anyone know anything about TV repair?

i have a relative who offered me a 36" Sony Wega that is "broken". he said the "mainboard" need to be replaced and was quoted about $200 to repair. it's free, but the TV is like 200lbs so just wondering if it was worth it.

Did you price what the TV is worth to begin with?

It depends on the specifics of the tv. is it HD? is it a flat screen? I know my tv (Samsung 27 inch flat screen) is only worth about 200 bucks (was 500 originally), and it has a great picture. So, if it's not High def you have to ask yourself if the extra size and cost of repair is worth it (assuming the repair works). If the tv is free, I'm sure it's worth it (if it is really 200 bucks). If the cost is 400+ and it's not high def I might pass.

i've entertained the thought of cracking it open to fix it myself. but, i hear the capacitors in TVs can be pretty dangerous. thanks for the link though.

regarding teh TV's worth, i don't think it's high def. it's a Wega, so it's sony's best flat screen CRTs. probably worth over $1,000-1,500 when bought new.
