View Full Version : Jalen Rose to sign with PHX
Varsity 10-29-2006, 12:48 PM Isiah working to get rid of Rose
The Knicks are in the process of negotiating a buyout with Jalen Rose, according to a source close to the veteran small forward. Rose was a no-show at yesterday's public practice at FDU-Teaneck. When asked about Rose's whereabouts, Isiah Thomas replied: "I would just say personal reasons at this time."
Jerome James and newcomer Kelvin Cato also were missing yesterday.
Rose, who is scheduled to earn $16 million, .arrived for camp out of shape and struggled in the preseason. In four games, Rose played 42 minutes and missed the only two shots he attempted. He did not dress for Friday's preseason finale against the Nets and did not sit on the bench.
It has been clear since the start of training camp that Rose has no future in New York. Quentin Richardson is expected to be the Knicks' opening-night starting small forward, with David Lee and Renaldo Balkman serving as backups. Also, small forward Jared Jeffries, who was signed during the summer, is scheduled to return from a fractured right wrist by mid-December.
Asked if Rose would be in the rotation, Thomas said: "I'll let you know in a couple of days."
Last month, the Knicks reached a contract settlement with veteran forward Maurice Taylor, who has since signed with the Sacramento Kings. Taylor is on the Knicks' salary cap this season for $9.7 million.
Being that he's going to get his money from NY, would he come here and strengthen our bench for the minimum?
Being that he's going to get his money from NY, would he come here and strengthen our bench for the minimum?
Thought the same thing when I read the thread title.
I can picture him over Dupree, but what about Mr. Cry and Flip?
ONIHR 10-29-2006, 03:09 PM ROSE would be a great add to our bench. A think he is way better than Ronald D. I mean gosh the only reason why we brought DUPREE to the team was because Dumars said he knows (THE SYSTEM?) What ever DUPREE sucks big TIME lets hope that we can land ROSE.
The FRICKEN YING AND YANG WILL RETURN TO THE D IF ROSE IS SIGNED!

All Jalen says every off season is that he'd love to come home and play and if he's going to get the same money, why wouldn't he? Flip at point, delf and SG and Jalen at SF would be solid, as would Jalen at PG, Flip at 2 and Delf at 3. Am I salivating? Goodness.
Joe Asberry 10-30-2006, 07:44 AM He's still only 31, he can't be any worse than Finley for the Spurs...go get him! who cares about Delfino, he' s still got 2 years on his contract left, he can't go anywhere...
WTFchris 10-30-2006, 09:33 AM I would sign him if he wants to come here. I don't think he'd have any trouble finding minutes if Delfino keeps shooting like Bo Outlaw.
metr0man 10-30-2006, 11:24 AM I'm all for it, but I dont want a situation where we have too many guys in a spot and trying to give them all minutes results in none of them getting proper contributable minutes (I consider 15 minutes to be the benchmark). Flip M, Delfino, and Rose, manning the 2 and 3 spots? Ehh I dont know, but i'd be more open to dealing delfino if we had Rose.
MoTown 10-30-2006, 11:27 AM I would be fine with getting rid of Delfino if we got Rose. Rose can still contribute, and without feeling the need to control the game, he could be relaxed and fill the role that we need him to.
Black Dynamite 10-30-2006, 11:39 AM rose doesnt impress me on that level. his game has become more one dimensional as of late. score or die
WTFchris 10-30-2006, 12:32 PM I like the idea of having Delfino and Rose. Then Flip can just play whoever is hustling and playing well. The other sits and watches. Maybe it would motivate them both.
Daviticus 2.39 10-30-2006, 01:29 PM Jalen Rose would give us that deadly shooter we've wanted off the bench for sooo long...
Unfortunatly, we'd have to move Delfino if we were to pick him. Which I wouldn't be opposed to.
Glenn 10-30-2006, 01:31 PM Well, the Knicks just waived Rose per ESPN News.

I think if we commit to Jalen there is no one plays and the other doesn't; Jalen is a 20+ minute guy. Delfino gets whatever is left. They could always use Flip at the point with Delf at SG and Jalen at SF and play them all along, but if it's one or the other, I thik Jalen is the choice at this point in their careers.

Yes, Joe Dumars is considering Jalen Rose. He has had at least one conversation with him and is somewhat intrigued by the possibility of having him coming off the bench behind Prince and Hamilton. I think Flip Saunders is for it. There are other considerations, though. You are talking about bringing him for one year, two at the most. If you do, you know you will lose Carlos Delfino. You aren't going to be able to sell him on waiting one more year for his chance. But, if you ask me who I would rather have for one year, Rose or Delfino, I am taking Rose, no question. But long term, you don't know exactly how much Rose has left in the tank. He will be 34 in January.
I am not worried about chemistry. Rose has never been a problem on a good team and there are enough vets, enough solid guys that if Rose acted up, he would be ostracized. Stay tuned. There will be more about it in the News tomorrow.

The last week or so, I've gotten a good number of e-mails asking about Jalen Rose, who was waived by the New York Knicks on Monday. There will be a story online tomorrow examing Detroit's pursuit of Jalen, and what impact it'll have on the team's current roster.
There are some who question whether Jalen still has anything left in the tank, for the Pistons, or any other team for that matter.
The answer to that question is yes ... and no!
He can be a very productive player, even at 33 years of age - which is AARP time in the NBA. However, he's not going to give you a lot if you're expecting him to play 25-30 minutes a night.
If you only need him 15-20 minutes a night, he can be a good addition to any ball club that's a legit playoff team. Detroit doesn't have a definite need for him right now, but what he brings - the ability to impact games in short spurts from multiple positions because of his versatility - could come in handy come playoff time.
And as far as those who believe Jalen isn't down to go anywhere that doesn't give him a chance to play decent minutes, I'm not convinced that's where his head is right now.
It certainly wasn't there when he and I talked in March when the Pistons were in New York City. He talked about wanting to be in a winning situation, sooner than later. And whenever we talk, he ALWAYS talks about how Detroit was his team growing up, how he loved Isiah and those guys, the way they played and how someday, he'd love to play for Detroit.
I asked him at the time about playing time, because my thinking - and from what I've gathered, a number of GMs have the same concern - was that it might be a potential stumbling block for him . He told me he was like any player in the league; he wanted to play as much as he could, just as long as it wasn't hurting the team. But at this point in his career, it's more important to be with good guys who were all about winning which, when translated, means 'I'll take a cut in playing time if it means a few more Ws.'
metr0man 10-30-2006, 10:24 PM if we're gonna give up on Delfino for Rose then we need more than just one season from Rose. Because otherwise there's a good chance next season we end up with neither of the two, which would suck royally (not to mention be reminscent of another recent scenario that forced us to throw money at Nazr to plug). Gimme a 2 or 3 year at minimum contract and I'm for it.
Kstat 10-30-2006, 10:31 PM No reason to think that signing Jalen means giving up on Delfino.
Delfino is 10 years younger than Jalen, he can play over 15 minutes for 82 games straight without breaking down. Jalen can't.
Move Flip to backup PG, let Delfino be the backup SG and Jalen be the backup SF. Problem solved. FLip doesn't even have to be the distrivutor of that group; delfino and jalen can both handle the ball.
It'd be nice to have TOO MANY quality bench players for once.
metr0man 10-30-2006, 10:39 PM I'll bet money if Jalen comes, and Delfino gets any less than 15 minutes per game, he asks Joe D for a trade. And Joe D isn't the kind of guy to keep a guy around against his will.
Kstat 10-30-2006, 10:43 PM I don't think any coach would play a guy like jalen a lot early unless he had to.
Jalen could be a HUGE asset in the playoffs, using up his gas in november and december would be a waste.
I still think Delfino is the primary backup swingman, even with Jalen. It just gives him another option to set up aside from Murray.
One guy is 24, one guy is 34. Clearly, you'd rather play delfino early and save Jalen for spring.
Delfino is a set-up guy anyway. Jalen would just give him another option to give the ball to.
Laxation 10-30-2006, 11:11 PM It'd be nice to have TOO MANY quality bench players for once.
Definately...
Theres nothing wrong with keeping delfino as well as rose, like someone else said both of them as well as flip can all play a bit of point, and could all get 15mpg
It would also allow us to trade delfino for someone else, since we have his position backed up, when he does finally ask for it...

Glenn 10-31-2006, 08:35 AM It seems like we've been talking about this happening (Rose to the Pistons) for 2 years now.
Rose can backup the PG, SG & SF position. He can score in a variety of ways, and he can get to the line. Very valuable stuff in "today's" NBA.
Make it happen, Joe.
WTFchris 10-31-2006, 09:19 AM Also, if Flip really is serious about a smaller lineup (at times) with Prince at PF, then it would open a few more minutes for Rose/Delfino. Besides, last year with Delfino, Prince logged a TON of minutes. It would be nice to have another option to cut his minutes. Flip should go to Delfino first, but instead of comeing back to Prince right away if Delfino is bricking shots...he can put Rose in there and rest Prince some. It was clear that Prince was worn out last year.

Pistons update...
1:15 p.m. 10/31/06
Just finished talking with John Hammond, Detroit's vice president of basketball operations, a few minutes ago. Here's what he had to say on the Jalen Rose issue.
"The process is that he's waiting to become an unrestricted free agent once he clears waivers," Hammond said. "Once he clears, the ball is in his court."
Hammond wouldn't get into specifics, but there's no doubt the Pistons would love to add him to their roster. He would play limited minutes at the small forward spot behind Tayshaun Prince, which wouldn't necessarily impact Carlos Delfino as much as some might believe.
Delfino could slide over to the shooting guard spot and play some there, which would make Flip Murray almost exclusively a backup for Chauncey Billups.
Here's a couple other nuggets from today's practice ...
Terry Porter talked about facing his old team, Milwaukee, which fired him a couple years ago, less than two weeks after they said his job was safe. The firing also came shortly after the Bucks acquired the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, which they used to select Andrew Bogut.
He says he's not bitter about how things ended, but added, "I don't want them to beat us. I don't necessarily know if that's bitterness. I've tried to close that chapter. At that time, it wasn't a happy stretch of my life just because of the way everything went down. I'm beyond it."
Also, Dave Cowens talked about his former coach in Boston, Red Auerbach, who recently passed away. It seems the perception of Auerbach was a lot different than the experiences shared by those close to him.
Cowens remembers how, when Cowens' wife was pregnant, he would bring her loxes and bagels to eat. "It's little things ... he was always thinking about somebody else," Cowens said. "He was a good man."
Black Dynamite 10-31-2006, 04:43 PM basically hunter would be odd man out excluding defensive matchups where he'f be more effective.
please explain waivers, if someone picks him up from waivers do they have to eat his bloated contract? if so he'll clear fairly easily barring mark cuban or jerry buss thinking of him as the ultimate piece to their puzzles.

I think with waivers, whoever picks him up pays an amount that comes off of his salary.
Ie. he makes 16mil, so if Detroit payed 1mil, NY would pay him 15mil
But he got bought out... so thats not an issue

MOLA1 10-31-2006, 07:07 PM Heat, Suns, Pistons take lead in Rose sweepstakes
By Marc Stein
ESPN.com
Jalen Rose is eligible to sign with a new team Wednesday after clearing waivers, and as of Tuesday afternoon three teams had emerged as favorites to land him.
Jalen Rose
Rose
The Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns and his hometown Detroit Pistons are the front-runners, according to NBA front-office sources.
All three clubs have payroll concerns, Miami and Phoenix especially, but Rose is presumably available for the veteran minimum -- half of which is paid by the league -- after receiving a buyout Monday from the New York Knicks worth $14.5 million this season. None of those three elite teams, then, would have to stretch financially to bring in the 33-year-old.
The favorite?
As the Heat prepared to host to the Chicago Bulls in Tuesday night's season opener, Miami appeared to be leading the chase, with coach Pat Riley -- who made a similar bid to sign Bonzi Wells in September -- pitching minutes at all three perimeter spots.
Given Gary Payton's advancing age, Jason Williams' tender knees and Dwyane Wade's need for rest after a long summer with Team USA, there might be more playing time available for Rose in South Florida than originally thought.
That could make Miami tough to resist, given that Rose is openly searching for the most appetizing combination of PT and championship potential.
The Heat, meanwhile, would relish the unexpected opportunity to infuse their rotation with proven new blood after making no changes to their rotation since winning the club's first championship in June.
It's also believed that the Los Angeles Lakers have strong interest, with coach Phil Jackson a well-known admirer of big guards, but it appears Rose has no shortage of title contenders to choose from.

Black Dynamite 10-31-2006, 07:51 PM why? the team already said the lineup would be rose sf, delfino sg and flip pg.
hunter doesnt have to play much and i doubt theres any uproar over him losing minutes.
Uncle Mxy 10-31-2006, 08:11 PM I'd rather have Delfino at PG than Flip.
I just don't see this Jalen thing happening, especially if he's thinking about his post-NBA career as a TV/media sports personality. Of course, I was surprised he didn't manage to endear himself in NY, so I may have the wrong read on him.
MOLA1 11-01-2006, 12:36 AM I'd rather have Delfino at PG than Flip.
#1, Delf hasn't proven to anyone that he'd be great at any position yet.
PG is not a walk in the park, especially for Delf who has never really ran point.
Sure the guy can pass the ball and he has a decent handle, but he'll never
play PG for the Pistons. He'll probably never play PG anywhere but Argentina,
but even then, he mostly ran at the 2 with Gino handling or Pepe out there.
#2, Flip has a tremendous handle, he can pass, but most of all, he can create
his own shot with the best of them. Flip can play the 1 and 2 no problem,
especially in this system. Our guards can get off here. See Tony Delk,
Mike James and even Chucky Atkins back in the day. Our coaches may change
but the system remains the same. Flip can ball at the 1 all day if need be.
#3, On the Jalen tip, my man can play the 1, 2 and 3. Flip can play the 1 & 2
and Delf can run at the 2 and 3. That's a versitle ass backcourt. I'd love it.
Varsity 11-01-2006, 12:41 AM I'd rather have Delfino at PG than Flip.

I'd like Delfino to figure out the perplexing SG position first, then we can talk abou what he does better than Flip, who at least played PG before. I don't get if you really want Delfino to play PG or if you're just dissing Flip. If you're serious, this is almost as bad as those that thought Maxiell could play SF.
did you guys hear the report during the Heat/Bulls game?
the gist of it was that Jalen was interested in Miami, and the choice was Riley's now.
not good....he might cockblock, just so we don't get him.

flip is a shooting pg and delfino is a passing sg. i think in the end delfino will be the primary passer. but Flip isnt a great set up guy. isnt horrific, but not great either. the situation is perfect if delf is setting up him and rose along with whoever else is on the court. as long as we arent wearing cbill out again this year.

Heat seem interested in ex-U-M star, whose playing time would be limited in Detroit.
Chris McCosky / The Detroit News
AUBURN HILLS -- Jalen Rose's options, at least as of Tuesday evening, were the Pistons, Heat, Suns and Lakers.
Not bad for an out-of-shape, soon-to-be 34-year-old forward.
Rose is expected to clear waivers at noon today, at which point he will be owed the $15 million buyout he worked out with the Knicks and be free to sign with any team.
"Once he clears, the ball is sort of in his court," said John Hammond, Pistons vice president of basketball. "It's totally his call."
Miami seems to want Rose the most. President and coach Pat Riley has said Rose would play ample minutes at point guard (until injured Jason Williams returns) and small forward. Lakers coach Phil Jackson also has coveted Rose's versatility and passing skills for his triangle offense.
It's a bit of a mystery why the Suns are in the bidding. They seem well-stocked at all three wing positions.
Pistons president Joe Dumars made it clear to Rose on Monday that his role would be limited here. He would be a backup to Tayshaun Prince at small forward. Rose said he was looking for a 20-plus-minute rotation spot and Dumars said he wouldn't get that with the Pistons.
"I have no feeling whatsoever," Hammond said. "We're not to that point in the process yet. There's really nothing to discuss."
Hammond then added, "We like our roster. We are comfortable with who and what we are right now."

Rose update, and other stuff
There are four teams in the running for Jalen Rose -- as of right now. I will list them in the order of who I think has the best chance of getting him: Miami, Lakers, Detroit, Phoenix.
Pat Riley is telling Rose what he wants to hear -- he will get lots of playing time. Riley is telling him he will play immediately at the point because Jason Williams is hurt. He said he also will play him at small forward when he moves Antoine Walker to power forward and goes to a smaller lineup. What Riley isn't telling him is, once Walker comes back, Rose's minutes pretty much get sliced in half. And what Rose isn't telling Riley is, he's way too out of shape right now to help much at point guard. So who knows.
I think the Pistons are moderately intrigued by Rose, nothing more. I don't think they are looking at it as a do-or-die addition. Which it's not. It will not be the move that kills the Pistons title chances if Rose is sitting on Miami's bench. His impact on the Heat would be, in my opinion, less than Michael Finley's impact was on the Spurs (and that wasn't too much.)Same if he picks the Pistons.
In any event, we will probably know where he's going before tip-off Wednesday.
On another topic -- how cruel is it for Ben Wallace to have to be down in Miami tonight and watch the Heat's ring ceremony. Wow. Expect that to light a fire under Big Ben, for sure. It's not been a real happy camp for him thus far.
Varsity 11-01-2006, 11:37 AM For the Pistons say they're "all set" bugs me. It's as if they don't realize they're one injury away from a bunch of losses. They really need to do all they can to get some more depth, and for the record, Ron Dupree is NOT depth.

I agree, that open roster spot still bothers me too.
Wallace was counting his millions in camp this year. I'd say its been plenty happy.

I'll be back later today if there's something new on Rose (I expect him to sign with the Heat either today or tomorrow).
Laxation 11-02-2006, 02:26 AM Bah...
Free agent Jalen Rose has narrowed his choice of teams to the Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns and plans to make his pick by Thursday.
NBA front-office sources said Wednesday night that Rose, who initially had his hometown Detroit Pistons on the list as well, has eliminated the Pistons from consideration and was nearing a final decision
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2646601
Glenn 11-02-2006, 02:53 PM Rose also might have to deal with some chemistry issues in the Heat locker room. During the summer Riley convinced Payton and Alonzo Mourning to re-sign in Miami for less money, citing the dollar-for-dollar luxury tax. They might not be too happy if Riley then turns around and stuffs Rose's pockets with extra cash.
But for now, at least, the Heat will be singing Rose's praises and calling him another valuable piece in their quest to defend their title if he signs. And If nothing else, Rose would give the Heat one thing they had a year ago that they do not this season: a veteran in search of a championship ring.
This could be fun to watch after all.
Glenn 11-02-2006, 04:24 PM McCosky
Random stuff
Here's the deal on Jalen Rose. He's going to end up in Miami unless something goes horribly wrong today. The delay is over money -- shocker. Yes, Rose got $15 million from the Knicks and could probably make it through the year on the $1.78 million vets minimum. But his agent -- Arn Tellem -- can't. See, Rose's contract with the Knicks was negotiated by his former agent, David Falk. So, commission off the $15 million goes to him. Tellem doesn't get a dime. Thus, to maximize his cut, Tellem is trying to get a piece of the Heat's mid-level exception.
The Pistons aren't missing out on anything here. Rose would have played 10 minutes a night here, never gotten into shape and would have very quickly become an unhappy camper. You say, what if Delfino proves to be a bust? Trust me, if Joe Dumars needs to find a back-up wing player before the trade deadline, he will be able to do it. There is no shortage of competent players available at that position. Plus, if he wants to add a bigger piece, he can offer one of the team's two first-round draft picks -- which are gold right now. The Pistons are some $7 million under the luxury tax threshold, they have those picks, they have Dale Davis or Delfino to use as trade bait -- they have a lot of flexibility if they should want to start shuffling the roster.
But now is not the time to even be thinking that. Please don't fall into the trap of overreacting to one bad game. The Pistons are going to start slowly, that was pretty much a given. Now, giving up 70 points in the paint -- that was brutal. They can't be doing that every night, for sure. But don't get all bent out of shape and think the sky is falling because of the bad opener.
Glenn 11-03-2006, 08:34 AM Seems like PHX can get whomever they want, lol.
Also, what's up with the byline in this article?

Suns close to signing Jalen Rose
By Jerry Brown, Jerry Brown and Jerry Brown
November 2, 2006
Apparently piqued by the opportunity to play in the Suns' up-tempo system, veteran Jalen Rose was on the verge of signing a one-year deal with the Phoenix Suns Thursday night.
NBA sources said the deal would likely be completed by the end of the night. The 33-year-old Rose would earn the NBA minimum salary of $1.178 million — $744,551 of which would be paid by the Suns and the rest coming from a league fund created for that purpose.
Rose was also looking hard at Miami, but sources said the Heat was also offering only the NBA minimum (they could have offered as much as $1.7 million and stayed under the NBA's tax threshold).
While the Heat play a more structured, half-court style, the Suns like to run and so does Rose. Rose's agent, Arn Tellem, also represents Tim Thomas -- who signed a minimum deal with the Suns last year and turned it into a four-year, $24 million deal with the Clippers in the off-season.
At 6-foot-8 and 225 pounds, Rose has played point guard, shooting guard and small forward — which fits in with Phoenix's penchant for interchangeable parts. He averaged 20 points or more three times in his career and 18.5 points a game as recently as the 2004-05 season.

WTFchris 11-03-2006, 08:51 AM Bad move for Rose IMO. He'd be better off in Miami where Payton and J Will aren't very impressive. In Phoenix he'll be contending with the super sub Diaw for minutes. Plus they are high on Barbosa and Banks as well. Unless Amare misses time and Diaw is forced to play up front a lot more...Rose won't get a lot of run there. Tim Thomas only played 24 minutes a night with Amare out and no Banks, so I wouldn't expect the same type of career boost.
McCosky wrong again, shocker.
Glenn 11-03-2006, 08:55 AM Maybe something went horribly wrong?
No disrespect, but your post reeks of, well, disrespect.
Who am I supposed to have respect for?

WTFchris 11-03-2006, 09:25 AM BTW, detroit insiders with mustaches are generally wrong.

Why am I supposed to have respect for this man?
Glenn 11-03-2006, 09:55 AM Why am I supposed to have respect for this man?
Because he's very skilled at saying something and nothing at all at the same time?
(plus, the PHX signing isn't a done deal yet, apparently Shaq called Jalen and asked him to come to Miami, so CM may not be wrong after all)
Glenn 11-03-2006, 04:11 PM Done deal.

Recently waived Rose will sign with Suns
ESPN.com news services
The Jalen Rose sweepstakes appear to be over.
The winner? Phoenix.
According to his personal blog at JalenRose.com, Rose has chosen to play in Phoenix after being courted by the Suns, Miami Heat and Detroit Pistons. Rose was bought out by the New York Knicks during the preseason.
"Being waived by the New York Knicks has created an opportunity for me to find a team to play on that will hopefully get me back into the playoffs with a realistic opportunity to win a NBA Championship," Rose wrote. "I am lucky and thankful to the numerous teams that have shown interest in me over the past few days, in particular Joe Dumars and my hometown Pistons and Pat Riley and the Miami Heat.
"Choosing the next chapter in my career has been difficult but I am proud to announce that I am now a member of the ... PHOENIX SUNS. I look forward to getting this season started and hope to see you at the Larry O'Brian championship trophy presentation in June. The stage is set, now its time to grind!"
Rose e-mailed the link to his Web site to selected media outlets, including ESPN.com.
Terms have not been released. The NBA veteran minimum salary is $1,178,348. The Suns have only $1.5 million of their cap exception remaining.
Rose secured a buyout from the Knicks worth $14.5 million this season.
Nice work pimping your website, J.
Skilled at saying something and nothing at all at the same time?
When does he EVER say ANYTHING that's important or even correct? I'll tell you, when he's allowed to sit outside Dumars' office while Dumars finalizes a deal for a player McCosky had said EARLIER THAT SAME DAMN DAY wasn't an option at all for the Pistons and even went so far as to ridicule "the fans" for being unrealistic.
And he's certainly not "skilled" at anything. When has anything he's written ever made you say, "Wow, that's written well"? Or maybe you think highly of his litany of washed out blue jeans and plaid button down shirts.
Glenn 11-03-2006, 04:22 PM I'm just effing with you, I know he's worthless.

What The Game Made Me, Not What The Fame Made Me
Welcome to my official blog, a new feature on my official website which will be relaunched next week. My new site will give you the opportunity to get to know me on a personal level as well as offer many new multimedia and interactive features. I guarantee you'll enjoy my site because I will be updating it on a daily basis and will be constantly posting new blogs about everything from basketball to politics.
This has been one of the busiest weeks in my life, but before we talk about my future let me reminisce a little bit about my past?
If you've followed my career, you know I am truly the Rose That Grew From Concrete. I was born and raised in Detroit by my mother, a loving family and caring community - and bless their souls for all of the love and support they provided to me as I grew up. I knew growing up that basketball was in my blood because my father, Jimmy Walker, was one of the best college basketball players of all time (Providence College), the number one pick in the 1967 draft (Detroit Pistons) and a NBA all-star. Even though we have yet to meet, we are in the record books as one of the all-time leading father-son scoring duos in NCAA Division I history. Growing up on the West Side of Detroit, my family did not enjoy a lavish lifestyle and I found sports and school as a way to stay out of trouble... I was always in the backyard, at the park or at the gym playing basketball. My love and passion for the game led me to countless nights on my knees praying for the opportunity that I have been blessed with today, to play in the NBA and hopefully stand as a role model to young people in difficult circumstances.
My first taste of national exposure came when I played on Team Superfriends in the AAU 13 and under division. We made it to nationals in St. Louis and the following year, in the AAU 15 and under division, we lost in the national championship in Seattle. Not giving up, we were national champs on my 17 and under AAU team, Team Michigan. I was also fortunate enough to be coached by the legendary Perry Watson at Detroit Southwestern High School. Coach Watson had a great influence on me as both mentor and father figure, a bond that continues between us to this day. At Southwestern, we won three public school league, three city and two state championships and were national champs in 1990. I was privileged to play on this team with future NBA stars Howard Eisley and Voshon Lenard. We were ranked #1 in the country by USA Today. Coming out of high school, I was a McDonald's All-American and knew I would have a chance to have an impact in the college game. I would like in this forum to thank all of my high school teammates and coaches for helping me become the player and person I am today.
In 1991, I decided to attend the University of Michigan along with Juwan Howard, Ray Jackson, Jimmy King and Chris Webber - I was the fifth freshman to sign with U-M so it only made sense that I choose to wear #5. At that time, I didn't think any of us realized the impact we were about to have and how the "Fab Five" would revolutionize the sport of basketball. Black socks, shoes, baggy shorts and bald heads, were not the only things that made the "Fab Five" so original; we were the best freshman class in NCAA history and fortunate enough to play for the NCAA Championship twice. It seems like just yesterday that I was setting the freshman scoring record as a 6'8 point guard and named to the All-Big Ten First Team and the Associated Press All-American Second Team. A special thanks to Coach Steve Fisher, my college teammates and all diehard Michigan fans; I will always cherish our camaraderie and walk with the "Fab Five" swagger.
In 1994, I decided to leave U-M after my junior year and enter the NBA draft. I was drafted in the first round by the Denver Nuggets. In Denver, I was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team after dishing out 389 assists, setting a Nugget's rookie assist record. I was ecstatic to be in the playoffs my first year in the league because that's when the fun really starts. I only played in Denver for two years and experienced my first trade in 1996.
Headed to Hoosier Town... I was traded to the Indiana Pacers, where Coach Larry Brown was my first coach. That year was my worst NBA experience to date. I had 15 DNP's that season and we failed to make the playoffs. The following year, I was coached by NBA Legend Larry Bird (a true role model of mine) and Assistant Coach Rick Carlisle; we went to the 1998 Eastern Conference Finals and lost to Michael Jordan & Scottie Pippen as the Bulls beat us in game seven. In the 1999 playoffs, we lost to the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals on the infamous four-point play when Larry Johnson was "allegedly" fouled by Antonio Davis while taking a three point shot (terrible call). My first year as a full-time starter came during the 1999-2000 season, I led the Pacers in scoring and steals and received NBA Player of the Week accolades in March. In game one of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals, Reggie Miller and I were on fire against Philadelphia, both scoring over 40 points (rare occurrence of two teammates scoring 40+ points in same playoff game). I also led the team in scoring during the NBA finals that year and earned the NBA Most Improved Player Award. We continued our string of playoff appearances in 2000-01 under new Coach Isiah Thomas but lost to Philadelphia in the first round. During that season, I dished a career-high 20 assists against Cleveland.
Blowing into the Windy City... In February of 2002, I was traded to the Chicago Bulls who had the worst record in the league. Even though we had a losing record, I finished the season as one of the top scorers in the league dropping a career-high 44 points against Houston. During the 2002-03 season, I won numerous community service awards as well as Bulls Player of the Year accolades and the Professional Basketball Writers Association/Magic Johnson Award. I also finished that season playing a career-high 3,351 minutes (ranking second in Bulls history to Bob Love's 3,482 in 1970-71). Despite giving my all to a situation that unfortunately wasn't going anywhere at the time, I was again traded to a lottery-bound team.
Next stop T.Dot... In December of the 2003-04 season, I was traded to the Toronto Raptors. As one of the league's ironmen (286 consecutive games), I was named NBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week in February of 2005. Just before the trade deadline, the rumor mill started to churn and I was once again traded to one of the league's bottom feeders at the time. As a player, I was starting to get frustrated because this was the third consecutive trade that brought me to a team with a record worse than my current situation.
A Bite out of the Big Apple... In February of 2006, I was traded to the New York Knicks. With 26 games remaining in the season, I tried to remain optimistic and finish the season strong even though we were already statistically eliminated from the playoffs. My stay in NY was limited, but I do want to thank the city for welcoming me with open arms; especially Isiah Thomas (a lifelong role model of mine), James Dolan, Steve Mills, my teammates, the entire organization and the fans that continue to make the Garden the Mecca of basketball arenas.
I hope my fans realize that I am more than just an athlete. I have been called upon to be a leader on every team that I have played on. I am also a winner who has been privileged enough to perform on the highest levels in high school (national championship), college (NCAA Finals) and professionally (NBA Finals). I am a philanthropist and I created The Jalen Rose Foundation so that I can give back to the communities where I have lived and played basketball. I was recognized last year by Black Enterprise Magazine as one of America's Leading Individual Donor Black Philanthropists. I also understand the value of a college education and despite leaving college early, made it a priority to complete my degree at the University of Maryland in Management Studies in 2005. By majoring in Mass Communications while I was at U-M I established the platform for a career in radio, television and/or film when I finally decide to hang 'em up. I have been working on my broadcasting skills for the past five years with consistent gigs on ESPN, TNT, ABC, The Best Damn Sports Show Period, Sporting News Radio and most recently, Hoop Magazine.
As I tip-off my thirteenth NBA season, my focus is solely on winning - not just in the regular season, but in the playoffs. The last few years have been challenging for me and I've found a way to take the good with the bad. I've had numerous coaches and teammates over the past few seasons and as I join my sixth NBA team, I am excited to find a new home with the hope of some stability. I am eager to get back to a winning environment because that is what I know. God willing, I plan on playing this game for a few more years.
Being waived by the New York Knicks has created an opportunity for me to find a team to play on that will hopefully get me back into the playoffs with a realistic opportunity to win a NBA Championship. I am lucky and thankful to the numerous teams that have shown interest in me over the past few days, in particular Joe Dumars and my hometown Pistons and Pat Riley and the Miami Heat. Choosing the next chapter in my career has been difficult but I am proud to announce that I am now a member of the... PHOENIX SUNS. I look forward to getting this season started and hope to see you at the Larry O'Brian championship trophy presentation in June. The stage is set, now its time to grind!
Thank you again for all of the love and support you have given me during my career, I couldn't have made it this far without you. My official website (www.jalenrose.com) will be relaunched during the next week... remember to check back soon for my weekly blog and latest updates. Holla!
