpgUSC quarterback Matt Leinart (http://usctrojans.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/leinart_matt00.html) holds up the player-of-the-game trophy.
http://graphics.fansonly.com/schools/usc/graphics/spacer.gif
http://graphics.fansonly.com/schools/usc/graphics/spacer.gif Leinart, the game's MVP, shredded the nation's sixth-ranked pass defense for 327 yards, and the Trojans (12-1) had a season-high nine sacks and even blocked a field goal by Michigan (10-3).
The signature play came late in the third quarter when Mike Williams (http://usctrojans.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/williams_mike00.html) took a reverse handoff from Hershel Dennis (http://usctrojans.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/dennis_hershel00.html) and flicked an easy pass to Leinart, who jogged in for a 15-yard score that made it 28-7.
With the big lead, all the Trojans needed to do was run out the clock - and start waiting for the final AP poll early Monday morning. The fans had their answer already, chanting "We're No. 1! We're No. 1!" during the final minutes.
DennyMcLain 11-26-2006, 12:37 PM But, to be fair...

That wasnt much of a game last night, damn ND for losing.
Baker 11-26-2006, 06:34 PM Ahem...
Denny, don't bother. UM fans ignore common football intelligence and site final misleading scores. Just like the OSU game. Funny that you found an article using the word "dominated" in the first couple of sentences LOL!
Moodini, I know what the NC trophy looks like. I just did a five second search for a USC celebration moment. USC in the title game? Feelin it! haha
DennyMcLain 11-26-2006, 06:43 PM Welp? If Michigan had won the game, at the brick, and THE Ohio State University was in UM's position right now, would Michigan fans be clammoring for a rematch, or would they be saying "OSU had their shot...and they lost"?

And this, right here, is what separates Michigan fans from MSU fans. MSU fans cannot cheer for their in-state rival, even if it has nothing to do with their own school. MSU fan's petty jealousy will never let them cheer for the maize and blue. A Michigan fan can and will cheer for a MSU team as long as there are no implications against their team. (Example: MSU winning the basketball National Championship) I will always cheer for MSU because those are our kids out there - ours meaning the state of Michigan.
Now MSU fan is ready to cheer for USC? Typical.
And as for the game against USC a couple of years back - USC was the better team, but they did not dominate. Braylon dropped a huge pass in the first quarter that would have changed the momentum of the game. USC still would have won, IMO, but that was a HUGE drop by Edwards.
Random thought of the day: Doesn't it blow that during the Rose Bowl, the Pac-10 ALWAYS has home field advantage. Why don't those pansies travel to the Big House or Horseshoe every other year? It's a huge advantage for the Pac-10.
JickBoy34 11-26-2006, 08:20 PM DrTre...lost in an Internet MB world with no grip on reality...didn't see that coming.
MoTown 11-26-2006, 08:20 PM Oh and while I do think Michigan is the second best team and has the best shot of being USC, I understand the politics here. I don't really agree with it, considering USC lost to an unranked team while U of M lost to the best team in the land, but I understand it. And while U of M has a shot of beating OSU, I don't think they would and I can't imagine a season with the pain of losing to the Buckeyes twice.

There's a reason why so many Big 10 alumni live in SoCal. Try telling all of those diehard fans who CAN'T WAIT to experience an 80 degree January 1st, watching an outdoor parade in shorts and sunscreen (SPF 88 if from Wisconsin), that their champion will have to stay in the cold come bowl season.
BTW, have a game in Michigan, and call it the Ice Bowl, sponsored by Petro Heating Oil.

Hey now, I didnt need any sunscreen the 3 times I was out there on Jan 1st, and its actually pretty chilly for the Rose Bowl Parade.

This Michigan fan wasn't rooting for a rematch. Look in the OSU thread if you want proof.

Yes the weather is better. Yes that's the excuse that every Pac-10 fan will use. And to that I say: Pussies. It would be a shame if USC or any other Californian team would have to wear mittens while they are on the side line. And just think of the pain the fans would have to go through sitting in the cold!!! My god it would be a traveshamockery if USC and their fans would have to huddle together in the frozen tundra we call Michigan.
P.S. It's been in the 60s for the past week.

It's nice that you root for MSU to do well. And I would do the same for Michigan if it weren't for the UM fans that I know. Nearly all of my friends are UM fans and when MSU is rolling in bball, they look for cracks in the armor and root against MSU every single game.
Actually, one person here on WTF was at my house the night of the MSU National Championship game and left without telling anyone when he realized MSU would win. The following day he wouldn't even talk to me when I walked up with a smile. Wish I could root for the other guy when the time comes.
Baker 11-27-2006, 10:55 AM Classic manifestation of the little brother complex.
:drphil:
Would this be the same complex UM fans have with MSU in bball?
Glenn 11-27-2006, 11:08 AM Naw, I think if Michigan basketball fans have a complex it has more to do with the distruction of the program from the Ed Martin "Money Cake" days, and the subsequent punishment that was imposed on the those that had nothing to do with the scandal, all while the guilty parties basically got off scott free.
That's enough to give you a complex right there.
Your friends are the only UM fans that talk about college basketball.

Reeeeally? I guess I'll ignore the fact that that statement is so far from the truth and focus on the fact that its pretty sad.
You post some pretty questionable material.
LOL @Tre, I post questionable material? Check out the gaming forum for anyone wondering where that comment stems from.
Its well known that basketball is hardly an afterthought in Ann Arbor.
First actual attendance numbers:
Last time I saw the actual numbers the Big Ten was leading the nation in attendance for like 30+ years while Michigan was below the Big Ten average for yet another year. Crisler holds like 13,000+ while Michigan averages something like 10,000+ a game (MSU was averaging like 14,000+).
[Edit: I just went ahead and found the annual report (http://www.ncaa.org/stats/m_basketball/attendance/2006_basketball_attend.pdf) (Uncle Mxy style), just change the year to see info for previous years ]
Now anecdotal explination:
I'm reminded about this ... pretty much every day that's not a weekend since I work on campus and couldn't find a Wolverine bball discussion if I tried not to mention going to lunch at least once a month and watching current players walk through crowds who couldn't name the guy(s) if I payed them (that's generally Courtney Sims, but I've also seen guys like Harris and Coleman garner similar lack of interest).
It is sad, but its how it is. There's nothing questionable about whether people show at Wolvering bball games. They don't. Its a fact. It has been for years.
But all that is a sideshow. Even if you want to pretend the bball team has fans, you are still a long way from your "UM has the same hang up about basketball as the MSU little brother football complex" statement.

Wow, that was the best post you've ever had. You absolutely ripped the UM basketball program and its fairweathered fans for me! I don't even have to rip them myselves.
It's really sad that you don't support your bball program. The problem I have with this is this:
UM fans will claim they don't care about basketball and make statements like "I'm sort of a fan." But, the second they knock off MSU...EVERYBODY is loving it. Were you here after MSU vs. UM Game 1 last year. It was a UM basketball jerk off fest. Go ahead and claim you don't care, but we better not see one post during bball season ripping MSU or hyping UM then.

And if I cared about slapping my cock at my friends over college rivalries I might not have posted it. But seeing as my life doesn't revolve around spewing out over and over the same tired lines in the NCAA forum I stated it like it is, even though it bags on my University.

I was here then, and I probably said something to the extent of "that's a good win for UM."
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the bukkake treatment. In that case, there's a thread in the champaign room that I'd advice you against visiting. As for you barring me from a forum here, I think I'll probably treat that with the same respect as the girls in that thread I just mentioned. Though if you'd like to know how I plan to post in the NCAA forum at any time during the year, just go check out my previous posts. I don't plan on changing my habits.
And still we are miles away from you backing up your claim that UM fans are just as fucked up about basketball as MSU fans are about football.

DennyMcLain 11-27-2006, 05:52 PM Can somebody plesae take this bitchfest to the Terrordome?
Jethro34 11-27-2006, 08:41 PM I'm not even going to bother ereading the previous page to see why this thread is talking about UM hoops, but let it be known that I pay attention to the team every season and follow them regardless. I never give up on them and I cheer them on unconditionally. I never even threaten to give up on them, like some State fan in particular wondered about with football this season. I talked about how it was difficult to get pumped for the hoops season when football was going so well, but never went fairweather. I've also never dismissed anything because there were no expectations.

I don't agree with this, but if it were true I guess I would attribute that to the fact that we care about our program.
You don't agree with your own claim?
Baker 11-28-2006, 03:29 PM You don't agree with your own claim?
I don't agree with you saying that you don't have the jealousy thing going on in bball as you insist we have in fball.
So you position is that no one watches but they are still jealous?
