View Full Version : OGT: Sparties at NW
Jethro34 10-21-2006, 01:04 PM Ok, I'm not a State fan and it's understandable that State fans feel nothing about this game going into it. At 3-4 the season is clearly upsetting and a visit to 2-5 Northwestern is merely a blip on the college football radar. Having lost 4 in a row, basketball season is coming and the focus, wisely, has shifted.
But someone has to talk about this game still. The future of the program is in the balance here. It seemed clear coming into the game that John L. has to go at the end of the year.
But I'm checking out this game and I see tons on mental mistakes and I see 17-3 early in the 2nd quarter. What is going on? Even as a Michigan fan, and taking into consideration that the team has no faith in JLS and several players are banged up, is there not more pride than this? How can this team be content with this type of performance? Can Spartan fans have any confidence that your fairly nice recruiting class will stay intact?

Jethro34 10-21-2006, 02:03 PM Good gosh! Can it get worse? To start the 2nd half (down 24-7) State finally gets a 3-and-out from Northwestern. What do they do with it? Rough the kicker. Brilliant. Next play for Northwestern goes for 52 yards. 2 plays later it's now 31-3.
Tre actually called me at halftime. During part of our conversation, he expressed his hope that State would announce the firing of JLS before the second half.
Baker 10-21-2006, 02:28 PM Moodini asked me yesterday if I thought State would win this game. I said yes and I thought they could ring up a few wins in a row given the schedule. However, I told him that even though I always want State to win, I don't want a few wins to save John L.
Well, looks like John L. took care of that himself. I don't want to hear excuses about injuries, etc. All those injuries did was make your talent even with NW. Thank you John L. for cleaning up our program. Now you can leave. I'll be furious if they don't fire him after today. They might as well fire him and get working on a new coach. Start talking to Mooch now. Get a coach in place so that he can recruit right away.
Thanks for the custodian work Johnny, Peace Out!
b-diddy 10-21-2006, 02:59 PM might be giving up to early huh?
looks like state has a chance in this one now.
b-diddy 10-21-2006, 03:02 PM say what you will, stanton's made some real gutsy scrambles this drive, 31-38.
Jethro34 10-21-2006, 03:16 PM wow. What a collapse! I give State a ton of credit for coming back here. 38-38 and they just picked it off. Looks like they'll likely win after all. This will be huge for them.
Baker 10-21-2006, 03:45 PM WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF
Holy Shit, I don't know that I've ever seen a bigger comeback in college football history! It's 38-3 in the third quarter and I like the rest of the Spartan World called for John L.'s head. I leave the TV running, walk over to the computer to sticky the Who Will Replace John L. thread and as I'm doing so the unthinkable occurs! Wow!
38 Unanswered points!? Down 35 well into the third quarter and you win? Let's get all the obvious things out of the way, they shouldn't have been in that position. But, as a Spartan Football Fan, we don't get many sun shiny days in late October so I'm going to enjoy this one. I'll readily eat my words. You gotta give it up to those players. Jethro and I were just on the phone and we both seemed to agree. If we were on the field and it was 38-3, it would be extremely difficult to put in a good effort. I can't believe they came back.
I tip my hat the Spartans today. I know I would have given up. Hopefully they can take this momentum with them and string a few together.

The dude is so battered it is ridiculous. When he walks around it makes me hurt. It looks like his ribs, thumb, and ankle are all killing him.
I was so happy for him though late in the fourth. He leads them down the field. Scrambles out of a heavy rush, throws a TD pass while getting drilled to tie the score at 38. He lays on the ground with his hands up and the announcer says,
"What a leader!"
I got out of my chair, smiled, and walked over to our >>Mummy<< Halloween decoration and flicked it off.
bigdt87 10-21-2006, 07:04 PM This was sweet. The commentator said it ws the biggest come back in Division 1a history.

As does ESPN.com
Baker 10-22-2006, 12:53 AM Yup, the Spartans broke 2 NCAA records. 1 being the biggest comeback in the history of college football! Great publicity for the program. They really needed this. Huge props for Spartan Football players showing tremendous heart.
I think that makes up for blowing the ND game. Props to State, I woulda gave up.
Train Wreck 10-22-2006, 11:24 AM Great Comeback but no it doesn't make up for the Notre Dame debacle
Moodini31 10-22-2006, 02:12 PM First off, I give MAJOR credit to Sparty for making the biggest comeback in NCAA history. WOW! To overcome the mental hurdles and come back after being anniahlated by a team for nearly 3 quarters is nearly impossible. Much dap.[smilie=welldone.gi:
BUT....this can be looked at 2 ways.
Pro-Michigan State was down 38-3 and made the biggest comeback in NCAA history. That's AMAZING!
Con-It happened against Northwestern. How can you get down 38-3 to Northwestern in the first place?
Hey, a win is a win I guess.
Baker 10-22-2006, 05:12 PM I feel the same way about the fact that they shouldn't get down. But, that view gets blown out of the water when your team does something as remarkable as they did. It actually helps the program that they got down so big. If MSU would have came in and just beat NW soundly, nobody would have been talking about them. But, I turn on late night College Gameday and the first game they show? MSU's comeback. That is great publicity for the program and the team needed that. That win could be so huge not only for this season but for the program. If it can spark them and get them rolling, MSU could go into the Penn State game with the possibility for a 8-4 season. That would be a tremendous turnaround and it would be big for recruiting.
I gotta admit, I am still skyhigh about that comeback. Unreal!
Agreed. Coming back is the only way this game is a big deal. If they win in an ordinary fashions its "Eh, its good they didn't lose but its just NW", if they lose its "see, the tailspin continues". Yeah they shouldn't have been down so much but teams have done that before (got blown out in the middle of a nose dive to a team they shouldn't lose to), coming back like this is incredible. Regardless of what's happening in the season, the greatest comeback in 1-A history is damn impressive.
WTFchris 10-23-2006, 10:41 AM If MSU can keep that momentum going all the way into Penn State, JLS might have saved his job...and MSU from a failed season. Props to the boys for fighting back for sure.
MoTown 10-23-2006, 03:14 PM I guess I'm looking this in the opposite way that Sparty fans are. They were down by 35 to NW! Great job in coming back, but they were the favorite to begin with. Now if State was the underdog in this and won like that, that would be something worth celebrating. But they should have killed Northwestern throughout this game. Don't get me wrong, a 38 point comeback is nothing short of amazing, but this just shows the talent that MSU has wasted this year. That offense can be great, but it's soft. For this year, I put most of the blame on JLS, and some of the blame on Stanton(not going to be a popular comment w/ Sparty fans).

Spoken like a true Wolverine fan.
Give them a break. We've had 4 weeks of ripping JLS and Stanton. They did the one thing everybody rips them for, they showed heart. Save the critiques for the next time they lose. This is a time to give props.
MoTown 10-23-2006, 03:57 PM Fiar enough... I'll save it until next loss.
For the record Tre, I've always been a Stanton fan. I honestly wished he was a Wolvie for the last two years. This year changed me a little. But once again, I'll save it for next loss.
