View Full Version : The BCS is still crap
Jethro34 10-15-2006, 08:43 PM Ok, so the BCS rankings are out for the first time this season and they suck once again.
This isn't just about the fact that Michigan is #3 and not #2. It's about a flawed system. I just want to know why the computer averages are almost unanimously splooging all over USC. Has this team showed anything to warrant the #1 ranking? No. And yet the computer average gives it to them OVER Ohio State.
It doesn't really matter for Michigan, because if they run the table - including the all important victory over Ohio State - there is no way in hell they can be denied a spot in the championship game.
But this isn't a Michigan thread, it's a BCS thread, and I want to hear the outrage over the system. They tried to make it better and, in my opinion, they have actually made it worse. Where is the strength of schedule and quality victory stuff? That absolutely has to be there if they continue to use a shitty poll to determine a winner.
I'll never rest until we have a playoff. This system is strictly whack.
Jethro34 10-15-2006, 10:39 PM By the way, anyone like the fact that the 3 consecutive potentially difficult games USC has (Oregon, Cal, Notre Dame) are all at home?
I guess if they make it through that stretch, home or not, they'll be worthy of their high ranking.
Personally I kinda doubt they will get through that stretch and I tend to agree with Mood that the Championship game might just be Big Ten champ vs Big East champ. I think that sucks, because in a playoff I'm sure Florida, USC, Texas, Notre Dame and a handful of other schools could knock off just about anyone in the Big East 9 times out of 10.

Simple -- the Sargin computer has the Pac10 as the most difficult conference in the nation, while the Big 10 is average at best (after Michigan and OSU, who?). Though I'm an SC homer, I'll have to say John David Booty, for all the time he's been waiting in Leinart's shadow, has yet to produce. Yes, he's no Leinart, but word is Mark Sanchez is a fucking monster. I really believe Carroll has gone to Booty simply because he's waited so long to get in there. If all things were equal, it would be Sanchez getting the starts.
What's scary about USC is what they might be like next year, with Chauncey Washington and CJ Gable and Emmanuel Moody all having a year of experience under their belts. Tailback U. is back, especially if Booty keeps stinking it up. IMO, the backfield next year for SC will be BETTER than Bush and White, and if Sanchez (a running QB) gets his shot.... well, this is Cal's year -- take it while it's there to have, becuase Cal will have NO shot next year.
But this year, I believe (at this moment) Cal and Auburn are the two best teams in the country, followed by OSU and Michigan. USC is sixth, just behind West Virginia.
JickBoy34 10-16-2006, 06:42 AM LOL
Black Dynamite 10-16-2006, 09:57 AM denny what tennessee and arkansas then since cal and auburn are the greatest?
auburn's offense has been poopoo. cal doesnt look as strong when slow down their offense and go at their defense like tennessee did.
DennyMcLain 10-16-2006, 12:06 PM And Michigan should have demolished PSU, but they didn't.
I'm saying who's playing the best right now, which IMO would be Cal and Auburn. One can also make a case for Arkansas, who got their little piggybacks handed to them by SC in week one, but then beat LSU AND Auburn.
In fact, you're right. I was wrong -- it's Cal and ARKANSAS.
Its not a Power Ranking. That said, the PSU game was not all that impressive (aside from hurting their 1st string and 2nd string quarterbacks)..
Glenn 10-16-2006, 12:29 PM Beaver Stadium is a horribly difficult place to win, especially when the team is somewhat good. I've been there and it's nuts (saw the UM/PSU game there a few years ago when Tom Brady led a unbelievable comeback).
Any win there is a good win.
(I said "Beaver" he he)

technically arkansas is undefeated since mustain became starting qb. but cal is not a top 5 team IMO. tenn. their defense is not that great when the offense isnt putting up a stack of points. they gotta beat usc to prove they deserve any respect yet. Michigan has just as good a defense as auburn and a better offense. no contest IMO. you forget that auburn didnt even score an offensive td in that florida win. Henne>>>>Leak, Hart>>>>florida's whole RB core. they would be screwed trying that against michigan. Auburn is not that good outside of their defense. You gotta have atleast a little offense..LOL
Ohio state is the best team in the country and UM is behind them. USC is eventually going down I think and probally to cal. but beating usc isnt anything special this year and i think notre dame will beat them. i think its osu, UM, texas, tenn., then cal(you can't put cal ahead of the team that beat them:wink: ), then usc, and so on.
DennyMcLain 10-16-2006, 02:05 PM you can't put cal ahead of the team that beat them:wink:
Don't tell me what to do, you FASCIST!!!!
But you're probably right.

OK, Penn State won the Big Ten last year and won the Orange Bowl. I know they lost a few key players, but they have a ton of talent on that team, it was at PSU for an 8:00 PM start, and we didn't have Manningham. It was 17-3 before that whack ass screen pass that we let up on, and it should have been 17-0 if not for Morgan Trent's "pass interference" on an uncatchable ball. To me, that was a quality win and then some. PSU has now lost 3 games, at Notre Dame, at Ohio State, and home vs. Michigan. Not bad teams at all. PSU is a good team.

Easy now. Bush could possibly be the most talented player ever to play college football and won a Heisman trophy. LenDale was a beast and had over 20 TD's last year and was a 1st round pick. That's a pretty bold statement Denny.

Yep. Washington is a monster, almost as big as LenDale but faster, and Gable has moves. But I think Moody will be the class of the group... eventually. The problem with SC is their young, inexperienced offense not allowing the aggressive D an opportunity to rest. What we saw at the end of the ASU game was Chauncey Washington taking the game over with a pounding ground attack. Sorry, JD Booty, but I smell Carroll thinking Taiback U the remainder of the season, getting his talent as many touches as possible to spell the D long enough to go after those lines of Oregon, Cal, and ND.
SC will probably lose to Longshore and Cal, and perhaps even to ND, but if Booty can't force Kiffin and Sarkissian to dump Student Body Left, I wouldn't be surprised to see Sanchez start next year. You guys just don't GET how much talent SC has stuffed away for the long haul. Like I stated, I think Booty is starting as a courtesy for his loyalty to the program. With Jarrett and Smith not at 100%, a backfield of Freshmen (not Washington, but this is his first year of playing, so he may as well be a Freshman), and a QB finally getting his chance -- by following up one of the greatest college QB's evah, not to mention the enormous target on SC's back, I think Carroll's done a great job.
But, getting back to the BCS. Yes, it's crap. WVU is a good team... a "good" team. Agreed that any of the top teams in the Pac, the Big10, or the SEC could crush the Mountaineers on most Saturdays. What I'd like to see is a new barometer based exclusively on non-conference opponents. This would force programs to abandon the cupcake KState routines and load up on quality opponents.
It would also limit the damage caused by what we're seeing in the cannabalistic SEC. In this mesurement, the loss by Cal to Tennessee is heavily weighted against the BCS numbers -- so much so that it would be IMPOSSIBLE for Cal to leapfrog Tennessee in the rankings if both only have one loss. Conversely, if USC gets one loss, it would be impossible for it to drop lower than Arkansas. Some might say such a rule might be unfair, but can you imagine the FSU/Miami game earlier this season? If both have one loss, then FSU could effectively "pin down" Miami from ascending past FSU, regardless of conference strength.
