Detroit Pistons, National City & myTV20 to "Beat" Breast Cancer
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The Detroit Pistons have partnered with National City and My TV20 Detroit to introduce a new initiative with the goal of “beating” breast cancer.
This season, Detroit Pistons fans can purchase a Pistons MP3 player for only $25. The $25 is a donation and will go directly to the Detroit Medical Center for Breast Cancer Prevention. The MP3 players come with a pair of headphones and a lanyard. No computer software is required for the MP3 players, which can hold hours of music. The players will be available on the concourse at the final three Pistons preseason home games in the month of October, Breast Health Awareness Month, as well as November and December regular season home games. They’re also available online at Pistons.com and all Palace Locker Room Store locations until supplies last.
“With October being Breast Health Awareness Month, we wanted to use the Pistons preseason to raise awareness for breast cancer prevention at several DMC area hospitals,” said Tom Wilson, president and CEO of Palace Sports & Entertainment. “MP3 players are hot items these days and when we had the opportunity to offer such a cutting-edge product at an amazingly low price, and donate the proceeds to the breast cancer prevention cause, it was just a natural fit. We feel we have a great product, great partners and great fans who will participate and help us reach our goals.”
Ted Parker, president and CEO, National City, Michigan agreed by adding, “Many National City employees and customers and local community members have been affected by breast cancer, making our relationship with the Pistons to combat this devastating disease even more exciting. By supporting programs and efforts to generate awareness, support prevention and fund research, National City hopes to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. We believe that our contributions, and those of the community, will help bring us all one step closer to eradicating breast cancer.”
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in this country. Each year more than 211,000 American women and about 1,700 men learn they have this disease.
The MP3 players come loaded with a track that features Detroit Pistons guard Lindsey Hunter and his wife Ivy, and outlines action steps that can be taken towards the early detection of breast cancer. Lindsey Hunter also participated with TV20’s President/General Manger, Sarah Norat-Phillips, in a public service announcement that will air on My TV20 as part of this initiative.
