Went to the supermarket this morning to pick up some last minute stuffing and pie ingredients. As I was leaving, saw an older homeless woman (about 60-70), walking in circles in the back of the parking lot, looking for something.

Whenever I see an older person in that situation, I wonder if they have a family somewhere that might have given up on them. Forgotten, neglected? Does that woman have children? If so, where are they? Do they know where she is? Do they care?

It's wrong, but sometimes one passes on these thoughts until a family holiday arrives. In that particular mindset, thinking of a reunion of sorts and the subsequent feast, I view these individuals in a different light. I never see them as a burden or a threat, but when not concentrating on "family" they sorta blend into the backdrop of city living.

I drove up to her and offered her some apples (it was really the only stand alone edible thing in my bag of ingredients, besides the bread). Though I was no more than ten feet from her, she didn't hear me. She didn't even acknowledge my prescence, too concentrated on finding that "something" she had misplaced. She seemed nice enough, so I opened the door and left the bag of apples on the pavement, hoping she'd eventually snap back into reality and take them.

As I drove out of the lot, a Lexus nearly sideswiped me angling for the exit. Got a good look at her: about 60 years old, salon hair, tons of make-up, on the phone... and never acknowledged me. Never even got a look as to say "oops, sorry" or "oh, I didn't see you".

It's an interesting dichotomy: here's one elderly woman, homeless and distressed, with a look on her face suggesting a sweet and kind person. Another, a well-to-do elderly woman who's so enamoured with her self-importance, so inconsiderate, that she wouldn't dare acknowledge an individual if she doesn't absolutely have to. The first woman, her lack of focus was more than likely due to mental illness. The second, clearly a lack of respect was the culprit.

But it's Lexus woman who's off to a family feast, while the kind woman will have a silent Thanksgiving, alone.

It's just not right.

I'm thankful for my family. No matter how much I can't stand them sometimes, I know they'll always be there for me if I need them.

wow, great story, DM. i hate it when people are so self absorbed, they think they are the centers of the universe.

the holidays really do get to me, as i have so much to be thankful for.

and DAMN, i stuffed myself silly on Thanksgiving. Oliver Miller called.....he wanted his pants back....
