SOUTHFIELD -- Former University of Michigan football coaching legend Glenn Edward "Bo" Schembechler was to be examined by doctors Friday after passing out during the Friday taping of a sports program at WXYZ Channel 7, a fire official said.

Paramedics rushed to the TV station, located on 10 Mile Road, about 10:30 a.m. Friday after receiving several phone calls on a health concern involving the 77-year-old Schembechler. The former coach apparently passed out just prior to the taping. Channel 7 officials did not return telephone calls Friday morning.

"He was under the (studio) lights and blacked out," said Southfield Battalion Chief Dean Masser. "When paramedics arrived he had regained consciousness and all his vitals were good. But he was unresponsive and unconscious for about a minute."

Masser said Schembechler insisted on finishing his taping before leaving to see his own physician at Ann Arbor's University of Michigan Hospital. He was transported there by a private ambulance company, Masser said.

"He was alert and even walked to the ambulance under his own power," said Masser. "But because of his history and what occurred, his physician wanted to see him as soon as possible."

Schembechler, who has a history of heart problems, coached at Michigan between 1969-1989, and his last game as head coach was the 1990 Rose Bowl. His teams won a total of 235 games, more than under any other U-M football coach..

Masser said Schembechler was participating in the "Big Ten Ticket," a weekly series that previews upcoming football games.

Always a fierce competitor, Schembechler was known to often go off on sideline tirades during games when his teams didn't perform up to his standards or when disputing an official's call on the field.

Schembechler has survived two heart attacks and two open-heart surgeries over the past 37 years. He had a pacemaker installed last year and also suffers from arthritis, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Earlier this year he was a keynote speaker at a Men's Heart Health Program in Dearborn.

At that time Schembechler told a Heritage Newspapers reporter: "I'm still alive. I'm doing all the things I want to do. I don't want to dwell on the problems I've had."

Schembechler was Michigan's athletic director from 1988-1990 and president of the Detroit Tigers from 1990-92 when the team was owned by Tom Monaghan.

Man, I totally forgot that he used to "work" for the Tigers.
