I noticed he took the n word to the full "hang you upside down" emphasis to make his context clear and kill the chance of his apology having sincere meaning. brilliant.[smilie=alpaca.gif]

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Black leaders challenged the entertainment industry, including rap artists, actors and major studios, to stop the use of the racial slur that triggered the scandal involving "Seinfeld" comic actor Michael Richards.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, a civil rights leader, and others said Monday they will meet with TV networks, film companies and musicians to discuss banning the racial slur that is a derogatory term for blacks. They also sought an effort by the public to stop using the term.

"We want to give our ancestors a present," Jackson said at a news conference. "Dignity over degradation."

Jackson also asked the public not to buy a DVD box set of the seventh season of the TV show "Seinfeld" that was released last week.

Richards, who played the wacky neighbor Kramer on "Seinfeld," triggered outrage with a November 17 racial rant against two black men when he was heckled during a stand-up comedy routine at the Laugh Factory nightclub in West Hollywood. A patron recorded the outburst with a video camera phone.

Richards has made several apologies, including one Sunday on Jackson's syndicated radio program, in which he has said he is not a racist and was motivated by anger. (Watch Richards on the radio show )

At the press conference, comedian Paul Mooney said he has used the "n-word" numerous times during stand-up performances but will no longer do so after watching Richards' rant.

"He's my Dr. Phil," the black comedian said. "He's cured me."

...(more to the article)...

Boycotting the Seinfeld S7 DVDs is stupid IMO, Richards probably gets the least money out of the main cast and nobody is going to boycott it anyway.

Google "Paul Mooney" and in the first page that comes up is this quote: "Well, white folks, you shouldn't have ever made up the word. You f****d up. I say nigga 100 times every morning; it makes my teeth white." Pretty strong talk for a guy who apparantly just now heard a white guy say N and changed his mind. Seems kinda weird to me.

So now Jackson says to stop using 'the word' at all. I thought a big part of using it casually ('a' not 'er') was to de-empower the word, at least thats what Ive seen, read, and been told by some of my friends. Its all about intent, and Snoop Dogg sayin it isnt like Michael Richards sayin it. Richards fucked up though, and I dont care how much he apologizes it just wont matter. You dont say those things if you dont think them somewhere in your mind. Makes me think of my mom who 'is not racist' but will preface any story with a black person by pointing out they are black. Probably how Richards was his whole life and it just took something to set it off so we all could see it.

im guessing jesse J has never heard of lenny bruce.

michael richards gets what he deserves, but i think its unfortunate that everyone judges a person by their absolute lowest, not for who that person typically is (though apparantly he is an ass in general. but thats just second hand, i dont know anything about him). obviously richards competely melted down and wasnt acting rationally. does one incident define you? im not sure.

hes toast though. the media, if no one else, will pick away at him till he's nothing.

...does one incident define you? im not sure...

I think an incident like this does. Like I said, you dont say these things unless they are part of your psyche to begin with. If I was onstage, and a couple black dudes really fucked my whole routine up (I am a musician for the record so its not out of the realm of possibility) I know theres a 99.99999% chance I wouldnt use the N word and DEFINITELY wouldnt go on about hangin em up. I havent been able to watch a Seinfeld ep the same since.

Jerry Seinfeld should come out and say that, the only reason this coalition condones boycotting the Seinfeld DVD, is because he is a Jew. Think about it: if Jerry was black, and the star of a mixed color cast which included Michael Richards, and Richards went on to do what he did, would Jesse Jackson be calling for a boycott?

I'd like to see how Rev Jackson and the completely useless Maxine Waters wiggle out of that one.

i didn't see the video until today.......the TMZ.com link in Vinny's post was garbled on my side, so i youtube-ed it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgmCBKPHnSY

yikes.

i'm a believer that some people say things they don't mean when pushed to extremes......but Richards went someplace pretty nasty. i don't pity him, because if you choose to present yourself in front of the masses, you better know how to hold your tongue or control yourself. especially as a comedian, where you hecklers are definitely a possibility. of course, there's the school of thought that since he said it, it must have been inside of him, and he must be a racist at heart. i honestly don't know what to think of him, since i don't know him personally. but those words were pretty scathing.

i'm a huge Seinfeld fan (i watch reruns all the time) so this is pretty weird. i'll probably continue watching the show, as i never really watched the show as a fan of Richards specifically. but, Kramer will never be the same. ironically, there was an episode where he had a black girlfriend and the joke was that he fell asleep in a tanning bed and got really dark. also, the show was always known to push the social envelope with regards to race. of course, none of that excuses Richard's behavior, but it's funny that he was a part of that and then this.

I never really got into Seinfeld for some reason, and always think of him from the movies he did beforehand:

I think that a certain amount of racism is natural, much as pissing and shitting outdoors at will is natural. Neither is healthy, and neither is tolerated in our society, but a certain amount of incontinence is bound to happen. How we deal with it goes a long way toward establishing our societal values, for good or ill. I hope Michael Richards can get his issues settled, and our society can get its issues settled.
