I know I'm not a big contributer to the NHL forum, but this is something that needs its own thread. I understand that most Detroiters don't think the Red Wings are for real and this is just a fluke - but 9 wins in a row against some pretty good teams during that streak is impressive. We need to start making a bigger deal about this!

Their defense has been sick this year, and Hasek hasn't looked like an old man. I thought this year they should just play Howard and throw the towel in on the season, but they're already exceeding expectations. Markov, Lebda and Kronwall are the young defense that they need to go along with the cagey veterans.

Thoughts on this team?

(I know this thread will jinx them and send them into a 5 game tailspin, so please forgive me)

I've only caught two games up to this point but from what I've been hearing they simply aren't allowing other teams to shoot. Looks like they took that stat padding Shanahan money and put it to good use in their back line. Nice to see something other than 50 shots and 1 goal in a boxscore. I might have to pay attention again.

Who's playing in front of the net? Just Holmstom still?

Holmer is still camped in front of the net as usual, and Hank is coming around during this streak after his slow start.

I have watched the Wings on and off this year. I usually watch the Pistons when their schedules overlap and I also have class 2 nights a week so I miss other games.

Hasek didn't look old last year either, he just got hurt. He's been very solid from what I've seen. Once and a while he looks shaky outside the net playing the puck (he always has), but it doesn't happen as much since goalies can't play the puck behind the line in most of that area.

There are some good young players on this team. Hudler and Filpulla have a lot of skill. They are making some nice plays with the puck for sure (much like Hank and Pavel did early on). Hopefully they round their game out and are here for a long time. Lang seems to be playing better than before. He's doing great with Hank (saw some good give and go's last night) and is using his body to protect the puck a lot. The defense is solid too. Lilja looks like he's regressing but Lebda has improved. Clearly is being a pest out there with Maltby and doing a great job.

i really like our chances. the power play isn't clicking right now but I think it will in due time.

Ive been able to watch exactly 0 games this year. Sportcenter doesnt even show anything. That makes me sad, but of course Im following the team and Im pretty happy so far this year.

That's corporate America. When ESPN lost the broadcast rights their interest in the NHL plummeted. When they had the rights, the NHL got a good amount of SC time. Now it's just an occasional Barry Melrose appearance, maybe weekly.

Yeah that sucks. I just checked the schedule, and theres a 33% chance Ill get to watch a game on Jan 28th. I just cant wait lol. Hopefully theyll still be in first place by then.

They didnt have that good fo a start but I guess they are doing really well right now. Something i do regret is letting Shanny go. He's do really well in NYR

I don't mind losing Shanny. I liked him, but him being gone opens PT for our young wingers. They'll benifit in the long run from this when the young guys have that much more experience for years to come. Plus, I think Shanny stopped working as hard with all the puck possessors around him here. He went in to Brett Hull mode and just picked a spot and waited for a slap shot. He isn't the power forward he once was.

The Wings didn't have much of a choice in letting Shanny go. They offered him the exact same contract that NYR did. He is just setting himself up for a NHL front office job (the front office is in NY) after he is done playing.

Funny that you called '5 games', as much as I could hate you I just have to laugh at the ability that you predicted the effect of your comment. You are forgiven this time, but DONT DO IT AGAIN!!! [smilie=paca.gif] [smilie=paca.gif] [smilie=paca.gif]

I'll try it again:

Man, a 5 game losing streak??? The Wings suck this year. I wish it were the good ol' days.

Thoughts on this team?

(I know this will jinx them and they'll go on to win 37 straight games, so please forgive me)
