World Series Game 2
St. Louis (1-0) at Detroit (0-1), 7:30 p.m. ET

Having stolen Game 1 of the World Series, the Cardinals now look to take a commanding 2-0 series lead when they send former Tiger Jeff Weaver (7-5, 4.68) to the mound opposite Kenny Rogers (19-8, 3.58) in a battle of veteran hurlers at Comerica Park.

DET: LHP Kenny Rogers (2-0, 0.00 ERA in postseason)
The emotion Rogers (2-0, 0.00 ERA postseason; 17-8, 3.84 regular season) displays on the mound will be fuel for the home crowd. His Game 3 performances in the Tigers' last two series have been masterpieces to watch, compiling a 16 1/3-inning postseason scoreless streak dating back to against the Twins in the 2003 AL Division Series. Rogers gave up five earned runs over 5 1/3 innings against the Cardinals in a June start at Comerica Park. His style is somewhat similar to Tom Glavine, who shut out St. Louis for seven innings in Game 1 of the NLCS before the Cards knocked him out after four innings in Game 5.

STL: RHP Jeff Weaver (2-1, 2.16 ERA in postseason)
It's a bit of a homecoming for Weaver (2-1, 2.16 ERA postseason; 8-14, 5.76 regular season), who began his career as a Tiger. Acquired as a reclamation project in July, the righty has been outstanding in the postseason. His win in Game 5 of the NLCS probably represented the pivotal performance in that series, and he has not struggled in three playoff starts in 2006. Weaver has shown the ability to succeed a couple of different ways, either as a fastball-slider pitcher or by mixing in his curveball.

Kenny wouldn't put pine tar (or any other foreign substance) on his hand, would he?

Fox making a big deal out of this.

Bases loaded, no out with the top of the order coming up to bat.

Edit: Damn. Didn't get a single run out of that.

Pfft, we didn't need to beak the game open anyway.

Pudge really has to get it going at the plate. He has been awful this postseason.

3-0 Tigers.

Sounds like the Tiger fans are scared. I haven't seen the whole game (came in with the bases loades and 2 outs) but the crowd sounds damn lame for paying all that money to be there.

Phew. Todd Jones at his finest.

Vinny

KEEEENNNNY!!! GOD. And two more random hits off Jones. Seriously, a hit off his glove and a bloop double....the guy's better than he looks at most times...

Matt

WOW, Todd Jones certainly made that one interesting.

great win, hope they can carry the momentum into St. Louis on Tuesday.

i've had todd jones' back alll year, but i'll admit it, i was thinking he's done as our closer while it appeared he was blowing the save.

got it done though.

i've also dogged pudge all year, but he has a rep as a gamer, so i thought he might have a big world series... not yet, anyway. im wondering how much no steroids has affected him.

also, hope the pine tar blows over. btw, did anyone see his post game interview? to say the least, he seemed slightly off.

I have to admit he did apear to look like he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

It was weird to actually have the umps and officials backing us.

A little Pine Tar never hurt anybody.

He wiped it off and pitched a great game.

Carlos Guillen is crushing the ball this post-season (to the tune of 1.191 OPS).

Glenn
10-23-2006, 07:50 AM
That is exactly why I don't like Jones as our closer.

Any closer that can't strike anybody out is too susceptible for bloop hits. Too many balls get put into play and the law of averages eventually comes back and gets you.

I know that I wasn't the only guy that was hoping to high hell that Leyland was going to put Zumaya in when Jones started imploding out there.

I seriously almost broke my TV set.

I wouldn't have had to worry about Jones anymore at least, I think Kenny would have killed him with his bare hands. I bet he would get a good grip whilst doing so too.

Saves vs. blown saves are the only stat that matters. My heart rate isn't a factor so long as the has that S- next to his name.

Vinny
10-23-2006, 12:33 PM
Yeah. Would I rather have Mariano Rivera in there? Of course! But noone seems to be acknowledging that with the exception of a few rough outings, mostly early, TJ's pitched pretty fucking good this year. I've got faith in him.

Glenn
10-23-2006, 12:41 PM
I don't disagree that Jones had an excellent year.

It's just my opinion that it's too risky to have that many balls being put into play in games of this magnitude.

I hope I'm wrong and we get away with it, but it won't keep me from wanting to see a change there next year in any case.

Hermy
10-23-2006, 12:44 PM
Understood G, but factor his incredibly low BB total in there as a counter to the hittable pitches. He makes we want to rip out my pubes with packaging tape sometimes, but if his ERA was 2 points lower and he'd blown 2 more saves would you feel better?

Glenn
10-23-2006, 12:51 PM
Nah, I don't care about a closer's ERA for the most part.

I put more weight in how many inherited runners score, BAA, and K's (and saves, of course, one stat that TJ did fine in, to be fair).

Hermy
10-23-2006, 01:00 PM
Well, Todd doesn't have many inherited so thats a tough one....and being a 9th inning guy he may often allow those guys to score with his focus on the outs needed for the win. I care more about OBPA, and K's, yeah, that would be nice I agree. Overall he's average, but we have more pressing concerns elsewhere to complain about the guy much.
