View Full Version : Who will replace Lloyd? (old thread)

Ok, don't misunderstand this thread. Let me state my case here.

#1 - since there is a JLS thread, there MUST be a Carr thread, right?

#2 - Carr is being stalked and threatened, and was one of the top "Hot Seat" coaches coming into the season.

(I'm, going to wait a minute and reveal the true motivation for the thread in a bit)

Lloyd has answered his critics in a big way and his job should be every bit as secure as Martin has always said it was. He has done a hell of a job and, with the exception of some classic Carr-isms such as overly conservative play at times, has made every critic just plain look bad.

So, why else would I post this?

Well, I don't think he's going anywhere anytime soon. But, my biggest fear is that the right guy for the job might get away. This season has made two key assistants look VERY good. Both were tied to potential NFL jobs last season, and both can only continue to get calls the longer Michigan is successful.

So the question is, will Michigan make the right move to replace Carr before English and/or Loeffler leave? Ideally for me, I see a day within 5 years or so when English is the head coach and Loeffler is the OC. But I fear English could be gone to the NFL before that would ever happen. I also wonder if the old, wrinkly balls Michigan Alum would allow for a black head coach. I certainly hope that wouldn't be an issue, but most of us recognize that there are still stupid people with power an money that have ignorant views.

So, #3 is that his ideal replacements are hot commodities and need to get their love from Michigan before they get too much of it elsewhere.

Your thoughts?

It WILL be English. If Michigan lets him get away, then they're in trouble. I think Lloyd only has one, maybe two years left. And by that time, English will be ready for the Head Coaching spot.

I think your point is valid, but the only thing is a lot of people in the history of sports have been told they are next in line to coach after said coach leaves/retires. So I doubt any assistant is going to skip a job now to take one later especially the Michigan gig. Don't get me wrong but if Llyod thought he had it bad (following Bo who never won a National championship, {I know Mo came after but humor me)} imagine what the next coach will have to do following possibly 2 national titles in Lloyd's tenure. I am not sure a virtual no name in the football world could handle running a top 3-5 program.

Ron English or Les Miles (I know, his name keeps poping up though)

im not sure lloyd has proven his critics wrong, i think he's actually proven them right. seemingly all his major flaws everyone complained about have been corrected, and now michigan looks phenomenal.

i wont venture to guess on his replacement. english looks good, so far, and i think a black coach would actually boost recruiting, though i can see your point about hesitent michigan alumni. not sure if its valid or not, but certainly it a reasonable fear.

Here is why they are an elite program for anyone who disagrees.

Michigan is always in the top 10 in recruiting or close to it. Plus the recruits they get are from all over not just their regional pipeline.

Michigan is usually ranked fairly high at least at the begining of the year even when the team is deemed not that talented they get respect in the media.

Most years they are National title contenders or at very least in the Mix for being Big Ten champs.

They never have two really down years in a row.

Michigan having a bad year is generally two or three loses, where most programs view that as sucess.

Since 1986 they have never had a losing season, they have won 12 games once, 11 once, 10 six times, 9 five times, 8 five times and 7 once which was last year. Even the best programs of the last 20 years like OK, Miami, Texas, Nebraska, FSU, Florida, USC , ND, OSU, Auburn and Tennessee had 1 or more losing seasons.

With that said they are a bad road team most years, especially against west coast teams. Also Michigan has trouble in the big games especially in bowl games so I see why they can be considered less than elite. However I think a lot of elite programs suffer from that. I mean in the 90's Nebraska and FSU were the top teams but it's not like they won every national championship, they often lost in bowl games but never lost the title of being an elite program. Also I think if you put a great coach at the helm for Michigan like a Joe Pa, Pete Caroll, Urban Meyer etc..., Michigan would be in the National Championship game more consistently.

Mind you I am not a Michigan fan, I am a State fan so maybe I am seeing Michigan's sucess and projecting against the struggles of MSU year.

Big elite programs crack me up (this goes for any pro or college team). Not winning the title every year isn't a big deal, and how Carr could be on the hot seat after 'oh no only 7 wins' did, and still amazes me. Michigan is a solid program, no off-field issues, and really Carr's biggest issue if I remember correctly is not beating Ohio State. I do remember about 3 years ago Michigan couldn't seem to figure out how to punt. They were using all sorts of crazy formations and just getting blown up trying to punt. Other than that, what's the big deal? For all the reasons listed as elite qualifications for the UM program, Carr should be secure in his job. Yall should be happy that UM is good every year and produces a lot of NFL talent.

Miles has no chance of being the HC at UM. He has burned his bridges with the program.

RE might end up at ASU after this season. He is a WC guy.

Right now the 3 leading candidates as of today is Frentz, RE and Harabuagh. This is strictly rumor from the scout premium from a guy who thinks he has a source, but he is not a confirmed as being reliable whatsoever.

The thought of Harbaugh scares me. Has he been doing ANYTHING to warrant his name being there? I mean, a guy can coach a pee wee team but that doesn't qualify him to take over for an elite program.

And by the way, to answer my own question, this is from the University of San Diego website:

Jim Harbaugh begins his third year as the University of San Diego head football coach and quarterbacks coach. Last year he guided the Toreros to a program-best 11-1 overall record, the PFL North Division title, the outright PFL Championship, and to the No. 1 ranking for all I-AA Mid-Major programs. The Toreros received the Sports Network Cup for being the No. 1 ranked team in the final poll. Additionally, Harbaugh was the PFL North Division Coach of the Year and a nominee for the I-AA Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year. Under his direction the Toreros enter the 2006 campaign having won 16 of their last 17 games.

In 2004, his first year, he directed the Toreros to an overall mark of 7-4, including 5 straight wins to end the season. USD finished 3-1 in the Pioneer Football League North Division, good for a 2nd place finish. Five of his players were recognized as All-America; twelve were recognized as All-PFL; eight players were selected to the PFL All-Academic Team; and quarterback Todd Mortensen, the PFL co-Offensive Player of the Year, signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Lions.

Just to add to Harbaugh's resume, his team is 7-0 so far this year and has won every game by at least 26 points.
They are ranked #1 in the 1-AA polls and just beat #2 (at the time) Drake 37-0.

On top of that Jim's dad Jack is a legend here in Kentucky after being the coack at Western for a long time and winning a national title.

I personally think that Carr sticks around for 2 more years and it will come down to Debord and English, but dont dismiss Ferentz.

Also, I heard that there is going to be another move this off season in the staff. I wouldnt be surprised if Lefty moves on, which would suck because he is the man. There are differences in opinions on how to run the O. Lefty landed Mallett and Mallett is god in UM country at this moment.

Jethro34

It's hard to disagree with the way Debord runs the offense, seeing as how we have a 20 or so game winning streak with him as OC, but it would be horrible to let Leoffler go. If this team had 2 young coaches like him and English making most of the decisions it would be sick.

Moodini31

I would love to see English as the HC, Loeffler as the OC, and a new DC. Szabo maybe?

Artermis
10-29-2006, 02:38 PM
I want RE to have to have one more good year as DC, before I annoit him the next HC.

I hope to hell that Debord is not the next HC. Szabo is more of a lifer at LB position.

I always look young hunger guys (ala RE) to be coordinators. They always have something to prove it seems.

I never would have guessed that uM would be this lame, this chickenshit, this given over to Lloyd's legacy. Thank God I'm a lifelong Sparty, and graduate of MSU with four imaginary degrees, and I can spend the next five years laughing at Michigan and it's fans.

A little late, but still funny. Now, Lloyd just wants you to stay the hell away from his football team if you're a good coach.
